Yes, California's population is in slight decline, the reason is that California did not build nearly enough housing in the past decades, making it increasingly unaffordable to live there.

erispoe··on Downturn career decisions
It's not about loyalty. It takes time for a new employee to be productive, especially in senior and leadership roles where understanding the context of the company is important, and building relationships is key to you performing your role. If you're gonna leave after a year it's not worth it to invest 6 months or more on ramping you up.
erispoe··on The AI Unbundling
People who buy art do not buy it because of the technical execution. You may need to execute a piece in some way to get a desired effect, but the technique is the mean not the goal.

This is not to take away from the achievements of AI. It's that creating pictures adhering to a prompt with some degree of creativity is very little of what art is. Maybe it will replace some part of commissioned illustrations where the artist's name does not matter (e.g. some avatar pic?).

We still value, financially, some material goods for much more than they cost to produce. Or for much more than their almost identical mass-produced counterparts.

It's also much easier to eat a very high amount of calories in relatively little volume, compared to any other time in history. It's very easy to eat thousands of calories in what would be a healthy volume of vegetables. Pack more calories and people will eat more calories before they actually feel full.

LGV Sud-Est, France's first and Europe's most used HS line, sees 240 trains/day/direction, with a capacity of 13 trains/hr, to be improved to 16 tr/hr in 2030. It's a trunk line with many different service patterns though, mostly linking Paris to southern destinations.

erispoe··on Cryptocurrencies Have Broken Almost All of Their Major Promises
> The most common form of inflation is due to an increasing money supply

Not really. The money supply only affects inflation in that it increases demand for some things quicker than supply can meet demand. In that regard, untargeted stimulus money did that. Let's not forget though that there is also significant supply disruptions with covid, the war in Ukraine... There's also strong supply-side factors to the inflation we're experiencing.

erispoe··on El Salvador's Bitcoin Buys Tracker
The fundamental difference is that the US is the currency issuer of the USD, and that the USD is still overwhelmingly a reserve and trade currency for other states.

Neither of these are true for El Salvador and BTC.

erispoe··on Ask HN: Is the stock market's growth largely anything more than inflation?
Prices are a function of supply and demand, largely. New money being created and spent is only an issue when it durably creates more demand than supply can absorb. This is where inflation happens. With covid we had across the board stimulus that didn't care too much if supply was matching, but we also had supply disruptions everywhere.

This is incredibly hard (impossible?) to do in practice, but imagine that you create new money and use it to buy goods where supply can be perfectly adjusted in regards to demand. Now your money creation has zero effect on prices.

On top of that, a low level of inflation is actually a policy target. Low, but not null, because public policy wants to incentivize productive investment and not hoarding cash. And because deflation is much harder to curb (hello Japan) than inflation for a reasonably developed and productive economy.

erispoe··on Can growth continue?
Automation shifts productive labor to intellectual labor. A century ago value productive labor was probable 99%+ physical labor, but it's probably now much less.

erispoe··on What caused all the supply chain bottlenecks?
The same rebalancing happened in Europe, and Europe doesn't have close to the issues the US has regarding supply chain. Europe's major ports are automated and operate 24/7, port to hinterland relies much more on rail than trucking. Overall, the US supply chain was already very fragile and outdated.
