I'm not quite a hacker, more of a programming nerd. Actually, I'm a technical writer who "translates" text from "programmer language" to "plain english", if you know what I mean. Hit me up at eslachance@gmail.com !

It's worth noting that iPhone does not equal Mobile. What about Android? Even if Chrome is the only Android browser supported, that would be plenty!
eslachance··on A rather curious landing page
It has nothing to do with suing or even being afraid to receive spam - Gmail takes pretty good care of that. It's actually the other point, I receive enough random emails from places I can't even remember checking out years ago, this isn't going to be another one.
eslachance··on A rather curious landing page
Still doesn't actually say what your service is supposed to be.

"Interesting" is not directly proportional to "Useful", especially not for anyone in particular. I'm not saying your service won't be either, I'm just saying that without more details, I don't feel compelled to be, at one point in the future, notified that this mysterious service I completely forgot about has finally launched its beta.

Give me something, anything, and I'll consider it. But "Hey, give me your email and I'll tell you when my random, indescribable app is available!" just doesn't cut it for me.

eslachance··on A rather curious landing page
Ah yes, yet another service that wants my email address without ever telling me what for, no privacy policy, no promise not to spam, nothing but vague but unhelpful description of a service.

Pass, thank you very much.

eslachance··on Try right clicking GitHub's logo
Can someone get on crunching numbers so I can get a pie chart on how many users disabled the right-click, how many people never right-clicked (hey, maybe a tutorial-like tooltip bubble that says "Right-click me!" ?), trends in right-click usage over time and separated by geo localisation? That should be trivial to do, I'm sure.

Thanks for the precision. And indeed, I second that question!
eslachance··on My Really Basic Github Intro for CS Illiterates
The odd thing is, I know what github is, I use it, I've done my little share of git... But I have absolutely no idea what "CS" means. Can someone shed a light on that? (Talk about illiterate, huh?)

It really depends on the market. I'm just comparing to Captivate and similar screen simulation software, really. If they can make a buck selling a $500 piece of software, you can do it on a smaller monthly fee as a SaaS for sure. I'm happy to see you were already planning these things, can't wait to see them! Perhaps you should start a newsletter, or a notification system so we're advised of your progress. I, for one, am very interested in seeing you evolve!

* Edit *: little feedback on useability: After grabbing a share link, I visited the URL and was very confused on which ones of the "Tutorial" or "Quick Guide" option was selected. You're going against the grain with these buttons, the "pressed" version should be the active one, and not vice versa.

eslachance··on Forget about Kevlar: Liquid Body Armor Hardens on Impact
Question: If it hardens when it is disturbed, does it mean that it hardens if the wearer runs, for example? This would mean you still can't properly armor joints...

There's something a little wonky about your Java detection. On my laptop, I have Java 6 Update 5 installed, but your page it telling me "we have a problem! Iorad needs you to get java" (Windows XP SP3, Firefox 7.0.1). On the other hand, in a virtual machine (WinXP SP3, Chrome 19), I logged in and got all the way to "pick which window to record", but at the same time Chrome was telling me to install Java (which wasn't installed yet!). I then had to refresh the page to get it to show my active windows. Very weird indeed.

A few comments about the product itself: - Customization and branding is critical in companies, so make sure you quickly add a way to customize the bubbles, color scheme, and add a watermark logo on the recordings (or the "View" page). - Exporting would be an awesome way to turn this into something trainers could use in a class environment, especially if it could be used "offline" (not for editing, just actually viewing the tutorial). Flash would be great, or even just HTML5. Make sure it can integrate into existing HTML though (embedding). - An "Automatic" mode where things would run by themselves (non-interactive), along with mouse paths and clicks, would go a long way to compete with professional tools that do this already. In this case, exporting could be static videos. - Voiceovers (either directly recorded or uploading audio) would be awesome. If combining voice overs and automatic mouse controls, make sure you have some timing adjustments tools there :)

You're already a good ways through to becoming a competitor to software like Adobe Captivate. I see a bright future for you and, as soon as the above features are implemented, I'm convinced that you'll get a lot of clients like my current employer lining up and saying "Shut up and take my money!".

eslachance··on What to do when a company refuses to fix a vulnerability I disclosed to them?
If only the company is put in danger and they stubbornly refuse to resolve the issue, I'm not exactly sure why anyone would work so hard to convince a company to do this. The job of reporting the issue is done, a corporate decision has been made. If that decision is to remain vulnerable, as long as it does not affect users directly, why bother?

Unless, as others suggested, you can legally make a profit out of it, then by all means! Otherwise, just let it go...

eslachance··on Google Racing
That was my thought exactly. Google's April Fools don't often have any link to reality (I still remember the moonplex, that was cool), so in this case because the self-driving car is already successful, it sounds stupid to have such a tiny step as a joke. Of course, the video someone else put in the comments does have some "foolsworthy" comments by drivers especially... We'll know for sure tomorrow!
eslachance··on Google account activity
I opted in, and I get a notice that it can take a couple of the days for the data to appear. An email notification should be sent to me at that point.
eslachance··on Google account activity
It can probably build a very extensive list of skills (what languages you know, spoken or programming), preferences (habits, sexual, etc), hobbies, a full social network map (from emails and social networks), character (from analyzing emails, searches, etc), amongst other things.

I'm not necessarily saying that this data is already compiled somewhere - but Google being a data-oriented company, they could most likely do all this if they really wanted to.

eslachance··on Google account activity
This doesn't even scratch the surface of what Google could show you. If they showed us the extent of what they can actually infer from our activity, some people would probably shoot their computer, burn their router and modem, and never look at a screen again.
eslachance··on Ask HN: How do you convince your bosses to use the right tools?
It depends on your level of expertise and the type of tool. For instance, Sphinx to write documentation is free, but you need to have at least a desire to write in markup to create it, and I'm assuming that single-sourcing multiple user manuals with conditional text and variables is not exactly trivial. Plus, sharing the writing of such a user manual between more than one person requires the use of a third-party solution, a version control system, which also requires some training & expertise to use properly.

Where as, on the other hand, if you can convince your boss to dish out $200 a month per user for something like Author-It, you get an extremely powerful system that does everything an authoring tool is supposed to. That's what I'm trying to do right now with my boss, convince him to switch (not from Sphinx, but from another cheaper software solution called Flare), and it's not an easy task.

eslachance··on Just start an experiment, not a damn startup
It's one of the many different ways to start a company. Assuming you are not selling a physical product and don't actually require an office, and also assuming you are (or know) a developer that can work for free... Sure, that's exactly the right way to do it in my opinion.

Actually, that's exactly the method that me and my friendly developer are using for our own product, which should launch sometime this year. We both have a day job which would be hard to leave (we both have families to feed). And you're completely right that a single server is enough to host the MVP and we can expand further once we know we're on the right track.

eslachance··on Encyclopedia Britannica Print Edition Discontinued After 244 Years
They're doing digital right. They know that they will sell many more copies of the digital version, because it's digital and because they lowered the price mark.
eslachance··on Encyclopedia Britannica Print Edition Discontinued After 244 Years
But how much does it cost to staff the people that actually do the research for it, update the encyclopedia, etc?

Printing books isn't just about printing books. Someone actually has to come up with the contents and this person has to be paid!

eslachance··on Responsive.is
It is the page I was linked to. But responsive.is displays a random website, and this website in particular didn't work. I guess if I had realized it was just a random website perhaps my reaction would have been different.

Edit: For some reason, http://responsive.is/trentwalton.com now works fine. A Quirk, perhaps?

eslachance··on Responsive.is
This is absolutely horrendous in Firefox 7. About 60% of the bottom of the screen is completely black, leaving only about 300px high of contents, in any of the views.

This isn't IE6, it's FF7, which is 5 months old! Screenie: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/wmSzaq9yag_BXWSeUCPeel...

eslachance··on MyTextarea - a simple online text editor
I don't think I would ever keep a browser open just to be able to do what the basic text editor on every OS in existence can do. Notepad, GEdit, whatever...

I don't get the point of this, at all.

That would be because he mentions deleting it:

It looks like telling Google to not show my profile in search results was useless, the only option was to *totally delete it which I have now done*.
eslachance··on Show HN: My weekend hack project, Appload.io, get your app's first 1k users
I'm not exactly sure why it's not simply iPhone vs Android. It's not like "HTC" and "Samsung" often have apps that will work on one but not the other. At first I didn't even realize that you did have Android apps, because "Motorola" can be older java-based phones, "Nokia" can be a black and white flip-phone... Not exactly obvious at first glance.

So yeah, just say "iPhone" "iPad" and "Android". Hell, remove the drop-down and make it a logo that you select instead, that should be even easier.

eslachance··on Piracy - You can't have your cake and eat it
My only issue here is "but don't decide to take the law into your own hands...it's not your decision."

It's unfortunate that people feel that laws are simply things that are imposed on us by above and are outside our power. You don't simply bend over for the law to screw you over. Laws are there to be changed, they are there to be improved and prevented so that we can all benefit from them in the right way.

But hey, if you want to bend over, be my guest.
