ergvgdvgrd··on The video call revolution is dead
I want a pinhole camera in my monitor so I can make eye contact with the other side when I'm looking at them. That's the biggest lacking feature to me on pc video conferencing.
ergvgdvgrd··on LinkedIn adopts protocol buffers and reduces latency up to 60%
It's micro if it is so small that you question why this wasn't done as a library call in the same process.
ergvgdvgrd··on Intel Manufacturing Gets Its Own Profit and Loss Gearing Up for a Spin-Off
Having worked with Intel fab from inside Intel design and with TSMC at a different company, Intel fab would do very well to standardize and work on supporting their customers. If they decoupled and provided better processes, it would greatly improve the experience for those working with the fab. As it is right now, the Intel fab has always been the tail that wags the dog. They've carried Intel off and on for so many years that if design wants something and the fab pushes back, well design gets to pound sand and find some workaround to the fab's processes.
ergvgdvgrd··on Debris found came from missing Titan sub, says friend of passengers
Sounds fun. If I was driving a nuclear sub in the Atlantic sea, I'd definitely find an excuse to pop over and play with the kids splashing in my pond.
ergvgdvgrd··on Why are so many young Americans adopting fake British accents?
100% my point. Drawing a line at the purity of "maths" over "math" is the beginning of a rock fight in a village of glass houses.
ergvgdvgrd··on Why are so many young Americans adopting fake British accents?
For your next act, defend the British pronounciation of "Worcestershire".
ergvgdvgrd··on Why are so many young Americans adopting fake British accents?
I thinks it's possible with the access we both have to the other country's media via Netflix, prime, Hulu, et c., that our accents re-merge. When I was a kid, British accents were a little harder and Scottish accents were impossible, but after 15 years of Netflix, I don't even notice British accents anymore and Scottish accents are noticeable, but understandable.
ergvgdvgrd··on Functionality that has been deprecated in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9
My experience is if you buy very common hardware, other people have already driven over all landmines.
ergvgdvgrd··on Anonymous Tor Phone
We don't know that these other op sec issues weren't cases of "parallel construction"
ergvgdvgrd··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
I did something similar, but gave up chasing parasitic electrical losses and didn't want to make the solar panel to power it huge.
ergvgdvgrd··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Me too! Was astounded by the price of a standard solution and said to myself, "I can do that cheaper [ assuming my time is worth less than minimum wage.]" Still works, 7 years after install.
ergvgdvgrd··on The secret ingredient to hustle culture: A virtual assistant in the Philippines
So much whining about the insecurity. If someone offers you triple your current salary, but more insecure, take the job and live on 33% of the new job wages while paying down debt and saving/investing the rest. You can find an equivent crappy job again in the future, but you may also conquer a new job market for yourself.
ergvgdvgrd··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
I do this virtually with a piece od software called barrier. https://github.com/debauchee/barrier
ergvgdvgrd··on Walmart to close three tech hubs, tells tech staff to return to offices
Only if they can all simultaneously execute the cooperation strategy of the Prisoner's Dilema. Meanwhe every corporation that defects gets to pick from the pool of remote workers with _reduced_ competition from the corporations choosing the "cooperate" strategy.
ergvgdvgrd··on Ask HN: Is StackOverflow Dying?
Stackoverflow is like online gaming . Just mute/ignore the morons and jerks, and get on with you life. I've received a ton of hate on SO, but I've also received so many answers to questions that would have taken me at least a day to figure out on my own. Some angry dweeb launches a tirade at me, and some kind soul gives me an answer. Ignore the dweeb, go to lunch, ship the feature.
ergvgdvgrd··on Ask HN: Is StackOverflow Dying?
I'm an American and I've been the recipient of hate on SO too.
ergvgdvgrd··on RESTler is a stateful REST API fuzzing tool
Shameless plug. See also https://mayhem4api.forallsecure.com
ergvgdvgrd··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
The rule I was taught growing up in USA was 15% and it was really only for sit down restaurants where waiters served you at your table.

Now, tipping in USA has metastasized, but I haven't changed. You want to play a guilt trip game after every business engagement? You'll lose against me. Tip for pouring a cup of drip coffee?---nah. Tip for making fast food? Nope. I will not enable the tip-everywhere culture.

ergvgdvgrd··on We invested 10% to pay back tech debt
Not writing for your audience is a losing game. They may have been fantastic developers, but the siren call of upper management may be what they think and speak now.
ergvgdvgrd··on Netflix has created a self-fulfilling cancelation loop with its new shows
The irony with your comment about the Wheel of Time is that the _book_ very nearly was canceled... the writer died after taking a very long time to finish what he did, but then Brandon Sanderson stepped in and finished the series after the original author's death.
ergvgdvgrd··on Ask HN: Should I quit my job?
Their processes allow it. They simple have a process of saying, "processes don't allow it" until you notify them that they'll need to get the necessary waivers up the chain of command or you'll be working elsewhere shortly.
ergvgdvgrd··on Haiti left with no elected government officials as it spirals towards anarchy
Like how Baltimore is a law abiding paradise?
ergvgdvgrd··on Remote work’s toll on cities
A story like what you're describing is in the etymological history of the word "villain". The rich had villas outside the city and people who lived and/or were servants in a villa were villains. No judgement here, but interesting parallel.
ergvgdvgrd··on Django makes it easier to build better web apps more quickly and with less code
If you use django rest framework, it's a subset that covers flask.
ergvgdvgrd··on Ask HN: How is the job search coming along for people who got laid off?
What is mint?
ergvgdvgrd··on The Exceptionally American Problem of Rising Roadway Deaths
Police are people too. Just as Twitter employees were demoralized by Elon's behavior and it effected everything they did, so are police officers effected by morale. Traffic stops can escalate very quickly, but why do it when no one has your back?
ergvgdvgrd··on The Exceptionally American Problem of Rising Roadway Deaths
Floyd riots and defund the police. If your DA and politicians won't stand behind you, cops retreat to the donut/coffee shop. Completely logical response.
ergvgdvgrd··on The economy is the biggest bubble in world history, says Robert Kiyosaki
Moral aspersions aside, dumb they aint.
ergvgdvgrd··on The economy is the biggest bubble in world history, says Robert Kiyosaki
I'd love to be half as stupid as the majority of landlords I know in my local landlord association who speak highly of RDPD.
ergvgdvgrd··on The economy is the biggest bubble in world history, says Robert Kiyosaki
I think it is more, "rich people buy assets and poor people buy liabilities."

Almost every successful real estate person I have contact with thinks very highly of RDPD. If you listen to real estate podcasts, almost everyone recommends RDPD. I agree it is light on many details, but many people seem to get a great deal out of that book.
