ethanpil··on Stripe Alternatives
For myself, and as referral for e-commerce and SAAS clients.
ethanpil··on Stripe Alternatives
Thanks but I find Quora responses for questions like this typically very spammy. I think the HN community has the right mindset and experience to provide more qualified recommendations.
ethanpil··on Snapcast – Synchronous multi-room audio player
Can you share what speakers and amps you're using?
ethanpil··on Show HN: Kareer Day – Learn About Jobs by People Who've Done Them
Nice idea. Good luck on seeing it grow out. Do you have a revenue model long term?

Right off the bat, I think you need a search box. Probably with autocomplete to the job titles. I was a bit frustrated trying to click through to the various titles, and I could not find the search box.

ethanpil··on Open-Source Home Automation
I'm curious how you setup "automatically unlock before we reach the door"
ethanpil··on Ask HN: Why Won't Adobe Release for Linux?
Even if they only release for one distro to start I'm sure they can find one that is popular enough. Especially with some financial incentive from the distro maker... It would probably make the distro instantly more popular...
ethanpil··on Ask HN: Why Won't Adobe Release for Linux?
In this case, the truth is that Adobe CC has been cracked on both Mac and Windows, so whatever they are doing is pretty useless. I'm sure they can bake in something that will work on Linus and also eventually get cracked as well.
ethanpil··on Ask HN: Why Won't Adobe Release for Linux?
I think much of this has been solved with systems like appimage and snap. While they are not super Linuxy or in the spirit of the community, people have come to understand why companies with a huge investment into proprietary IP like Adobe would only invest in Linux with something like these available to them.
ethanpil··on Ask HN: So you started as a software developer.. What are you now?
A high school teacher and still a software developer!
ethanpil··on The Amiga Documents – Play by Play of the Sad Demise of the Commodore Amiga
I just came across this site. Its a fascinating read, clearly a labor of love watching a loyal community, customer base and fan base betrayed repeatedly by false promises.
ethanpil··on Sears says it has secured a $250M lifeline, will close 96 stores
Only yesterday, I received a printed Amazon catalog in the mail. It's really funny to think about how things have come full circle.
ethanpil··on “Is your startup idea taken?” and why we love X for Y startups
I'm looking forward to seeing the first startup in the Uber for Beards space.
ethanpil··on Slave markets found on Instagram and other apps
This is crazy. From the article I found the hashtag.

Just Google "خادمات للتنازل" and you will find these ads on Twitter, Pintrest and lots of dedicated sites. :(

ethanpil··on Ask HN: Do you have personal bots?
What about your prize bot violated Twitter policy?
ethanpil··on Electron 7.0
Ohh, never heard of Ultralight. Will check it out, thanks! I agree that licensing makes these products an issue for some, but they both seem to offer a very flexible free use option...
ethanpil··on Electron 7.0
A lot of the bloat complaints about Electron are addressed well in Sciter (https://sciter.com/) although, Sciter has its own set of limitations. I have found Sciter a great option for many use cases. (I'm not affiliated with Sciter in any way).
ethanpil··on California power outage triggers chaos in science labs
It's barely a corporation. Just another monolithic utility with government mandated monopoly and no incentive to provide service or value.
ethanpil··on California power outage triggers chaos in science labs
California has the 5th highest rate per kWh[1]. (#2 excluding Alaske and Hawaii)

Just like our sales tax rates, income tax rates, our gas prices (due to taxes), sanitation costs, ad nauseum. We pay excruciatingly high rates for everything, and get mindbogglingly low returns for the money.

CA gov. and utilities are a textbook case in poor management and government out of control.

Where does the money go?

ethanpil··on macOS Catalina
This is exactly the mentality this entire thread is about! Here we see it clearly demonstrated in another product. Apple says "update, upgrade or you are dead to me."

I have been stuck multiple times with users upgrading Pages two versions later on a desktop and then unable to read on their laptop or vice versa. Inexcusable!

ethanpil··on Running Wine on macOS Catalina impossible due to removal of 32bit code execution
Nice gesture by codeweavers for paying customers "So here’s the deal. We’re good people. And if our product temporarily cannot work, we believe that you shouldn’t have to pay for it. Anyone with an active CrossOver macOS license as of September 10, 2019 will automatically get a free three month support extension until we can get CrossOver 19 working on Catalina. If we need to add more, we will add more. If we get CrossOver 19 up and running in two months, you still will get your three months of additional support."
ethanpil··on AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3000 32-core CPU is more bad news for Intel
I'm ignorant in stock trading, I admit. But I dont understand why AMD stock isn't blowing up. It's done a recovery after a market wide dip, but hasn't all this Intel beating news raised the hype? So many other tech companies are so severly overvalued and hyped daily. Why is AMD a steady 28-32?
ethanpil··on Pure Bash Bible
Would love to see this in a ZSH equivalency... Especially with the impending move to ZSH in MacOS.
ethanpil··on Building a Raspberry Pi 3B+ full keyboard handheld
This is really inspiring I have been dreaming of building my own little portable notebook, powered by PI4 and a hefty USB-C battery. With the beautiful, small HDMI LCD panels available today and a 3D printer, its within reach!

100% inspired by https://habr.com/en/post/437912/ which I first saw here on HN

ethanpil··on Swift on Raspberry Pi
Whoa cool. Where can I learn more about this setup?
ethanpil··on Turning a MacBook into a Touchscreen with $1 of Hardware (2018)
Curious what kind of CPU usage the OpenCV code requires on the backend...
ethanpil··on Google Legally Profits from Fraud on Its Platform
How about eBay and Amazon knowingly selling counterfeit goods to the tune of billions? Or Craigslist for sex workers?

I'm sure none of these companies started out with the intention of profiting from illegal or immoral activities, but once they notice that prophet bump, it becomes difficult for them to make changes, especially if no one really cares or complains too much...

ethanpil··on Ask HN: Where / how do you store your cryptocurrency wallets?
I'm interested to know how you assessed the safety and reliability of this option?
ethanpil··on YInMn Blue
How about the dangers of electronics repair?

ethanpil··on Ask HN: How to deal with difficult subordinates as a manager?
I understand where you are coming from, and certainly my goal is to exactly "to clear hurdles for individual contributors who are more technical than you." It happens to be that this case specifically is not about a technical / developer role.

Still, ultimately I am responsible for the team's output and the team's utility to the organization as a whole. Without that concept, then what exactly are we doing here?

ethanpil··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (June 2019)
Startups: Save tens of thousands of dollars per year by contracting out to an experienced team.
