et2o··on More Serious Than I Thought: Bank of America 800M Ounces Short on Silver
In Q3 2021 they had profits of about 8 billion... This is not a big deal and it's unlikely they'd lose everything. Certainly poses little to no systemic risk.

This article is nutty

Sixt
et2o··on The absurdity of renting a car will no longer be tolerated
You could actually offer discounts and still come out ahead, likely far ahead as you’d be both guaranteeing a car and offering a cheaper car. Win-win, you just lose the terrible customers acting unethically.
et2o··on The absurdity of renting a car will no longer be tolerated
They actually are going the other way and offering discounts for prepayment since it ensures they will have a customer. The math it pretty easy: if the discount % is < than the no show percentage on regular reservations they’re making money
et2o··on The absurdity of renting a car will no longer be tolerated
Paying ahead of time is often an option now. I just did it.

I’ve never had it take longer than 5 minutes for them at the computer… when and where has it taken them 3 minutes?

et2o··on I was part of a human subject research study without my consent
Could you post your study proposal and the IRB response? This does not seem realistic.
et2o··on I was part of a human subject research study without my consent
You are the first person in this thread to concisely state the major ethical failings. These 4 things are universally required in human subjects research (or IRB-exempt HSR) and it's black-and-white unethical to omit them.

New Zealand is lower than almost all other western countries and is about 1/10th of the US

You’ve replaced your trackpad cable 6-12 times? That’s is incredibly uncommon. I never had any problem with mine.
et2o··on Yara birkeland, the first autonomous and emission-free containership
At some ports already after they are offloaded they are transported around the yard on programmed platforms. The platforms deliver them to waiting trucks. It’s not “autonomous” but I think it’s functionally close. And probably better to have vehicles transporting them than budilding this into every shipping unit, I assume.
et2o··on On the Impossibility of Supersized Machines (2017)
Much funnier now that it's been explained to me. I certainly lack even human intelligence at some moments.
et2o··on On the Impossibility of Supersized Machines (2017)
I don’t find this April Fool’s joke (2017) very funny. What are they parodying exactly?
et2o··on Pfizer's oral Covid-19 antiviral cuts hospitalization, death by 85%
You have a cartoonish view of reality.
et2o··on Woman discovers AirTag on her vehicle after receiving iPhone alert
Seems like Apple should be easily able to identify the original owner of the AirTag. Do they do this if the police request this [or substitute whatever lawful mechanism]? I assume this kind of tracking activity is criminal but am not sure.
et2o··on Interview with Charlie Munger on Controversial UCSB Dorm
You can’t figure out why he’d personally rather be a billionaire and not be liked by everyone vs. not have any money? Which would you prefer?

The people who are so negative about this are completely unrealistic. UCSB is putting students in off-campus hotels right now. There is an incredible housing shortage. Munger is taking a very tangible step to fix it. Some students there live in their cars (plenty of windows, I suppose) Give me a break.

Researchers in pharma are working extremely hard and almost always in good faith. I know this is probably tongue-in-cheek but it's not true.

This is such a cool story. What a man. I wonder what his patients remember of him.

Amazing find. Just curious-why would anyone buy this today? For retro-computing/nostalgia??

et2o··on How to Fire Frank Lloyd Wright
Thank you for this link!

It's worth noting that an $85,000 house back then would be much more extravagent than an $85,000 house today as housing inflation has exceeded official inflation rates. Probably more like a 3-400,000 house if I had to guess. Still, an average house.

et2o··on The Fugate family of Kentucky has had blue skin for centuries (2017)
Methylene blue has a fascinating history in medicine. It was already well known as a treatment for methemoglobinemia however. It's a ready electron acceptor. It's used for a few other conditions today, without a lot of evidence.

Chromic guy sutures are still used everyday in hospitals across the country in certain surgeries. They dissolve very rapidly.
et2o··on Norway to hit 100% electric vehicle sales by early next year
Young tech employees with valuable transferable skills vs. typical food bank user (not meant as a slight!) are different populations most likely.
et2o··on Norway to hit 100% electric vehicle sales by early next year
This is a great point. I would have loved to buy an EV (or trade in my current gas vehicle which I don’t use all that much for an EV), but the logistical annoyances of charging it in a busy city appear to be substantial.
et2o··on Rivian R1T: First Drive in the Electric Pickup
A snorkel is for air intake for combustion. Not required in an EV.
et2o··on Italy wants an exception to Europe's gas-engine ban for Ferrari, Lamborghini
It seems obvious now but even 2-3 years ago I don’t think it was so obvious. Aside from Tesla, other auto manufacturers have just been dithering around.
et2o··on My Bosses at McKinsey Made Us Get on 2 A.m. Zoom Calls
Absolutely still have to lie about hours. Still feels pretty toxic today. Hard to believe it was even worse 15 years ago.
