eumenides1··on Is It Time to Kill the Penny?
Canada it is a "state"/provincial system. All provinces manage their own. Canada doesn't get inundated with Americans because if they do come, patients will be charged like private health care. If the patient's home province has universal health care, both province's will just work it out.

In general, we don't dump problems on to other provinces. It's bad form and federal courts will fix that quick especially with so much money on the line. If Florida state sends patients to a universal health care NY state for care, you can bet, NY State will be suing either residents of Florida for medical bills or Florida State directly.

eumenides1··on Is It Time to Kill the Penny?
In Canada, cash is all plastic. Not quite the plastic OP was thinking about. Love me my plastic colorful money.
eumenides1··on Frank Gehry started off building cities with his grandma
Are contemporary architects disliking his work a sort of counter culture sort of way (because he is everywhere)? What are fundamental complaints against his work?

Did Frank Gehry advance architecture in a way that people are standing on top of his work (figuratively speaking)?

eumenides1··on MS will ban Forza players who add the confederate flag to their digital cars
Not really. The rising sun flag is the flag of the imperial Japanese army, the one that allied with Nazi Germany. They were brutal and deserve to be regarded in a similar manner to Nazi Germany.

The Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force flag is problematic. It's like Mississippi or Georgia's state flags before 2020, it's a call back to things that should be left in the history books.

eumenides1··on Classic ThinkPad Thermal Paste Change
Does thermal paste expire? Yes and no.

The manufacture paste isn't supposed to expire and is designed for a long long life (5-10 years). That said, pump-out still happens.

Pump out is the result of thousands of thermal cycles of the heat source and the heat destination on the thermal interface material.

You might be able to fix your problem by replacing the thermal paste, but caveat is that "performance" thermal paste is MORE susceptible to pump-out and would need to be replace more frequently.

Manufactures choose "less performant" thermal pastes because they have longevity. You don't tell users to re-paste their CPUs on a year/bi-yearly basis.

DIY people choose the "performant" options because benchmarks happen only on the first day and non-performance means it's time to upgrade.

For you, replacing the thermal paste will improve the transfer of heat to the heat sink, but if your CPU/GPU generates more heat than the system can get rid of, it's MAX fan time. It's really a function of efficient your system is at generating and dissipating heat and what you are doing on the laptop.

eumenides1··on Dropbox has launched a new password manager in private beta
1. Some do already as noted by others. 2. The password managers domains/problem space is covers parts that a browser never covers. I.e. Phone Apps passwords, Bank PINs. 3. Sync: Phone, Computer, Tablet, other people's phones, other people's computer, other people's tablets.
eumenides1··on The radix 2^51 trick (2017)
This is really cool, but gives me PTSD from my compliers course.
eumenides1··on Pompeo tells Congress Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from China
My personal take for HK Citizens: Get out!

You are not going to win against CCP in this scenario. They have bigger army diplomacy AND they don't have rule of law.

Continue protesting, but figure away out, and Get out!

By staying, you are helping the CCP. You work, spend, and play in HK, you are giving the CCP money and power to continue doing this to you. By leaving, you take value out of the equation.

When people leave en masse. You can then form groups and communities elsewhere. Tell people of your plight, teach your kids the lessons you learned, and take on the CCP from a better position.

eumenides1··on Ventilator maker: we can ramp up production five-fold
Just like an alarm clock, some nations have hit snooze and others have woken up. It's pretty clear who is ready (Taiwan, HK, SK) and who is not.

Note: I think it's fair to say, SK is/was ready or has responded well, patient 31 notwithstanding.

I think the USA needs to work on the basics, but other nations will have so interesting advanced strategic decisions. i.e. Does ventilator design changes frequently? Does it make sense to have an on-demand factory or just build up a stockpile of ventilators that can be distributed as needed?

eumenides1··on Leaked Emails: Norwegian Pressures Sales Team to Lie About Coronavirus
That will teach you to sell your business to America/International conglomerates! /s

I wonder if a country can force a multinational to stop using a country name because of misrepresentation. i.e Norway (tourism?) forces Norwegian Cruises to stop using its name.

eumenides1··on Smart TVs like Samsung, LG and Roku are tracking everything
That sounds amazing, a free 5g connection with every tv!

cellular connection is still prohibitively expensive in many parts of the world.

eumenides1··on Don’t Blame the Internet for New Slang
Gretchen's book Because Internet, is fantastic. It was riveting and helped me get over a ton of personal grammatical hang-ups I have. The audiobook is amazing, go borrow it at your library!
eumenides1··on Young People Are Going to Save Us All from Office Life
What I like about young people is their unapologetic way of asking for things whether they deserve it or not.

Sometimes, it's cute. "I'd like a day off" out of no-where. Sometimes, it's ridiculous. "I'd like a day off to go day drinking with my buddies" Sometimes, it makes me re-think what and why we do things. This is how we move forward. Case in point, "I'd like a day off. I need a mental health day because someone tried to break into my house last night and I'm freaked out"

Mental health days a total luxury, but if you think about it, there are days we need off because we are going to unproductive regardless. It can be abused, but it can also be useful. Context and Manager discretion matters.

Young People aren't going to save us from the office, but they are going to challenge our assumptions and it's our duty to listen and change the office as needed.

eumenides1··on How China Unleashed Twitter Trolls to Discredit Hong Kong’s Protesters
Throwaway accounts get throwaway respect.

Why are you "acting" indignant? you created a throwaway for this exact purpose.

("Acting", because it's funny to think about robots acting)

eumenides1··on Why do poor school kids have to clean up rich commuters’ pollution?
MOVE THE SCHOOL.

Everything sucks, there is serious injustice, and no foresight to building the highway.

Portland still needs the highway and the school. So just use the highway's powers to make room for a school.

If you don't have foresight, then at least make things right.

eumenides1··on YouTube bans comments on all videos of children
Am i on crazy pills, but aren't YouTube comments trash in general?

Isn't it better to have the creator link to a discussion page with actual moderation and moderation tools?

eumenides1··on Canada's New Food Guide
Just because they tried and got it wrong doesn't mean we should be skeptical. We should be comparing what is known about food science to what is presented. Honestly, this food guide has been closest to what people currently consider healthy than any other previous guide.

The whole advice from grandma is nonsense. You probably have a wealthy background, but my grandma was poor, uneducated, and cooked meals based on what was affordable. That isn't advice, that's an economic condition.

eumenides1··on Shutdown Will Be Worse for Economy Than First Thought, White House Says
I actually think Government via hostage taking is fine. The Government won't be hurt in the end, it is a non-corporeal entity. The people who work for the government won't be fine.

What I think needs to happen is that the hostage takers have to be brought to justice or made to pay for utilizing such tactics. I think the hardest part is that the people have to remember this transgression at a personal level.

eumenides1··on Full Shutdown of L Train to Be Halted by Cuomo
You are dammed if you do, and you are damned if you don't.

It is a political time bomb no matter who is in charge regardless if the damage was done by an Act of God (Hurricane Sandy).

The L Train's shutdown was going to occur for 15 months. That's a long time. I don't doubt that it was necessary, but i'd be livid if i lost my main commute for 15 months.

On the flip side, if its going to take 15 months with a full shutdown, it's going to take forever with a partial/slow service.

What do people think about a slow of service, then going into a full stop of service with significant communication? People would be nudged to find alternates and spill over isn't going to overwhelm alternate routes.

eumenides1··on Ask HN: What are your “brain hacks” that help you manage everyday situations?
I bullet journal. (https://bulletjournal.com/pages/learn) I got my wife into it as well. Our journals are vastly different. She uses it to review and keep info. I use it as a task list and some notes.

It's a big motivator and important tool I've picked up.

The best part of the bullet journal method is the de-prioritizing of tasks. I don't give up on things to the point of detriment. With a bullet journal, I've learned to let go of stuff and move forward.

eumenides1··on The Google Cemetery – A list of dead Google products and why they died
March 2019. So it's in palliative care and has a DNR.

I like Inbox still. I was using gmail like i was using inbox before the product existed.

Oh well, when you live on the edge, sometimes you get cut. guitar riff

eumenides1··on I call my OCD ‘Olivia’
" I don't think OCD is a cause for concern unless it interferes with your daily functions"

When I ran into the formal definition of disease in University, that definition let me discard a whole load of thoughts and worries.

It's like that pipe of nirvana and heavenly thoughts that I was basking in and drinking up heavily? Well that's a sewer pipe now. Shut your mouth and let it pass.

eumenides1··on Impostor syndrome strikes men just as hard as women in technical interviews
Interviewing is a skill like any other. Everyone starts off a different points and everyone gets better with practice.

You maybe have good enough interviewing skills naturally and you get all the jobs you've aimed for. Perfect, great!

Most other people are just no good at it. For example: "Do you want this job?" "Maybe, i don't know..."

Practice may not make you perfect, but it's does go a long way.

eumenides1··on How hustle culture took over advertising
I love that the author is doing that.
eumenides1··on AT&T blacks out HBO, Cinemax for Dish, Sling TV users over carriage dispute
Re-reading and honestly. I just don't think your response to thread OP was clear in the way you have imagined it.

You mention walking vs flying as an appeal to extremes, but you dropped in trains right after. That takes away from your point at the critical moment. And your Facebook as a luxury comparison just doesn't really get your point across. It's not like you told me to sell my children to fix my financial troubles.

eumenides1··on AT&T blacks out HBO, Cinemax for Dish, Sling TV users over carriage dispute
I don't think you want to compare industries and determine the importance by the number of workers.

Facebook is trying to be a content platform for everything. If it had it's way, it would be YouTube++. To be locked out of YouTube these days would be pretty bad if you wanted to be a vlogger. And Air Travel is pretty critical for remote towns in America. Train isn't really competitive for cross america travel in terms of time even if we have to put up with all the security theater.

eumenides1··on The Ketchup Conundrum (2004)

French's is making headway in Canada due to Heinz closing it's facilities and laying off 700 workers.

eumenides1··on iPad Pro
Apple and failed proprietary connectors, name a more iconic duo.
eumenides1··on Mercedes Readies First Tesla Rival in $12B Attack
People are talking about the big manufacturers making competitors to the Model S/X/3, but who is a making the core component (i.e the battery)?

Tesla is the only one doing both ATM. Tesla will happily make batteries for other big manufacturers and will succeed as long a electric car uptake is standardized.
