euphoria83··on Just Don't Hire 0x Engineers
That definitely was a good thing. Sometimes, an obvious thing doesn't become obvious unless it is pointed out. Yup, it makes total sense. Every company claims to hire and be filled with rockstars. That's statistically impossible. I guess, 90% of the companies are stating what they wish for, but know that ain't true.
euphoria83··on Just Don't Hire 0x Engineers
I couldn't understand the point of the article. No one will consciously pick a candidate they feel will perform badly.
euphoria83··on Santa Monica council votes 7-0 to crack down on Airbnb
Any new innovation has social impact and a part of the society, including the ruling bodies, react by trying to reverse the change. Any innovation will have some negative impact on the society because of lack of laws regulating the change. AirBnB is facing it, so is Tesla, and Uber. But, it is apparent, at least for the previously listed examples, that these are ideas whose time has come. I do not get worried by such decisions of ruling bodies. They are only temporary.
euphoria83··on The last male northern white rhino
Very poignant
euphoria83··on Be Kind
Not being kind also blinds you to other people's achievements.
euphoria83··on I Owe It All to Community College
I will give it an upvote, if for nothing else, than for the powerful writing. He makes a very lucid point though. Even hardcore capitalists could not argue with the idea that though the success of a man should depend on his efforts, bringing him to a state when he can start making an effort should be supported.

The airline industry is screwed up. Rising fuel prices, increased security measures after 9/11, inefficient governments, international rules to be taken care of, high basic cost of operation, etc.

It needs a revolution, from the likes of Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, etc.

Having said that, I feel like an airline can do a lot of make the travel experience easier for their passengers. Some airlines, such as Virgin, even try. But, in the absence of a plausible explanation, I would just go with lower standards of ethics. It is the same disease that plagued the financial system.

These airlines just need to understand this simple fact: if you delight your customers, they will come back and be willing to pay more for the same trip. You don't need alliances and frequent flier miles to buy the loyalty of your customers.

euphoria83··on Parable of the Stones
I have seen that video and it is a treasure of management advice. Other things: 1) When asked how he learnt to manage such a large company and aspects like finance, etc, he said (paraphrased): "as you do it, you just learn it". Makes starting and running a company sound more natural. 2) The other thing I remember he said: When sales guys get promoted to the level of CEO, they don't understand that their company runs because of a product and that is how they provide value to their customers, instead they just think of more sales channels, wider markets, etc. In doing so, they kill the entire process that created the company's product in the first place.
euphoria83··on You are not Steve Jobs
I appreciate your comment.
euphoria83··on You are not Steve Jobs
Cutting line to get food when you are the CEO and have a lot of stuff to get done is not too bad. Impolite, but not too bad. Think about all the perks that CEOs have.

Good managements have weak links. You can either gather the courage to get your message to people who have the strength to listen to you and act on it, or you can keep cursing your boss and stick to you job.

If the author would have gathered the courage to get her message (discretely) to a higher-up, she would have been not been remembering that mess-up. She might have either prevented it, or been fired.

euphoria83··on Seeking Inspiration?
I agree. I sometimes (rarely) have moments when I want to punch into the air, or raise my hands above my head to claim victory, or slap my desk with vigor, when I just achieved something (generally small) on the task I am intently working at. Then I look around somewhat abashed, but I can't share it with too many people because it will be hard to explain my accomplishment to them. That is true joy. I think that's what the article is talking about.
euphoria83··on Keeping People
Give him a fair share of your mind, wait. Then give his superior a fair share of your mind, wait. If things don't change, quit.

PS: Don't threaten in any way though, that will make you sound like a loser.

euphoria83··on Two Letters from Steve Jobs
I think SJ found it natural to just say "OK" because he thought that the person mailing him knew him enough and was mature enough to just need that permission.
euphoria83··on The man behind Google Docs is now trying to reinvent the web app at Box
The guy was the co-founder of writely. What more does he have to do to be the man behind his company. Surely, we can allow professional writing to be hyperbolic and still know what the author means, instead of taking everything literally.
euphoria83··on The man behind Google Docs is now trying to reinvent the web app at Box
Box has a sync desktop client that integrates with Finder and Explorer.
euphoria83··on The man behind Google Docs is now trying to reinvent the web app at Box
Box is mainly focused on enterprises (rather than private users) that needed much more fine grained access control such uploader only, previewer only, etc.

euphoria83··on The Cab Ride I'll Never Forget
You made me cry.
euphoria83··on I hereby resign
So, is the resignation due to fear of litigation or because of the moral quandary ? Clearly, the author was okay with looking at the FB profiles of the candidates and would have probably continued to do so, had he not been threatened twice on the same day. I wonder why he could not refuse to indulge the HR, especially since he held a pretty important position in the company.
euphoria83··on Home Servers – The future of the networked world
The homeserver can always be backed-up on an hourly basis as a fail safe. In case the home connection goes down, the backup server (maintained as a paid service by a company) can be used for a short while. I don't think traffic to the homeserver of any one family can be that huge. Torrent upload would typically have higher datarate than a regular house's upstream.
euphoria83··on Home Servers – The future of the networked world
I want to work on this idea to make it into a company. I am kinda soliciting ideas from people to learn more. I think the this product will be useful precisely when all the issues you mentioned will be streamlined. A simple web based UI to the homeserver can allow for installing apps, removing them, setting up passwords, uploading data and consuming data from within the house network.
euphoria83··on Home Servers – The future of the networked world
There are numerous applications that currently run on our laptops (e.g., dropbox application) that could potentially steal all your data. As we trust third party apps to behave themselves on our laptops, so can we trust the apps installed on the homeservers. With sandboxing now coming to desktop apps (e.g., thru Mac App Store), this problem will reduce even further.

Yeah, I too found the same issue. But overall a great implementation.
