erickf1··on Scorched Earth 2000 – Web
Thank you for this blast from the past.
erickf1··on PHP 8.5
Until two years later the same thing is said about PHP 9, 10, 11. Constant change is not good.
erickf1··on Show HN: SQLite Online – 11 years of solo development, 11K daily users
This reminds me a lot of RavenDB. I'm impressed.
erickf1··on Earth was born dry until a cosmic collision made it a blue planet
From a purely mathematical, scientific, and logical standpoint, I must regard this article as entirely speculative. The scientific claims it presents are extraordinarily improbable, and sound reasoning compels their complete dismissal.
erickf1··on Bell Labs Scientists Accidentally Proved the Big Bang Theory
The article only proves the big bang to be a theory.
erickf1··on Facial recognition vans to be rolled out across police forces in England
The UK is almost lost.
erickf1··on We’re secretly winning the war on cancer
Humans are certainly not winning the war on cancer. Not even close. Now, even children perish from cancer in America. Things are getting worse, not better. When you get cancer, you'll better understand the hopelessness.
erickf1··on Major Flaws in 2025 Meta-Analysis on Fluoride and Children IQ Scores
Very good point!
erickf1··on DOJ will push Google to sell off Chrome
If it's not Google, it will be someone else that dominates the browser market.
erickf1··on Priced out of home ownership
Landlords have 100% risk. Look what happened to California, when the state said tenants did not have to pay rent. Same for Washington, NY, IL, etc... The vast majority of people with rental properties are just regular people trying to make a living.
erickf1··on 'Lavender': The AI machine directing Israel's bombing in Gaza
Since when has war ever been tit-for-tat. Since the beginning of time, if a nation where to attack and make war with another nation, they had to measure carefully the consequences if they were to lose... because losing meant losing everything. This is no different. Russia attacking Ukraine is no different. No one is tracing and counting every bullet Russia fires and certainly no world court is saying anything at all to Russia… or to Turkey, or Iran, or Syria, or anyone else… except for Israel. Gaza attacked Israel and like any nation that goes to war, they will either win or lose. Consider carefully before declaring war against your enemy…. Everything is at stake.
erickf1··on Show HN: Reor – An AI note-taking app that runs models locally
I like the idea. Unfortunately, could not get it to work on Linux. Making a note caused a crash. Searching notes crashed. LLM chat would cause crash. Hope to see it work some time.
erickf1··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
The UN has no power to exercise binding laws over sovereign states.
erickf1··on Universal cancer vaccine trial shows significant improvement in overall survival
Sounds like another money maker for the pharmaceutical industry that does nothing for the patient.
erickf1··on Type 2 diabetes rates in US youth rose 62% after Covid pandemic began
Point taken, and I do not dismiss the potential. It would be prudent to consider all the new things and not dismiss either without careful review. Most kids suffered very few ills as a result of having covid compared to adults. Diabetes among children is a very rare thing, not even a blip on the radar for children (until now). Also, if we want to say that covid caused an increase of type 2 diabetes among children (no doctor is saying this by the way... neither is the WHO)... what is that evidence? I mean, is there a historical precedence that demonstrates that having one illness to trigger an entirely different illness? For example, do survivors of cancer tend to get diabetes... or did the survivors of the black plaque experience a sudden increase of diabetes... etc... I do not believe that to be the case. I'm not discounting it... I do not believe their to be such a treasure trove of past cases that can be pointed to as models to consider. But, worth a look. My concern is more of the unwillingness I see in so many people to consider the potential of all the options on the table. No one seems to really want to talk about, the other option. All medicines cause issues over time. Take a tylenol every day for 2 weeks and see what happens to you (please, don't do it). How much more something entirely new and experimental.
erickf1··on Type 2 diabetes rates in US youth rose 62% after Covid pandemic began
It sounds like you made up your mind that the vaccine could not possibly be at fault. Nothing to see here, right? You will not even consider the possibility? Not even a 1% probability? Note I said nothing about religion, so not sure why you bring that up here when speaking of the probabilities of potential cause, but I believe your stand requires significant faith.

I do not consider covid to be harmless. Many died, including my own family members. We are talking about diabetes among children. Children were hardly impacted by covid. But many did take the vaccine. Food for thought.

erickf1··on The worst programmer I know
All I had to do was read the title of this article and the first sentence to understand that this is an example of what's wrong with the software development industry. I would rather work with people that act like good people and are human, than to work for the idiots measuring your every breath looking for a reason to fire you.
erickf1··on FedNow Is Live
It won't take long before all banks are using it. Once the banks are using it, employers will begin making payments using it. Once employees are receiving digital currency payments from employers, cash will end soon after.
erickf1··on Everything that uses configuration files should report where they're located
Agreed.
erickf1··on New study suggests that lab-grown meat produces up to 25 times more CO2
I would never eat processed manufactured meat. This is just another food category being converted to processed foods. Processed foods make you sick, weak and takes your life. Want a short unhealthy life? Eat processed foods. Pharma will be there for you to speed up your own efforts.
erickf1··on A woman is in custody after refusing tuberculosis treatment for more than a year
It is a terrible thing for individuals to face imprisonment due to their unwillingness to accept pharmaceuticals being administered to them without their consent. This situation represents a significant abuse of power by both the government and the medical community. This abuse of power will certainly spill into many areas of peoples lives, one of which, consequently, people will develop a profound fear of seeking medical assistance, akin to the fear experienced during World War 1/2.
erickf1··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
An expense chart showing how that $17B was spent would be interesting to everyone reading the article. It would also keep the government accountable to the people on how their taxes are spent.
erickf1··on I'm never investing in Google's smart home ecosystem again
I stopped using Google products a long time ago. Seeing articles like this and hearing what others are dealing with just encourages me to see that I made the right choice.
erickf1··on Chinese surveillance balloon spotted over U.S., Pentagon says
What would China do if a USA surveillance balloon appeared in their skies? Exactly. You watching Taiwan?
erickf1··on Show HN: A new search engine UX I've been working on in my free time
This is very good. I'm going to start using this first and see how it goes.
erickf1··on Tell HN: Godaddy canceled my domain, gave me 2h to respond, then charged €150
Similar thing happened to me. Except they sold my domain of 8+ years to a porn service provider within 24 hrs. Explain that one to your customers. I no longer do business with Godaddy.
erickf1··on Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com
I had the same experience with GoDaddy. I searched a domain name, which was available. The next morning I attempted to purchase the domain and it was owned by GoDaddy.com. I also had a domain with them for 9 years, which expired for a day and when we tried to renew, they owned it and were selling it for a much higher rate. BIG, BIG WARNING! Do not use GoDaddy to search for domain names. I would stay away from them period.
