eugeniub··on Why do Americans share so much fake news? One big reason is they aren’t paying
Lmao awful HN headline
eugeniub··on Advertisements have emerged on Substack's 'ad-free' newsletter platform
Ironically I can’t view this article without disabling my iOS adblocker.
eugeniub··on Bootstrap 5 Beta 1
Maybe I'm being picky but I'm a bit bummed not to see some sort of dark mode support here, especially after Tailwind released fantastic dark mode functionality last month.
eugeniub··on Is Apple Silicon Ready?
To be fair, I've been having serious trouble with Firefox. The public version (Rosetta 2) has been freezing up on me every third page load, and the nightly version (ARM compiled) has similar issues. But I'm optimistic that these issues will be resolved soon.

eugeniub··on Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers
Touch ID has been on the MacBook Air since 2018.
eugeniub··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
Maybe I'll have to eat my words in a few weeks but I can't say I'm super concerned. M1 seems a lot like the A14, which is a lot like the A13, which is a lot like the A12, etc...

I'm more concerned about how long it will take for most apps to have full support for both macOS Catalina and Apple Silicon. When the 2012 retina MacBooks came out, quite a few apps were awkwardly pixelated for a long, long time.

eugeniub··on Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers
If you go to the MacBook Pro 13" page (https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro-13/) and click on "See how M1 redefines speed" there are some more numbers for specific use cases (Xcode project build, Final Cut Pro ProRes transcode, etc). The footnotes for these numbers say the tests were done with the maxed-out previous-generation 2-port MacBook Pro:

> Testing conducted by Apple in October 2020 using preproduction 13-inch MacBook Pro systems with Apple M1 chip, as well as production 1.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7-based 13-inch MacBook Pro systems, all configured with 16GB RAM and 2TB SSD.

I think it's a fair comparison, since the new M1 MacBook Pro 13" is a 2-port model that replaces the existing 2-port models, while Apple still sells Intel 4-port models.

Similar situation on the MacBook Air page. The tests are done with the maxed-out previous-generation MacBook Air:

> Testing conducted by Apple in October 2020 using preproduction MacBook Air systems with Apple M1 chip and 8-core GPU, as well as production 1.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7-based MacBook Air systems, all configured with 16GB RAM and 2TB SSD.

eugeniub··on Pixel 5 review: Google spends its bill-of-materials budget unwisely
> default storage to 128gb

You mean only storage. Even the $400 iPhone SE has multiple storage options, maxing at 256gb for $550.

eugeniub··on Purism's AweSIM – monthly plan for Librem5 including unlimited data
Sorry guys, “privacy as a service” should not cost $1,200 per person per year. Hard pass.
eugeniub··on Google requiring Android apps on Play store to use its billing system next year
It's not at all obvious based on the title. Many people don't know about sideloading.
eugeniub··on The fresh smell of ransomed coffee
I promise you some bored teenager will do just that.
eugeniub··on Oculus Quest 2
I would be shocked if Nintendo released a competitive (I.e. not Labo) headset in the next year.
eugeniub··on ReMarkable 2.0 – A digital notebook that feels like paper
To me the main benefit of an e-Ink display is the ability to read it for hours without eye strain. Judging by the size of the Light Phone's screen, it seems that the only benefit there is battery life.
eugeniub··on ReMarkable 2.0 – A digital notebook that feels like paper
I'd say review units having been sent out is another positive.
eugeniub··on ReMarkable 2.0 – A digital notebook that feels like paper
I have the XIRON Paperfeel. Sketchy name, totally worth it.
eugeniub··on ReMarkable 2.0 – A digital notebook that feels like paper
I think that's unavoidable, even on ReMarkable. That's why they sell replacement tips: https://remarkable.com/store/marker-tips
eugeniub··on ReMarkable 2.0 – A digital notebook that feels like paper
There's a company called Yota that made YotaPhone, an Android phone with a normal screen on the front and an e-ink screen on the back. Very cool concept, but it was poorly executed. The last version was released in 2017, and the company went bankrupt in 2019.
eugeniub··on ReMarkable 2.0 – A digital notebook that feels like paper
This is true, but the paper-like screen protector market is a mess. I spent $40 on the official Paperlike 2, waited a month (preordered), applied it, and it was pretty bad. Not really like paper at all. Then I bought the knockoff-sounding "XIRON Paperfeel" for $15 and it was a vast improvement. Unfortunately they don't make one for the 12.9" iPad Pros with home button.
eugeniub··on Show HN: Muse – Tool for Thought on iPad
Honestly at that price point, I would not try it because I would fear liking it more than fear not liking it, because liking it means I have to fork over $100 every year to keep it. I'm not against subscription pricing, but this is my mentality, illogical as it may be.
eugeniub··on Show HN: Muse – Tool for Thought on iPad
My bad, I got some numbers mixed up. I updated my comment.
eugeniub··on Show HN: Muse – Tool for Thought on iPad
Sorry, $100/year just feels too high. It's about the same price as a Photoshop subscription.

Correction: Previously I got some numbers mixed up, and I said it's almost twice the price.

Because even if you don't know them they're still your neighbors.
eugeniub··on Facebook account now required to login to Oculus devices
Well this is horrifying. I bought a Quest for a relative. He loves it, but he doesn't have a Facebook account, and has no interest in signing up. I have a Facebook account, but I don't use it, and I certainly don't want to connect my Oculus account. I guess we'll both have to sell our Quests. That means we'll lose all of our game purchases.

I came to Oculus with eyes wide open knowing it was a Facebook company, but this news still sucks.

eugeniub··on Silicon MacBook could launch on 27 October and cost $800
Not sure if you're seeing the bigger picture here. SwiftUI is not necessary. You can build an iOS app entirely in UIKit and target the Mac via Catalyst. In addition to that, any iOS apps that don't target Catalyst will be runnable on an ARM Mac, unless the developer opts out.
eugeniub··on Self Host a Wiki or Knowledge Base for Your Team
I looked into self-hosted wikis for our team earlier this year. Outline looked very promising, but as the author here mentioned, the documentation was indeed lacking. It seemed to me that they're more intent on pushing their paid plans.

Ultimately we landed on BookStack (https://www.bookstackapp.com/) and people in our org love it. Deployment instructions were pretty easy to follow for someone who doesn't do many server deployments, the UI is great, and the feature set is sufficient for our needs. Plus, the lead developer is extremely helpful in answering questions on Discord.

The visual indicator is only in beta right now, but it will be coming to all iPhones 6s and newer in the fall.
