ericls··on So what’s next (personal news from developer of popular CoreJS polyfill)
We should pay this guy to have a vacation before we pay him to write more code.
ericls··on The future (and the past) of the web is server side rendering
The claim that server side rendering is faster than client side rendering is interesting.. How come one machine(the server), is better than 1000 machines(the client)?
ericls··on Money creation in the modern economy (2014) [pdf]
Might need a 2014 in the title?
ericls··on Reddit's favorite products in one place
The search doesn't work. I searched for "linux laptop" but got bunch of unrelated stuff
ericls··on Former world champion reveals that she was ordered to lose Olympic semi-final
Yep, I don't watch it anymore because it's not a game between human beings anymore.

I think players should be not allowed to disclose their nationalities in the Olympics

ericls··on GeForce Now: A Review
I love articles that list the 1. 2. 3. 4. etc..
ericls··on Ask HN: Is there a tool / product that enables commenting on HTML elements?
How do you define the _identity_ of an html element?
ericls··on SQLite Internals: Pages and B-trees
Good read.

I wonder how the underlying physical disk or file systems handle the writes or updates

ericls··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
Twitter's toxicity comes from human being human not twitter being twitter
ericls··on Guido van Rossum: Let Web3 die in a flaming ball of fire
The problem with web2 is not from the technology
ericls··on Cloudflare have made it impossible for me to unsubscribe from marketing emails
Cloudflare has being charging me for services I don’t have for more than a year, every time I open a ticket they said they will cancel it but they kept charging me.
ericls··on Python Design Patterns (2018)
I don’t like these content about programming. Why listing a bunch possible of answers to some solved problems instead of try to dive deep into the problem themselves.

This feels like encouraging people to buy a bunch of cameras instead of teaching people how to take good photos.

A good solution may end up looking like some patterns, but sourcing good solutions from a pool of patterns is impossible unless the problem you are trying to solve is the exact same as the one a pattern is solving, in the same environment and context.

I do find the content can be very useful for many, but can we not call them patterns?

ericls··on Have we simply stopped the process of innovating new things that solve problems?
exactly, sometimes I think if somehow I could push our understanding of ourselves forward even a little bit further, I'd die with a smile.
ericls··on Have we simply stopped the process of innovating new things that solve problems?
We don't know enough about ourselves to know what the problems are anymore.

ericls··on Blame Cronyism, Not Capitalism
Capitalism describes

Capitalism doesn't prescribe

We should praise Capitalism for describing humanity better than other *ism

ericls··on I went back to using a ThinkPad from 2012
Old thinkpads are like framework laptops
ericls··on Some people want to run their own servers
When you observed the world, and found that it is somewhat centralized, to an extend that you'd like to see a change.

Have you figured out why it is centralized in the first place?

Just trying to re-start the process and expect to see a difference? It's going to end the same way.

Because I'm sure centralization is not a Web2.0 property, but a human property. You don't change Web2 to do decentralization, you change humanity.

ericls··on Wish HN: Happy Holidays
Merry Christmas!
ericls··on Postgres is a great pub/sub and job server (2019)
I actually implemented this after seeing this post back in the days, and it worked great, but writes are somewhat slow after it passes ~1m messages per day in my small VPS, and then I switched to redis.
ericls··on What is a Bitcoin worth?
That's too complicated, the worth of a bitcoin can be defined in the following two ways:

1. the price the last person paid to buy a bitcoin

2. the price the next person is willing to pay to buy a bitcoin

Until human beings figure out the Truth of the universe or at least the meaning of life, the word "value" means nothing. We don't deserve to use the word "value", because we haven't being able to define it.

ericls··on HTTP/3 Is Fast
In practice, you'll have load balancers and reverse proxies some where in between your server and your client. Does HTTP/3 still make a difference in these cases?
ericls··on Asahi Linux for M1 Macs Progress October-November 2021
If it can run linux, it can conquer data center
ericls··on Keep the web free, say no to Web3
If the web if kept free then there are other groups of companies or "communities" that are profiting off your data.In no way has server costs ever been free.
ericls··on Keep the web free, say no to Web3
All the things about "community" owned just raise the question that what are the structures the communities adopt, what are the roles and what are their rights and responsibilities, and how are people elected to the roles. And how do you make sure these communities don't end up like the existing communities (countries, companies, NGOs, etc...) that you are trying to differentiate from?

You can't just have a bunch of people and call it community owned. By that definition then this world is already community owned, the internet is already community owned.

You can't also just bypass humanity, this world is the way it is largely due to humanity, not capitalism, not socialism, not because it's not community owned. If the human beings in your community inherently have the same traits as human beings in other communities, how can you make sure you community doesn't end up like the other communities?
