ensignavenger··on Show HN: A VSCode Extension to edit HTML visually in real-time
Many of Microsoft's extensions are closed source. This one does not appear to be, but MS has been known to replace open source VS Code extensions with closed source ones in the past.
ensignavenger··on UCLA professor says he's homeless due to low pay
Zillow lists over 1300 places for rent in Los Angeles for less than $1600 a month, which is easily affordable on a $70k salary.

So they still have a few years.
ensignavenger··on Tesla's value drops $60B after investors fail to hail self-driving 'Cybercab'
Within the Boring Companies tunnels? Other private roads and campuses? Of course, that isn't going to drive high sales figures. It sounds more like a specialized vehicle for a narrow market, but the self driving technology should be applicable across their product lines.
ensignavenger··on Valve says Steam users don't own a thing, GOG says its games can't be taken away
I would love to do that, but I have always had trouble getting it to work well with GOG. Maybe it is something odd with my systems, but I have found it is easier to just download the games from alternative sources than GOG and run them in Lutris, setting them up manually.
ensignavenger··on California bans sell-by dates
"best buy" is pretty plain English. It means the manufacturer beleives the product will be at its best up to that date.
ensignavenger··on California bans sell-by dates
It seems to me like a quibe about verbage. I suppose "sell by" could be interpreted as a supplier telling a store what to do with their own goods. But on the other hand, the supplier has a brand on those goods and has a significant interest in protecting the brand.
ensignavenger··on US weighs Google break-up in landmark antitrust case
My point is that advertisers still "win". Even if they might be paying less if the market were more competitive or transparent.
ensignavenger··on US weighs Google break-up in landmark antitrust case
Then they must be valuable enough for what you are paying. If they weren't, you would let Epson have them knowing they were losing money on them, and you would spend your money on better valued things.
ensignavenger··on US weighs Google break-up in landmark antitrust case
If the advertisers weren't winning, they would stop using those platforms.
ensignavenger··on The Open Source AI Definition RC1 Is Available for Comments
"Reproducible build" is a term used to refer to getting an exact binary match out of a build. This is outside the scope of the OSD. I am not certain, but it sounds like this is what they are talking about here. Just because you run the build yourself doesn't mean you will get an exact match of what the original producer built. Something as simple as a random number generator or using a timestamp in the build will result in a mismatch.
ensignavenger··on End of the road for Google Drive in Transmit
Facebook users shared data with their friends. Those friends gave access to the data to CA. So like if you share a document with me and I then give CA access to my GDrive.
ensignavenger··on We're excited about our new roundabout
In some cases, I see roundabouts used in places a stoplight would be much better. It isn't roundabouts vs 4-way stops, its roundabouts vs a whole bunch of other options.
ensignavenger··on Do We Need a 37-Cent Coin? (2009)
...Though they may get some publicity benefit from it, which is why I don't go out of my way to donate using corps as a proxy. If its a small amount that I may not otherwise make, for a good cause, sure. But for my more deliberate giving, I would avoid corp proxies. So I don't give through my employer (unless they are offering to match it with their own funds).
ensignavenger··on Do We Need a 37-Cent Coin? (2009)
That's not how tax law works in the US. See https://taxpolicycenter.org/taxvox/who-gets-tax-benefit-thos...

The corp is acting as a collection agent on behalf of the charity, they don't get to deduct it as a charitable donation. Even if they did, they would have to then count the money as income, which would offset any tax deduction they would get, giving the corp 0 net tax benefit.

ensignavenger··on DMNO: Environment Variables Evolved
I like the simplicity of envars too, but they shouldn't be used for secrets. They are not designed to be secure, and are too easy to leak. Containers often allow placing secrets into files, and specifying the filepath in an envar. Files have access controls that are designed for security, so while it takes some thought, they are easier to secure.

Arbitration clauses almost always run both ways. I am not even sure if they are legal to go only one way.
ensignavenger··on Show HN: Open source framework OpenAI uses for Advanced Voice
I am going through that right now. IRS owes me 3 years of refunds, but I can't even get an appointment to see them. They hang up one when I call (after hours on hold), and won't let me just visit the local office. My current attempt is to work with my US Senators office.
ensignavenger··on Show HN: Open source framework OpenAI uses for Advanced Voice
Yeah, that is why I doubt it will happen. Maybe a website where you can sumbit an issue and have it resolved in a reasonable number of days would be fine.
ensignavenger··on Show HN: Open source framework OpenAI uses for Advanced Voice
It would be really nice if the IRS would ALLOW you to walk in and ask a question!
ensignavenger··on Why Gumroad Didn't Choose Htmx
Different authors and very different tones, but yeah, that essay was tongue-in-cheek, so I guess I could see why you might think that at first. I thought it might be, when I saw the title, but then I read it and realized quickly it was sincere.
ensignavenger··on Why Gumroad Didn't Choose Htmx
HTMX has posted links to negative articles before, but I am not aware of any as thoughtful as this one. So it wasn't all that surprising for me that they would share this. That they went out of their way to solicit it is extraordinary, though!
ensignavenger··on Why Gumroad Didn't Choose Htmx
I love that HTMX is posting this (and other similar things) on their site. It seems like there were a lot of legitimate reasons why HTMX alone was not a great fit.

I am not a frontend specialist, but I do find it interesting, but here are some of my thoughts on the points made:

1) Don't they have to validate forms on the backend anyway? What made it so difficult to get their backend system to communicate back up to the frontend? There are absolutly great reasons in many cases to do form validation on both the frontend and backend, so in those cases you would want more than just HTMX, but I am a little confused at the phrasing of this issue?

2) HTMX alone may sort of push apps in this direction. In some cases that is a good thing, but apparantly they decided they need to do somthing different for their customers. I hope it was a good decision for them. I do think HTMX could be used effectively to make a site much less CRUDy, but I can't really argue with their results in this specific case.

3) This is an interesting argument. I would love to know more about how this team using AI tooling and has become so dependent on it that this was a major issue for them. It also brings up an interesting question for the future- if AI dev tools become a major thing, will it raise the bar too high for new frameworks/programming languages to get enough tooling an integration for adoption? Not particularly relevant to Gumroads decision making process, but an interesting line of thought.

4) A common complaint with HTMX. I think some projects just require more than just HTMX provides. Maybe future HTMX plugins will fill in this gap though?

5) Certainly a legit issue. One reason I like Django (and even Python) is because of its deep community of integrations and add-ons.

Perhaps they would have better luck with something more full featured like https://unpoly.com/ would fit their needs better than HTMX, while still being similar to the concept?

ensignavenger··on Why Gumroad Didn't Choose Htmx
HTMX is getting a lot of attention from other communities to, another one I am part of is the Django community, which talks about it a lot.
ensignavenger··on Why Gumroad Didn't Choose Htmx
What makes you think it was tongue-in-cheek? It sounds quite genuine to me?
ensignavenger··on The latter half of October, the maintainer goes offline
How many holidays do you get in addition to that? Is that in any industry, such as fast food service or grocery store clerks, or just professional jobs, or only your own industry? I know time off isn't the best in the US, but a good comparison requires a bit more info.
ensignavenger··on A single cloud compromise can feed an army of AI sex bots
Defendants claiming that video is fake will be a challenge that future courts (and probably very near future, if not already) will have to deal with. In the short term, it will likely require the folks involved in the CCTV system to keep better records to show a proper chain of evidence, and be available to testify in court as to this chain of evidence. Courts have always had to deal with the veracity of evidence brought before them.

But it is a lot easier to have folks who are in charge of systems testify as to their authenticity than to have a child who has been abused testify to the authenticity of the abuse, thus the logic is defensibly limited to child abuse.

ensignavenger··on A single cloud compromise can feed an army of AI sex bots
The first would only require banning fictional depictions of heinous crimes against children (When the children look like real ones), as it is intended to protect children from having to testify to what happened to them. One could argue that adults shouldn't have to testify to being the victim of various terrible crimes either, but that is a different argument than what was being made.
ensignavenger··on EU: Definition of "potential terrorists" opens door to broad information-sharing
Do you think EU governments should be able to track potential terrorists at any threshold, or do you think that authorities should wait until an actual terrorist attack occurs before doing any investigating? If there should be a threshold for when they can start a coordinated investigation, what should that threshold be?
