etherealG··on Google’s Plan to DRM the Web Goes Against Everything Google Once Stood For
What’s the alternative?
etherealG··on Eventual Business Consistency
Except for the exceptions. And off by one errors.
etherealG··on Learning needs to be effortful to be effective
Perhaps you’re still learning to enjoy life.
etherealG··on Fast machines, slow machines
Sorry to say, but it’s no different now than before in terms of skills and keeping up with “deep knowledge” to be successful in the way described above. Sure, things move quicker now… but pace of change was never the challenge for good vs. bad engineers. The good ones easily keep up now, and the bad ones still existed when pace of change was slower. In my experience it’s more about people’s willingness to invest in deep understanding. Bad engineers generally just don’t care to learn their stack deeply.
etherealG··on John Carmack on shorter work weeks (2016)
Some people enjoy multi tasking. For them, focus = boredom = frustration. That’s me. If you give me 7 hours per day on the same focused task, I’ll burn out just like you described for the opposite.

Please stop projecting your ideal work life onto other people.

Mental preferences are endlessly complex. It’s not ok to assume everyone has your preference and can work the same hours and way you do. It’s also not ok to project that towards some work / life balance that assumes things outside work are primary drivers in everyone’s lives.

Some people derive their main satisfaction in life from the fruit of their work. That’s ok too.

etherealG··on Software effort estimation is mostly fake research (2021)
You’re forgetting that in companies with the management properties you say are bad, those properties may cause actual value to be delivered faster, even if it’s at long term cost. That value can accrue, gain interest, and that company can be more successful than the one with the management properties you say are bad.

I think you’re conflating success of a company with the pleasure of its employees. These 2 factors are usually (not always) opposing not correlated.

Would you mind correcting your first comment please? It’s not a big deal but sometimes people stop reading deeper and they might continue to believe your mistake and misunderstand the history.
etherealG··on Same Stop: Life after 26 years as a programmer for Apple
I would suggest reading a book called Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance. It might help to align your feelings of addiction with your feelings of “spread” :)

Engineering is a wonderful tool but also a form of art. It’s ok to indulge your passion with some balance to the rest of life without calling it addiction.

Except in many dep management systems they purposefully don’t keep only one copy to allow multi versions to run side by side and other benefits like having a deliberate piece by piece upgrade of everything in the dependency tree. Forcing all deps to be on the same version of all other deps sounds like it would cause more problems than it would solve.

Also the ideas of immutable deps mean this property of “duplicated” deps comes naturally.

I think many bugs can come from what you propose. A large dev tree would need everyone in the tree to coordinate to upgrade all at once. That seems basically impossible for any dep tree. Especially in a system where the deps are small code snippets like this one. Even small programs can have 1000s of deps.

Why are you implying that this model is “normal” dep management?

etherealG··on Firefox may soon reject Cookie prompts automatically
I wish this were true. It’s not. Tracking can be seen as “legitimate interest” because the money earned from that is needed to run the service.

If we could turn tracking I to a banned way to earn money from free visitors, I think we’d all be better off. This is not how gdpr works today.

etherealG··on I worked at Google for -10 days
In France where I work an offer letter is binding to hire. After that if you are fired you are entitled to strong compensation if there is no proof you failed at your job. On top of that there is significant unemployment benefits to support you during looking for a new job for years.

This seems like a normal societies way to secure the transition between jobs. I’m thankful I don’t live in any of these crazy places that make changing jobs seem like a severe stress way beyond what it should be.

I think waiting can be used effectively for actions that are not common and you want the user to take a little time to consider the choice. I think it’s used badly more often that well, but it sometimes is used well. In games for example, a destructive action like refunding a point that’s earned and the refund costs earning time. Something you do sometimes, costs a little effort, but doesn’t warrant a confirmation button.

Not sure I understand, are you saying you use or don’t use a vpn? If you don’t, how do you “hide” your ip while torrenting?

Do you think our own brains when they “understand” are also “just” estimating probability well? If so perhaps we’re quite close to discovery of something important.
etherealG··on Just use a monorepo
For your 2nd drawback, I can recommend checking out git subtree. It allows 2 way split and merge of any subtree of a repo. You can easily open source part of your repo in a “fork” and keep it up to date with your mainline as well as incoming pull requests with very little effort.
etherealG··on Dear JetBrains, Don't mess with your UI
I know it’s just 1 user, but I’d like to validate your hypothesis… I did exactly that with this article, even after reading it.

etherealG··on Apple’s ad business set to boom on the back of its own anti-tracking crackdown
I think being the richest company in the world makes it pretty cleat that there’s no need to increase prices to support no ads. It’s pure greed and you can’t reason with it.
etherealG··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
you seem to think that vector vs. bitmap is a design concern. it isn't. designers care about their form and their function. a better tool means an easier path in the design process, it doesn't matter the tool, vector or bitmap.

Majority outsource to the big providers. Way better total cost of ownership, and corp accounts are safe from all the scanning bullshit because they’re paid for accounts. They’re actually the customer not the commodity like on the free versions.
etherealG··on We're improving search results when you use quotes
I have the exact opposite experience. Living in France for 8 years means basically assuming the usual french mass media rhetoric or the English one.
etherealG··on Vite – Next Generation Front End Tooling
All because frontend started with “html” + interactive toy “scripting” for fun animation. It’s like they all forgot about Turing completeness.

etherealG··on My students cheated... a lot
Sharing your work to others to copy isn’t facilitating, it’s committing. Cheating is cheating.

bothers me that it's fine print. why do we all have to resort to dark patterns, even among coders making tools for other coders :(
etherealG··on If Google sucks then why is everyone still using it?
What about discovery of sites you don’t know about. The whole purpose of he internet is that we’re all connected, but you seem to want only an extended private network.

And now the root cause makes sense, corruption of money over what these institutions are meant to be for. Money really does taint all around it.
