eugenekolo··on GNOME has no thumbnails in the file picker and my toilets are blocked
I really enjoyed the writing style.
eugenekolo··on Tinycore Linux
Its a nifty Linux that I used for my "fake NAS" running on an old thin client. The docs are fairly simple, and their package manager has mostly everything you need.

It's easy to set up a weekly cron job and samba server on it for some NTFS drives.

eugenekolo··on Ask HN: Good C++ code bases to read?
AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and Chromium (Open source Chrome) are good, because they have well defined C++ coding styles that prohibit a lot of unmaintainable/unreadable things.
eugenekolo··on Google discontinues the Pixel 4, nine months after release
What's the issue? What are you expecting for them to do? It's just a smart phone and they work fine.
eugenekolo··on Amazon Warehouse scam: 16TB HDD swapped for 8TB, returned for full refund
Welcome to Amazon shopping for the past 5 or so years. Everything is fakes, used goods marked as new, and low quality goods with 4.7+ stars from fake reviews.

The convenience is so nice, yet about 50% of the time I'm disappointed with any purchase made on Amazon.com. But, those stock profits :heart_eyes_emoji:.

eugenekolo··on Online classes are not worth cost of full tuition
There are countries that are better to work in than others though, e.g., Switzerland salaries are near US with significantly better benefits. US is in the top 10 though.
eugenekolo··on Online classes are not worth cost of full tuition
Depending on your field a masters degree in anything is seen equivalent to every other masters degree. And on the other side of the spectrum, they're not considered useful by many employers/jobs.

Or just push a fake message?
eugenekolo··on Craig Federighi confirms Apple Silicon Macs will not support booting other OS
I think 95% of people running an alternate OS on a Mac computer are doing it for dual booting Windows and video games.
eugenekolo··on Google Blew a Ten-Year Lead
I'm sure these alternatives work for some, but I really don't find "Hey" a suitable alternatives to Gmail, nor "Notion" to Google Docs.

I think the innovation and updating in those Google products has stagnated a lot, but they're still better for actual work and business than the new hip things.

eugenekolo··on macOS 11: copies of dynamic libraries are no longer present on the file system
If I understand correctly, this is just the same behavior as iOS's "dyld_shared_cache" which is basically all the system shared libraries stuffed into a single file.

eugenekolo··on Saying thanks: testing a new Reactions feature
The problem with SO is that it tries to be two things. One is a reference/encyclopedia of questions, and answers. And the other is a welcoming place to ask for help. Those two don't seem to line up 100%.

It's clear the old school moderators seem to think of SO as a reference, but the company itself wants to view it as a place to seek help.

eugenekolo··on U.S. lawmakers propose $22.8B in aid to semiconductor industry
Governments all around the world push economic sectors with aid... This isn't anti free-trade, this is what governments do to boost economic activity.
eugenekolo··on Amazon sues former AWS marketing VP Brian Hall after he takes Google Cloud job
Standard operating procedure whenever big wigs move to competitors. Sue so they can't work for some amount of months/years, any information they know is now dated. Win either way no matter how the lawsuit goes.
eugenekolo··on Ask HN: What collaborative whiteboard are you using?
Google Slides and share desktop on Zoom. No need to complicate it with yet another piece of software.

Powerpoint and Slides are perfectly capable for drawing diagrams, or whiteboarding. Zoom screen share is low enough latency and you're already using it for voice comm.

eugenekolo··on MacOS Catalina: Slow by Design?
Another slight modification to make this show the effect every time:

    f=$(mktemp) && \
    echo $'#!/bin/sh\necho Hello' > $f && \
    chmod a+x $f && \
    time $f && \
    time $f && \
    echo 'echo Hello2' >> $f && \
    time $f

On my system:

    Hello

    real 0m0.131s
    user 0m0.001s
    sys 0m0.002s
    Hello

    real 0m0.004s
    user 0m0.001s
    sys 0m0.002s
    Hello
    Hello2

    real 0m0.004s
    user 0m0.001s
    sys 0m0.002s
eugenekolo··on Microsoft's GitHub account allegedly hacked, 500GB stolen
Awfully boring things to breach. Not very exciting except for the fact that some employee probably installed nudez.exe.
eugenekolo··on Principles for Building New SaaS Products on AWS
Not sure how much I can trust "AWS Gurus" about actually building SaaS products in a real world at a real company.

It's all good advice, but please provide me with the money, and resources necessary to do it all.

eugenekolo··on Ask HN: How do you share passwords simply and securely?
the answer changes depending on if you're talking about your Netflix Login or the login to the production work server
eugenekolo··on Beware of the GIF: Account Takeover Vulnerability in Microsoft Teams
Weird lead in about GIFs to simply saying they had a subdomain takeover.
eugenekolo··on How to play board games online with your friends
Another addition that I've found really fun is Lords of Waterdeep. The board game version of it is a chore to play due to setup and how massive the board is. The digital version is way more fun as the board game is set up already for you, and not as daunting.

Lords of Waterdeep is available on Steam + iOS + Android - it's the exact same game on it them all. Cross platform gameplay works which is really amazing. AI also exists and isn't half bad.

Your non-computer using friends/partners can play on their tablets/phones along side friends who have gaming PCs.

eugenekolo··on Remote Work Report
I'm pro remote work, but it's questionable as to why GitLab pushes their remote work ideas so much? Is it to become some sort of remote work consultant? Is it an angle of marketing?
eugenekolo··on A list of all the great engineers laid off. Help them land on their feet
There's a free form introduction page, as well as extracurriculars, as well as you can simply make a job called "Independent".
eugenekolo··on Swift: Google’s Bet on Differentiable Programming
Google loves entering legal battles over programming languages huh....

Just use something actually free, or create your own.

eugenekolo··on Tell HN: Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and now web cams
I paid $40+shipping for a Logitech C270 when it normally goes for something like $25. Such is life. Took me a while to find it (sparkfun.com if anybody's interested in getting one too).
eugenekolo··on Ask HN: What do you use to keep track of bookmarks/notes/snippets?
I tried things with bells and whistles such as tagging, and embedding content and honestly it ended up just distracting me / creating more work for me to do. I found myself fighting with stylization, yak shaving small things when all I wanted was to jot down a link or idea.

I've now reverted back to just a flat files that I attempt to use markdown in. My home directory has a folder named Notes, that contains these NOTES.md and such. Write it in whatever text editor you want, but I mostly use Sublime Text. Email myself bits and pieces to transfer the data between devices.

eugenekolo··on Using Zoom? Here are the privacy issues you need to be aware of
Anecdotally, that happened to me several times between London/US... Curious of an actual investigation into this.
eugenekolo··on New businesses are choosing cities with good public transportation: study
Correlation is not causation? A better guess would be that businesses are choosing places where the next generation of employees wants to live and work... happens to be cities on the coasts that also have public transit systems.
eugenekolo··on Ask HN: How to explain job gaps on the resume?
Why wouldn't it? The people who care about a resume gap is HR, and the people you work with are not those people. The daily people you work with don't care what your past is, it's only HR that has a negative opinion of job gaps on hire-ability.
eugenekolo··on My Second Year as a Solo Developer
How many years of work do you have in the tech industry? It seems in the current market (not even assuming SF salaries), and without kids/other dependents, it's fairly easy to reach that point. Just curious, because a lot of people have this mentality that they need to work forever and ever, but it often is just a mindset.

You can easily amass 500k-1M and just coast on 40k/year in expenses for a long time. If it's something you want... a lot of people want kids, or to live in high cost areas, or to accumulate wealth to pass on, or have dependents such as elderly parents, or enjoy money a lot.
