esistgut··on I moved my digital stack to Europe
Waiting for your writeup, especially the Bunny part. We moved away from AWS but Cloudflare remains a point of failure, we are going to remove it as soon as we have some spare time to do the required research.
esistgut··on Live near your friends
Can I ask where are you from and where are you living/traveling? What you describe seems to be just the standard way of living and interacting with people almost everywhere here in Italy. Well, it is more common in smaller communities and in the southern part of Italy. Of course it is a generalization so it isn't an absolute truth. My point is that even with this kind of interaction I find it very very hard to find friends even remotely comparable to the friends I have been growing up with. It feels like the word "friend" is misused if I use to describe people I have know for 30+ years and people I have met in the last couple years both.

I buy Nike running shoes because they are cheap, durable and comfortable, I don't actually use the to run. The other obvious answer to this question is "because they are status symbols", for some people anyway.

I don't know you so the following could be wrong or condescending, please take it as a general consideration towards people in a similar state of computer science fatigue and it really talks more about me than you: before learning a new language only because of a latent feeling of guilt please consider there is a world of knowledge not directly related to CS and STEM that could literally broaden your senses or at least the way you approach reality. Think of learning a musical instrument: you will literally perceive new nuances in an aspect of reality, akin to see new colors. You have only one shot at this, are you sure, in the end, another programming language will make any difference at all?
esistgut··on Phoenix Dev Blog – Streams
Today they rolled some kind of upgrade and my backend become unreachable for hours, this is not my first problem with them. I assembled a quick docker-compose.yml and moved to Hetzner. Fly is pushing a lot of blog worthy stuff but it is not production ready.
esistgut··on EU lawmakers approve effective 2035 ban on new fossil fuel cars
It's not a ban on gas vehicles, it's a ban on new sales of gas vehicles. Your car would be perfectly fine.
esistgut··on Modern PHP
Lighthouse is an hidden gem. I moved some projects from Node/Typescript to Laravel/Lighthouse after discovering it.
esistgut··on AMD is now worth more than Intel
This may be a naive tough but the unfolding of the ukranian events had me wondering again and again if more attention should be used when buying items coming from China and TSMC. The rise of the Ryzen CPUs had me switch to AMD from Intel after many years. Next time I could actually prefer the worst CPU as long as it is built in the west. Is this an oversemplification? Am I wrong? Anyone here share similar toughts?

Push "alt" when you are in game and "tab" should work again.
esistgut··on Blender 3.0
AMD HIP/ROCm support is there but AMD still hasn't released drivers supporting it.
esistgut··on What Is AMD ROCm?
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/r1gb05/radeon_6600xt_c... this show some numbers on ROCm performances.
esistgut··on What Is AMD ROCm?
Shouldn't it work on top of the open source drivers?
esistgut··on Blender 3.0 takes support for AMD GPUs to the next level
OptiX is not an Intel technology, both CUDA and OptiX rendering backends for Blender's Cycles are powered by Nvidia.
esistgut··on Blender 3.0 takes support for AMD GPUs to the next level
Maybe ROCm support for Navi hardware is finally going to be released.
esistgut··on The AMD “Aldebaran” GPU that won exascale
Today a Blender beta version with HIP support has been released. This is working on RDNA hardware (RDNA2 officially supported, RDNA1 enabled but not supported). I guess a release date for ROCm is approaching after all.

esistgut··on Fundamentals of Piano Practice
I think you are being too hard on "adult beginners". I'm not sure if it is relatable but I'm learning guitar, just finished my second year self teaching it. I can't see myself as a guitar player just yet but I'm starting to have a clear perception of the stuff I have to learn and more importantly the stuff music players around me know and I'm pretty sure I can reach and overtake them. I'm thinking about "average level skills", there will always be a 8 years old kid with better abilities but I find the idea of comparing oneself to the whole world is unhealthy and far from fair. This doesn't apply only to music: the mere existance of Fabrice Bellard should prevent me from ever reaching a computer keyboard ever again.

I live in Italy, here there are two kind of musicians: 1) conservatory majors, with really really strong "fundamentals" but none to zero improvisation skills 2) other people who followed a learning path of anglo-saxon derivation, usually they have some degree of play-by-ear and improvisation skills but they show a severe lack on fundamentals skills. By "fundamentals" I mean sight reading (meant as sight reading on first sight, everyone can read with enough time), ability to sing what you want to play in tune before playing it, strong inner sense of time and subdivision, knowledge of theory and harmony. Side note: if you ever see musicians perform in Italy (maybe this applies to other European countries like Germany and France too) there is a very easy way to recognize if they have a classical / conservatory background: look at their feet. If they tap a foot there is a very strong chance they have no classical background as it is seen as the kind of baby wheels thing that prevents solfege from developing a strong inner sense of time.

Back on topic: as you can see there are these big two big subsets of music learning. What I'm doing is simply mix them: I study sight reading and solfege (trying to sing in tune) but at the same time I spend time transcribing by ear and following improvisation methods. There are some very strong sinergies in this: the ability to sing (in tune, not mumbling it) makes transcribing orders of magnitude easier. Same applies to knowledge of harmonic motions. Doing progressive reading exercises vastly improved my ability to play and understand odd rhythmic patterns to the point I can actually sense the lack of precision they have when I play in a garage band with my friends (not professional musicians but they have been playing for more than 20 years).

To make an even simpler example: I can play without looking at my guitar, a lot of people can't. This feel a lot like seeing people unable to type on a computer keyboard without looking at it.

esistgut··on Take-Two Sues Enthusiasts Behind GTA Fan Projects Re3 and ReVC
Side story: these developers have created their own studio (Invader Studios) and released their first game just a couple years ago, Daymare 1998.
esistgut··on If Not SPAs, What?
I am currently working on projects with Django (jinja2), Laravel (blade), Node (ejs) and Next. I can't possibly understand how so many people in this thread are preferring server rendering frameworks. As soon as you have a non hello world application (= complex state shared across multiple components / page) a SPA application is so much easier and productive. And Next brings this experience back to public facing frontends because it supports prerendering along other things.

esistgut··on Prisma 2.0 Beta: Type-safe Database Access
The issue title mentions the sync feature but the same happened with migrations and I don't want code randomly dropping data from my database even if it is in a development environment anyway. But that is not the point because no one would run automatic code like this on production data without some kind safety net. The point I was trying to make is "listing features as non beta doesn't make them stable". As far as I am concerned the alpha preview of Prisma 2 has been far more stable than every other version of TypeORM I had to work with.
esistgut··on Prisma 2.0 Beta: Type-safe Database Access
https://github.com/typeorm/typeorm/issues/3636 this is last one I encountered before abandoning TypeORM.
esistgut··on Prisma 2.0 Beta: Type-safe Database Access
I experienced many kinds of problems with TypeORM, including data corruption and lost. Before using it in a project I strongly suggest taking a look around its issues or at least reading the issue about its future [0].

On the other side my experience with Prisma 2 so far has been excellent and I found a very good community around it.

esistgut··on Italy and South Korea virus outbreaks reveal disparity in deaths and tactics
Italy has not yet reached the limit for ICU beds, whatever it is. People dying here is still within capacity, for now.
esistgut··on Covid-19 is now officially a pandemic, WHO says
Before helping people already in locked regions if you are not I beg you to do whatever you can to talk some sense into your representatives. The level of actions you want from your point of view would probably be seen as "drastic" or "exaggerated". It is not.
esistgut··on Italy is extending its coronavirus quarantine measures to the entire country
This kind of thinking is exactly the mistake China and Italy did. Please, I beg you to learn from our errors.
esistgut··on Italy is extending its coronavirus quarantine measures to the entire country
Please note that Lombardy has a very very good health service. The OECD put a score on this [1]: 9.9/10. This is in the top 5% across all regions. Other european regions seem to have lower average scores and their governments are not taking serious actions. [2] How the US is reacting from my perspective (italian confined near Rome) seems borderline madness. Something about this situation confuses me a lot.
