etchalon··on 'You Can See Everything' Review: Nathan Fielder's Doc About Elizabeth Holmes
I mean, plenty of men have done the same thing. No imagination required.
etchalon··on GOP issues stark warning to AI companies
Weird how, in our representative republic, one of our major parties has decided a better strategy than listening to the public is to demand money and assistance from companies less those companies be forced to stop doing things the public would rather those companies not do.
etchalon··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
I wonder if it's less projection than permission.

They believe that all government is corrupt and thus they're not doing anything wrong by being openly corrupt.

etchalon··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
It's just hilarious the degree to which people see a thing happen sometimes and begin to believe, despite not just evidence but plenty of counterfactuals, that it's happening every time.
etchalon··on Nebula Sans
There are so very, very many things you're missing here.
etchalon··on Nebula Sans
"Why bother doing something original when there's something generic that's good enough" is certainly one way to approach things.
etchalon··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Macs have a smaller marketshare for Business than Windows machines, but iPhones are ubiquitous in enterprise.
etchalon··on Show HN: Screen memory without screenshots, just text to Markdown
I experimented with this exact same approach earlier this year.

It's barely sufficient, because, bluntly, most apps just aren't wired up right.

So you end up having to hand code a lot of specific profiles for specific apps to make this work well, and even then, you don't quite get the right level of detail to make it work out.

Will try this app, to see if it improved on my own approach, but man, the hope levels are low.

etchalon··on US debt has hit $40tn - Will that be a wake-up call?
I look forward to hearing how we have to let more children starve so Trump can build more ugly monuments and we can drop more bombs on school girls in foreign lands.
etchalon··on The Amazon tax
If you know the exact product you want, Amazon is great.

If you don't, it's absolutely horrible.

etchalon··on Meta faces 'astronomical' consequences as legal fight reaches critical moment
I think they've proven they deserve whatever consequences we can muster.
etchalon··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
It will never not be funny that whenever universal health coverage comes up, Americans will act as if it's some impossible task that wouldn't solve any problems when the rest of world seems to have sorted it out just fine.
etchalon··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
I was wondering one day why it seemed like so many YouTubers were Canadian.

The "well of course" moment took me a day longer than it should have.

etchalon··on The federal keyword lists that canceled billions in research funding
This is what right-wing Twitter brain gets you.
etchalon··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
The objection seems to be that Claude will always write worse prose than a human writer, even if the writing Claude generates is understandable.

Yeah, John. We're all OK with that.

etchalon··on Brazilian election filter in X For You timeline
Transparency for something that was well known, reported on and legally documented?
etchalon··on Jason Arday, ex-Cambridge professor at centre of plagiarism row, found dead
You seem to lack an understanding of the word "literal".
etchalon··on Jason Arday, ex-Cambridge professor at centre of plagiarism row, found dead
Yet, "DEI Person" is literally not. Strange that.
etchalon··on Jason Arday, ex-Cambridge professor at centre of plagiarism row, found dead
Please show me the literal "DEI Person" job title on that page.
etchalon··on Jason Arday, ex-Cambridge professor at centre of plagiarism row, found dead
I think a lot things are simultaneously true:

1. He exaggerated/lied about some of his accomplishments and aspects of his life. 2. The accomplishments and aspects of his life he exaggerated/lied about did not seem to be about his academic success. Generic life puffery that, while dishonest, did not make him unqualified for his position. 3. Anti-DEI crusaders decided to make an example of him. 4. Had he not been a person of color, the scrutiny would have had a very different shape.

etchalon··on Launch HN: Bullet (YC S26) – A Faster Coding Agent
Since I can't get this thing not to annotate its commits with itself as an author, I can't use it.

That should be an option, not forced.

etchalon··on Pixel Watch 5
It's less of a big deal than I thought it'd be.

I switched from a Garmin to an Apple Watch - which has less battery life - for some development work I had to do and it turned out I barely noticed.

Charge phone, charge watch, charge headphones just became a nightly checklist.

etchalon··on xAI, SpaceX, and the Race for AI Buildout
"It's only a crime because it's against the law." - someone, inevitably
etchalon··on AI financial advice is surprisingly good, especially if you ask right questions
I don't understand why this is shocking. LLMs are a weighted average of collective "wisdom", and decent financial advice isn't hard to come by.
etchalon··on Anti-fraud tools can't keep pace with robocall scammers
They don't to block scam calls. They can easily limit who gets access to make them, making the resource itself precious enough no one would risk wasting it on a dial scam.
etchalon··on Anti-fraud tools can't keep pace with robocall scammers
I genuinely don't understand why this is so hard to tackle.

Phone numbers are a scare resource and the telecommunications networks heavily regulated with numerous central points of control.

This bullshit is scaling because the companies which gate and sell that access have no obligations, legal or otherwise, to deny scammers access to their resources.

etchalon··on Apple's hostile App Store rating system
Human discovers other people have opinions on things that they don't believe should be allowed.
etchalon··on Texas wins court order to suspend domain name for violating age-verification law
Oh look, Ken Paxton is bragging about accomplishing nothing.
etchalon··on The End of Creativity
I don't understand that point of the story.

It's essentially, "We both used the same iMovie template because neither of us are creative."

etchalon··on The Three-Second Theft: Why AI Voice Fraud Outruns Every Defence
We're gonna need two-way passwords for conversations.

Fun.
