equoid··on A neuroscientist who believes addiction is not a disease
Surely the "addiction is a disease" mindset is a defensive response to the (especially in America) mindset that addiction is a moral failing. I.e. one crackpot opinion begets another.

The truth about 'addiction' is complex and different for each individual but, given that no one is born an addict, at heart the concept describes how many people have learnt to cope with their individual circumstances. Disease and morality are both inadequate to discuss this.

equoid··on What's new in Xcode 7
"Last update on XCode 6 made it impossible for some 2012 models to run it"

I find this difficult to believe, care to provide evidence of it being an Apple problem?

equoid··on Self-Promoters Tend to Misjudge How Annoying They Are to Others
This is the most delusional piece of self-justification I have read in years. Your use of words like culling and optimise makes me suspect you need to work on your social skills, a lot.

No one likes braggers, no one. Sometimes braggarts who have power or some other use are tolerated, but only as long as they have to be.

equoid··on Samsung is imploding in China
Making money is the only significant metric. They may have a large market share but if they're not making money from it who cares?
equoid··on Why Apple is obsessed with gold: It's all about Asia
Come on, its not difficult. Apple makes products in gold because it makes those products more appealing to Chinese consumers. If you're going to try and be an Apple hater at least also try to be intelligent about it.
equoid··on Voyage to Nowhere: The Amazon Kindle Story
Are there a "large number of people who think they prefer full justification"? Citation required. I think most people don't think about it.
equoid··on Distraction is a kind of obesity of the mind
But what is luxurious (or even exclusive) about HN? If you are going to generate some culinary comparison perhaps a niche burger (tofu?) would be more appropriate.
equoid··on Distraction is a kind of obesity of the mind
A luxury product created by gratuitous cruelty? Seems a bit harsh.
equoid··on 1,000-year-old onion and garlic eye remedy kills MRSA
Also turmeric which many uses in folk medicine for stomach and liver ailments.
equoid··on A 63-pass FORTRAN compiler for the IBM 1401, illustrated
Reordering could alter the program's semantics as well as being extra work for such limited machines. FORTRAN permitted explicit and implicit declarations. It would be quite legal to use I as an implicit INTEGER variable then later explicitly declare it to be REAL and use it accordingly so the position of the declaration in the source code was significant. Then there are declarations inside subroutines etc.
equoid··on Microsoft's new foldable keyboard
So, do you have any actual proof of this allegation or is it just another gratuitous accusation from an Apple hater?
equoid··on MySQL 5.7.6 is out
"The default sql mode has changed."

So long as it possible to redefine the mode at will on a per connection basis or on startup then the integrity of data held within MySQL cannot be guaranteed.

equoid··on What Heroin Addiction Tells Us About Changing Bad Habits
That is silly. Most addicts don't have the resources to change their life structure, where would they go? what would they do? how would it be paid for?. It is only the rich who can check to a rehab clinic.
equoid··on What Heroin Addiction Tells Us About Changing Bad Habits
I would turn this round. Your habitual behaviour comes to be associated with your environment. By removing yourself from that environment you find that those habits become weaker and may vanish. Behaviour isn't changed so much as behavioural cues can be eliminated.
equoid··on Brands Are Wasting Money on Facebook and Twitter, Forrester Says
Regrettably a significant number of back ends (principally Microsoft ones in my experience) regard the +bit as malformed and reject the email address.
equoid··on Microsoft Azure Outage
The SLA mentions 99.9% or 99.99% for Database connectivity. Where does 99.999% come from?

Do Microsoft say this about Traffic Manager or are you suggesting you have to pay for extra services to get the advertised reliability figure?

equoid··on Adam Curtis – Happidrome – Part One
Neither interesting, nor surprising really. Curtis requires people to pay attention and think before they comprehend what he is saying. The Cook piece merely required them to click "like".
equoid··on Tim Cook Speaks Up
I don't think it is an original observation but Steve Jobs chose a very capable and worthy successor. Tim Cook gets more impressive each time you hear anything about him.
equoid··on Leica M Camera Timeline
The difference between film and paint is that with a little skill it is possible to make your own paints. Film? Not so easy.

Film sales have been in decline for over 10 years. Before that, prices were subsidised by huge numbers of people who developed one film a year: christmas trees at each end of the roll, beach balls in the middle. There may be a vinyl-like resurgence driven by the nostalgic but I tend to doubt it. At some point film will simply be too expensive to produce. If you want to shoot film I would suggest you buy what you can and keep it in the fridge against the day when it is no longer available.

equoid··on Disable sharing of Spotlight searches with Apple
The fact that most people could look at that code and have no real clue what it actually does seems to have escaped you. This is in any event not the entire source code, as most of the work is done by function calls which most people would not know how to validate.
equoid··on Show HN: Four numbers can predict your lifetime risk of a heart attack
I live in the UK, I think of my height in feet and inches and my weight in Kilograms. Blood pressure is in mmHg while cholesterol is in mmol/L.
equoid··on Amazon Must Be Stopped
The Kindle is attempt to do exactly that, breadth of offering and convenience is a pretty big hurdle to overcome.
equoid··on Amazon Must Be Stopped
Not picking on you in particular you are just an example of an attitude which assumes that we either have complete freedom for businesses to do as they wish or (gasp!) "communism" with state control. The "law of the excluded middle" springs to mind.

There are plenty of examples of state regulation in the greater interest, pharmaceuticals being an obvious example, road safety another. It is not in the greater interest of society to allow businesses to trample over each other or to do as they wish.

Amazon is acting to the detriment of a large number of industries and ultimately to people in general by stifling competition and by being monopolistic and abusive.

equoid··on SQLite 3.8.7 is 50% faster than 3.7.17
Premature optimization is that which is done before the need for the optimization is clear. Thus debugged, feature complete (for now) ... 'Established' really has nothing to do with it, if that established product has bugs then those should be addressed before attempting to optimize. Unless of course, the lack of optimization is itself the bug.
equoid··on In the medical response to Ebola, Cuba is punching above its weight
America needs China and the Saudis (for investment/loans/manufacturing and oil respectively). It does need Cuba so can happily pretend to be principled by bullying them.
equoid··on sshrc – make your ssh sessions feel like home
But ssh -t forces pseudo-tty allocation and doesn't take arguments, what you are doing is appending command strings to the ssh command line.
equoid··on No Association Between Salt And Blood Pressure, Study Finds
I stand by my verdict. He was stating that ring fenced measurements are blown out of proportion because they do not reflect real life behaviour. I'd expect a citation otherwise I am happy to dismiss it as silly.
equoid··on No Association Between Salt And Blood Pressure, Study Finds
Don't be silly. That measurement technique is to allow you to isolate and measure the effect. You seem to want to infer that the effect does not occur in any other circumstances.

That is as inane as disregarding crash test dummy results because they take place in a controlled environment which is not the same as 'real life'.

equoid··on A Reminder To Investors
You may like to think that about entrepreneurs but you'd be almost clinically deluded if that was what you did think.
equoid··on A Reminder To Investors
Exploiting a position of power or influence so that one can "get away with it" does not mean that it was ever considered appropriate behaviour.
