etaty··on Rolls-Royce calls off bets on electric planes, says low-carbon fuel is future
I believe dropping and catching new battery pack in the air is the way to go as well! Electric motors are smaller and can enable stationary flight. So stopping to change your pack is maybe a solution.

etaty··on Firefox – Fix parsing of content-length http3 header
The code looks so much error prone. That's scary! (+1 -1, string constant, boolean parameters)

They should introduce some functional programming into this!

etaty··on Mitsubishi Heavy to build biggest zero-carbon steel plant
Nuclear does scale up and down very fast. Reference : https://hal-edf.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01977209/document

However because upfront construction cost is high, you want to use nuclear reactor as much as possible.

etaty··on MDatePickerView – Quick and Easy iOS Date Picker
This is not optimal UX, for me. For this one,I soon as the date is far from the starting date, you have to click/swipe an insane amount of time.
etaty··on EU brings in 'right to repair' rules for appliances
It might not be they progress we are hopping for. We still have to pay for the repair. Increasing the devices guarantee from 2 to 5 years (maybe 10?) is probably better. Then it will be on producers to provide long lasting devices.
etaty··on Hinkley Point C nuclear plant to run £2.9bn over budget
Small modular reactor are already researched https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_modular_reactor
etaty··on California bans private prisons
Just for fun, same sentence on health care.

> I'm so happy about this. Private health care insure are the scum of the earth. They're totally antithetical to a free society that values human life. They often lobby for minimum health care coverage in law (effectively requiring by law a certain percentage of citizens to be marked as clients). Any profit they skim off the top is money that should be spent on research and education. Next up should be criminalizing charging huge quantities for basic health care by private hospitals and the usurious fees on drugs.

I'd wager $1 in their pockets costs society easily 10X that.

etaty··on Swedish Couple Builds Greenhouse Around Home
Great but they should avoid burning wood in highly populated area. Because it is generating a lot of small particules, worse than a car.
etaty··on Slack Is Going Public at a $16B Valuation
Not products, but platforms.
etaty··on Not enough jobs for science graduates challenges STEM hype
This is about Australia, which is not like our average developed country with no primary ressources. When you have one sector in your economy producing most of the export, you have a lot of trouble to have a high level of good job in another sector to export. Your currency exchange rate and cost of life is being driven by your main exportation. Countries rich in oil or other primary resources are like that.
etaty··on China’s Electric Cars Hit Some Potholes
Only Americans need a tank on the road. Weight is a big problem when you want to travel far. In a perfect world, the electric car is not the solution, we should aim for electric scooter, moped, bicycle, ... for our daily travels.
etaty··on An Iraqi who saved Norway from oil (2009)
I think, you are missing half of the context.

He is Iraqi, but his wife is Norwegian. They met in London, during his study. They have a child together, who need cares only available in Norway.

In most countries this kind of immigration is doable (high skills and related to the country by marriage). Is it called immigration?

Migrants moving to a country without having an initial link with that country is a more complex problem.

etaty··on How Water Heaters Have Evolved into Grid-Scale Energy-Storage Devices (2014)
France has been doing it for the past 40 years. France has nuclear power running through the night, so electricity is very cheap. We have a special overnight tariff. France is a big user of water heater and electric radiators.
etaty··on Germany lays out a path to quit coal by 2038
Does that mean goods produced by coal on the other side of the border are still okay to be imported? (pointing finger at Poland, or even China)
etaty··on Oceans 'soaking up more heat than estimated'
We already have solved the issue. We know how to produce massive amount of energy, all day long. We just don't want to implement it, because of local incident risk. And because of this we are in the middle of a global incident. Technology available in 5 years are already too late.

etaty··on Amazon's Bezos Launches $2B Fund to Help the Homeless
All hail to Bezos...

Earlier this year, under pressure from Amazon and other large employers, Seattle’s City Council repealed an employee head tax designed to provide housing and services for the homeless. In a statement, Amazon called the vote “the right decision for the region’s economic prosperity. We are deeply committed to being part of the solution to end homelessness in Seattle and will continue to invest in local nonprofits” that work with the homeless.

etaty··on How my role as CTO has changed as we've grown from 1 to 100 engineers

But this could apply to any Function in the business.

etaty··on Taxation of Carried Interest
Capital gain tax or income gain tax are designed to make the wealthy wealthier. Don't tax "gain", tax the "wealth". This will make it harder and harder to hoard wealth as you gain wealth. Every other "tax" can then be removed.

So with the "wealth" taxt, every year you sum all your possessions and you give X% (20%?) to the government.

This look simple enough to me, did any country try that?

etaty··on Introducing Google AI
have we reached the peak yet?

I am sure there is still some research who don't use AI.

etaty··on 'My £1,000 Macbook Air was stolen at airport security and no one cares'
Airport security is a farce. DutyFree shops are selling what should not be in a plane, not even discussing the batteries. The experience feel like an animal going to the slaughterhouse, except they don't put you to sleep yet.
etaty··on Quantifying the Effect of Tether
The reason you can't redeem Tether is KYC, and AML laws. Tether the company doesn't want to deal with small accounts. What you have in a token tether is a share of an offshore account. It could be all fake, but knowing how much crypto exchange are making in fees, they are making more than enough money. They don't need to create a ponzy. Now if they release an audit, some govs would be interested to pressure some banks.
