I really love Linux.

eulers_secret··on Systemd.timer, an Alternative to Cron
This is exactly what happens, just like the old XKCD: Now there are N+1 competing standards.

It's why I have to check /etc/profile, ~/.profile, /etc/profile.d/*, ~/.bashrc (or whatever shell), /etc/environment, ~/.env, and a few others I don't even remember to figure out why an $ENVVAR is set.

I have to look at two cron-like things to figure out what's scheduled when. systemd-timers has been around and in use for a long while.

HN is crazy bullish about some things and it can be easy to get hyped (I’m hyped for M1, but only use FOSS).

I came to this thread looking for exactly what you posted. Sure, I could check the site but I expect limitations to be discussed as well.

eulers_secret··on Automation enables founders to grow companies with fewer and fewer employees
Exactly! These tools are force multipliers. 1 dev can do the work of 3.

If this is the case, a business should absolutely lay off 2/3 of their eng staff. If they don’t, their competitors will and then will eat their lunch!

No more lazy devs, they should be at their desks working all 8 required hours as they agreed to in their contract. If they’re not: you have too many staff.

eulers_secret··on Automation enables founders to grow companies with fewer and fewer employees
The only sensible move is to payback investors and yourself first. So, as little as they will accept. If you can afford to (maybe) loose them, give them $0 extra.

Economy isn’t so hot anymore, folks with obligations will absolutely settle and take it on the chin. You have all the power here.

eulers_secret··on Show HN: Chrome extension to summarize blogs and articles using ChatGPT
Looking over this, I cannot help but ask: “how much of this codebase could be generated by ChatGPT”?
eulers_secret··on Puter
A month has 160 work-hours in it, that could be upped to 280 if you’re insane and do 10 hours/day even on weekends.

That’s a lot of time! I think I could clone this in that time. And I’m a Linux kernel programmer with little web experience.

With modern tooling and documentation this kind of project is within reach for many.

eulers_secret··on 'Nobody Wants to Work Anymore' Meme Cites Real Newspaper Articles
I have recently given up the notion of ever owning a house: it’s far too expensive.

Even with rent increases, I can live in 500 sqft apartments and basically retire in my 30s/40s.

If I buy a house I’ll work until I’m 70. And I’ll be house poor that whole time.

The price of single-family detached homes is so out of line that it is absurd.

eulers_secret··on I/O is no longer the bottleneck
Depends. The cpu attempts to hold the maximum possible speed on any cores that are in use.

On my water cooled and specifically tweaked desktop- yes. It’ll hold max boost indefinitely, even with all threads. (getting to about 80c after 10 mins). Single-thread max is faster, and it’ll hold that as well.

My laptop will pull power within 15 seconds and be down to base clocks in a couple mins. Unless I set it down outside and it’s very cold.

eulers_secret··on Mercedes-Benz to introduce acceleration subscription fee
One should always come to the dealer with their own financing already approved- because it’s a starting point for negotiation. It’s very common for dealers to find a better APR than you can get independently. It’s also common to bundle discounts/perks with dealer financing. Customer has to do the math to figure out if the deal is good for them.

Dealer GPS tracking and interlocking is usually reserved for “credit criminals” and folks with previous repos.

eulers_secret··on Numbers that explain Intel’s decline
I quit Intel after working there for a decade. The open source work they did (still do in some cases) was great and I loved it.

I couldn’t stand supporting products that would come out “whenever” and would be marginally improved or not at all. 14nm++++++ was a joke. Our customers hated us so much. It was obvious in calls.

I got the feeling that Pat G cares, but I think fixing Intel is like changing the orbit of a planet.

That said, all my managers were awesome and the people were great. Sadly, having so much experience at Intel is almost a red flag on my resume.

eulers_secret··on Microsoft is turning Windows 11's Start Menu into an ad delivery system
I’m with you.

Sure there are compromises I have to make, but being Free, unmonitored, not treated like a resource to be extracted, and feeling like my computer is mine is worth more than the any of the issues I encounter.

eulers_secret··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
I did Linux kernel work for a decade at my old company. Left due to low pay.

Also worried about my employability. Not much call for C programmers in 2022. You’ll always fear losing your job.

I love low level though, I do embedded projects for fun! I can probably sling back-end Python for 1.5x the salary. I wish embedded payed better, but it doesn’t and therefore I won’t help alleviate this “shortage”.

eulers_secret··on Richard Stallman Announces GNU C Language Reference Manual
I guess the anecdotes about interviewees not being able to figure out a (very) simple Git repo without hand holding (or write 'fizzbuzz') are true.
eulers_secret··on Ask HN: What is the job market like for niche languages (Nim, Crystal)?
As the other poster said, it's due to other countries confounding the data. Check this for example: https://survey.stackoverflow.co/2022/#section-salary-salary-...

You can specify the location - the salaries are more inline with what you'd expect if you select the USA. Also note that 8,540 of 37,546 respondents are from the US - so MOST of this data is not relevant to the USA.

eulers_secret··on Volkswagen enters battery business with $20B investment
As an apartment dweller, I would want a regular hybrid.

So would the folks I know who only have street parking.

For many of us, electric or plugin just strait-up aren't an option. We get forgotten about all the time, but lots of us exist!

eulers_secret··on Unity employees ‘mad and stressed out’ amidst unexpected layoffs
It is well-known that if you're in the USA you can lose your job at any time, for no reason at all. At-will and all.

People need to plan for that happening, and not just assume it can't happen to them. This example employee should have thought "Hmmm, I should wait some years and save a good amount extra just in case".

I wish it weren't this way, but this is the reality of the world. Yes, it means moving slower and buying a house later (and for more money) - or never at all, but it isn't going to change and our hands are tied.

eulers_secret··on Give up GitHub: The time has come
IMO it kinda speaks loudly that Gitea's development happens on github!

There's a reason that's the case, and it's likely one of the reasons I should just use github as well; despite being morally opposed to what they're doing WRT copilot.

eulers_secret··on You vs. A Billionaire: compare your income
Since I'm unemployed, I just put in '0' (not quite true, I own some dividend stocks lol); every comparison was just infinity (∞).

Also the scrolling is a bit broken on Firefox on Linux.

eulers_secret··on FIDO Alliance
I've had so many of my non-tech relatives get hacked. Folks who don't live/breath/shit tech just kind of suck at p/w management. This is a huge improvement for them.

BUT, I absolutely think we should continue to demand the right to interact with services on our own terms: Even accepting the compromise of "less security" (debatable if you know what you're doing).

I think the only way forward is a Free/Libre implementation of FIDO2 that is NOT linked to any specific device and can be modified - along with direct access to the keys. Those are the users property and should not be held hostage by hostile designs. Users should have the right to move their keys, without justification, and use whatever manager they want. Even a fully-software one.

eulers_secret··on I disabled WiFi on the new Samsung fridge
Consider checking out https://esphome.io/

I personally buy whatever esp32 is on Amazon and use whatever usb power bricks I have laying around.

eulers_secret··on I disabled WiFi on the new Samsung fridge
If there’s an option to disable this “feature”, then it’s probably not advertising.

Good thing Apple Maps doesn’t subtly repeat biz names to me until I remember them. If this ever happens, I’ll move back to paper maps.

I don’t care if I have to pull over, it beats this mental manipulation and my mind being an advertisers plaything.

eulers_secret··on Ask HN: Do you use the bash alias feature much?
I don't, because I SSH into a lot of machines - many are systems I don't own so can't really change things on. Or they'll be re-imaged in a day anyways.

I almost always prefer to use what's available by default, that way what I memorize works anywhere.

eulers_secret··on Food security and the coming storm
Just saw this earlier today: https://www.insider.com/tiktok-doctors-say-diy-formula-recip...

Basically there are viral recipes going around, and this supports that formula in particular is something that we cannot trust the average person to diy. Infants are extremely vulnerable and have unusual dietary requirements.

People will die due to this.

EDIT: I see this is contentious. Check the reddit post and go argue with them: https://old.reddit.com/r/nottheonion/comments/v07nh0/tiktok_...

eulers_secret··on Ask HN: Any other self taught devs terrified of interviewing these days?
Hey, I just quit my job to go interview elsewhere! My job was too intense to study while working and I was a bit burnt out.

Deciding to leave was really hard, but then I realized that grinding leetcode and interviewing would be more fun and interesting than my current job.

Now I’m realizing I really suck at these problems. I think I’m going to start a blog chronicling my struggle and triumph. I hope to help others who are just starting the grind, it’s a bit discouraging at first. I have 10 YOE, but am a n00b here. It’s pretty fun and reminds me of old times.

eulers_secret··on Ask HN: How do you deal with rude interviewers?
If they were rude enough, I'd be tempted to leave a bad Google/Yelp review.
eulers_secret··on Apple, Google, and Microsoft commit to expanded support for FIDO standard
Not necessarily PM (yet), but I have added my e-mail and github to my profile here on HN.

To make it easy, my e-mail is eulers.secret at google's very popular email service, for now.

eulers_secret··on Apple, Google, and Microsoft commit to expanded support for FIDO standard
Is anyone working on a FOSS software solution for a FIDO2 authenticator? I know of Authy (which isn’t FIDO2, iirc) and some other projects, but none implement the passwordless login.

I have some time and the interest. I know attestation is an (optional?) part of FIDO2, and an OSS app will probably never be “verified”. Still, having a pure-software option/reference would be a boon.

Since this is extremely important for the future of the free web, I’m absolutely willing to help any project with these goals.

eulers_secret··on Your phone may soon replace many of your passwords
I hope there’s a FOSS way to manage my FIDO2 login tokens.

As long as there’s a command-line app that I can use instead of my phone (which I will never do), I’m good with this!

I’d be willing to help develop such an app.

eulers_secret··on GitHub will require 2FA by the end of 2023
If you're as crazy as I am, it looks like oauthtool+gnupg2 can do TOTP via the command-line on Linux as well. I think it's just another function that my homeserver will take over (or maybe a container). At least I can easily integrate this new info into my backup system, unlike apps on my phone...
eulers_secret··on Apple, Google and Microsoft Commit to Expanded Support for FIDO Standard
Thanks, I’ll check it out!

Looks like it answers some of my concerns. Super cool!
