et-al··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Please check aquifer levels and let us know if they're back to historic norms.
et-al··on Almost no skill required to cook a steak
Interesting, the NYT had a tip on flipping every 90s, but it was with a cast-iron pan and not a "cold sear". That was too smokey for our weak kitchen exhaust, so it was the last time I tried flipping multiple times.

But Lam Lam's cold sear video doesn't seem to make that much smoke on a non-stick, so I'll give this a shot again.

(Personally the reverse sear has been my idiotproof go-to.)

Thanks!

et-al··on We Tested Nonstick Cookware: Coatings Don't Need to Look Worn to Shed Particles
I beg to differ: over-easy is more difficult because the egg whites stick more readily because there's no fat there. And you really can't mess up scrambled eggs.

Everyone here seems to drown their over-easy eggs in oil to make them not stick to the pan.

I can cook an over-easy egg with less than a teaspoon of oil on a non-stick.

If I do it on cast-iron, it's easily twice that. That adds up to a lot of oil being throw away in a year. And while I love butter on bread, I don't want the taste of it with my eggs.

If you watch the videos, folks use a generous amount of oil and butter. They basically "shallow"-fry their eggs.

et-al··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
Logging in is enough friction to prevent me from browsing casually. Especially when I'm on a work computer.

One benefit is my productivity had a temporary boost this week until I find another site to read.

et-al··on Global Warming at 3 °C by 2050? What's Behind the New German Climate Warning
Unfortunately Germany phased out nuclear power, but continues to burn coal.
et-al··on Tidal AI Policy
Listeners will likely want to avoid it.

But "creators" pushing AI music won't tag their slop as such because they want to monetize (surprise, they're not doing it for the love of the game).

So this hinges on Tidal being able to reliably identify AI-generated music.

> They are criminals, and they are committing crimes, but everyone knows that.

77.2 million people in America don't seem to know, or don't seem to care.

Yubikeys could be cheaper. In addition to the two I have, I bought two more to store offsite with friends and family for redundancy (with access to my password manager + important email accounts).

et-al··on Talking to strangers at the gym
I agree with you this was not Dale Carnegie's intent when he wrote the book, but alexmuresan probably takes issue because the "red pilling" crowd have used Carnegie's advice to manipulate people.

Personally, salespeople have randomly complimented me and repeated my name over and over, and on the receiving end it weirded me out. So the problem is that in certain situations there is an overarching "what did you want to get out of that person?". Don't be those people.

Strike up conversations because you enjoy people and their stories.

Yeah, I don't know how this dupe is making it to the front page when the first-party blog post with mitchellh posting in the thread is right there.
et-al··on SFO Quiet Airport (2025)
Unfortunately there's also a large subpopulation of people flying who wear noise-cancelling headphones and have their eyes glued to their phones; choosing to be disengaged from their immediate surroundings.
et-al··on Tim Cook's Impeccable Timing
Luckily there are two lines: the Air and the Pro.

The issue people had was from 2016-2019, the Macbook Pros sacrificed a lot of usability for thinness, when that should only happen for the Airs.

et-al··on Dad brains: How fatherhood rewires the male mind
Yeah, this is highly dependent on the child and parent. Some kids just require attention, are more stubborn, or are just terrible sleepers and that's definitely gonna take a greater toil on the parents.

Sure there's Bringing up Bébé, sleep training, etc. but sometimes you just get difficult kids at no fault of the parents. And some people are just okay with the chaos of children.

et-al··on I still prefer MCP over skills
> Skills are good for instilling non-repeatable, yet intuitive or institutional knowledge.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting you, but can you explain this more? I've been using skills for repeatable tasks. Why an MCP instead?
