esrh··on A new algorithm to compute minimal surfaces [pdf]
I really enjoyed the illustrations on this paper.
esrh··on Duolingo reaches $6.5B valuation on day of IPO
I did this for just about a year, and i can confirm this works if you put in the time. I'm at around 3000 recognizable kanji and can watch/read pretty much anything that's not particularly hard.
esrh··on Launch HN: Atmana (YC S21) – An app to help cut down on compulsive porn usage
Something that interests me is that you mention porn specifically in your title and write about it a lot in your body text, but the website itself seems to have a MUCH broader scope. It seems like there's a disconnect between the marketing and what your intentions are.

Are you developing this with preventing porn addicting in mind first, or are you treating all addictions equally? (IMO, social media addiction is a bigger problem, but as you probably know several good blocking programs exist)

esrh··on China bans for-profit school tutoring in sweeping overhaul
However, if you were to memorize that solution, you can get really fast and accurate with relatively little actual math ability. I believe that method probably will have the greatest increase in test scores for the lowest common denominator. It really is quite abhorrent though.
esrh··on Learn Python by doing fun interactive exercises
Perhaps the website has changed since this comment was made, but they actually do put pricing on the page.

It's just at the very bottom of the page which the user would have to scroll to after seeing "sign up for free" twice prominently without engaging at all. In my opinion, still dark.

esrh··on What did the ancient Romans eat?
"tomatoes didn't come to Italy until the 1500s, when Cortes brought them back from the Americas."

Shocking! Somehow whenever i think of "italian food" the first few images that come into my mind usually involve tomatoes somehow...

esrh··on I built my first serverless robot and won $1000
I've never taught programming, but i find your last point hard to believe. Programming is human-made, and it was created to be understood and used by humans -- in contrast to say, math or science where things just are. Maybe you can claim that only a small subset of people can get great at programming, but i think that the vast majority of people can manage to learn the basics given enough time.
esrh··on Linux: Using goto In Kernel Code (2003)
Maybe the exception to this is recursion? You must have early return statements for the base case
esrh··on YouTube channel “TechLead” creator has created a crypto and pulled the rug
If you think about it that video is really a masterclass in how to instantly capture advertising audience attention. I'm willing to bet that ad had magnitudes lower skip rates than 99% of other YouTube ads.
esrh··on Is Alexandra Elbakyan in real trouble this time?
Something I've always wondered is why Alexandra put her name and identity out there. Would it not have been easier to remain anonymous?
esrh··on AlpineJS – Lightweight JavaScript Framework
I actually appreciate it, because that's what the website is for. https://alpinejs.dev/

If I'm going to a GitHub from the website i want to get straight to the point

esrh··on Show HN: Anki alternative with integrated notes and import/export
I've rarely encounter bugs in Anki. The ones i have encountered have been the result of me hacking on it in some way. Sure it's hard to use and pretty clunky, but i wouldn't call it buggy.
esrh··on Brave, the false sensation of privacy
The entire blog reads like a conspiracy theory 4chan /g/ fever dream
esrh··on How Bitcoin Has Fueled Ransomware Attacks
Next up: how cash has fueled robberies by being valuable and easy to carry
esrh··on Language learning with Netflix
I don't use netflix because of the ethical issues associated with drm and nonfree software.

I've been learning japanese for nearly a year using yomichan[0] mpv, mpvacious[1], and anki[2].

There is a fair bit of setup involved: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbg6ztWecbU&t=0

esrh··on Don’t eat cicadas if you’re allergic to seafood, the FDA warns
Can't exactly say i was planning to, but i guess this is good to know
esrh··on Firefox Release 89.0
> Based on our research, we found out that more than half of you have 4+ tabs open all the time, and some of you have more, a lot more.

This is surprising. I rarely have over three tabs ever, and i usually like to keep it at one. If i really need to multitask that many things I'd prefer to open another window and either splitscreen or move it to a different workspace.

I don't like the redesign. I think I'll be moving to brave or ungoogled-chromium despite my dislike for chromium dominance.

esrh··on Umami – An alternative to Google Analytics
This is unfortunate in a way because it's easy to deny cookiee but hard to spoof all of those
esrh··on Arundhati Roy: ‘We are witnessing a crime against humanity’
I am not familiar with indian politics, but it's really obvious that this article is written as an accusatory political slam more than an article concerned with covid. In my experience, there is probably another side to the story when that happens.
esrh··on Mighty Makes Google Chrome Faster
My problem isn't necessarily that this isn't a good product in the sense that it solves a problem people have in a profitable way, but rather that this problem exists in the first place and the trends technology is taking to solve it.
esrh··on Mighty Makes Google Chrome Faster
So this has what it's come to huh...
esrh··on Farming robot kills 100k weeds per hour with lasers
To me that message implied weed recognition and marking with drones followed by destruction with the cube.
esrh··on High schooler invented color-changing sutures to detect infection
I also competed in the sts this year, so i do know the criteria very well; i can tell you with certainty that there were far more impressive and exciting projects in the top 40.
esrh··on Atkinson Hyperlegible Font
Absolutely brilliant! I'll be using this! Surely people have done this before, right?
esrh··on Parsing Algorithms
While i find the topic really interesting, I'm don't enjoy or learn very well from video lectures.

Is there some comprehensive textbook on the topic?

esrh··on Facebook account banned after linking Oculus account
Lmao thats fucking hilarious. Facebook is one of the worst companies there is and you have to be stupid to buy anything from them
esrh··on Introduction to Computational Thinking with the Julia Programming Language
> By: grant sanderson

I know instantly this one is going to be incredible

esrh··on It's not possible to make bootable backups of macOS Big Sur
