enjalot··on Show HN: Markov chains explained visually
the other visualizations on setosa.io are pretty great. There really aren't enough of these around if you ask me. another set of good tutorials that are at this level is Red Blob Games: http://www.redblobgames.com/ focused on games but introduces math/coding concepts very intuitively and in a practical manner.
enjalot··on Rap Genius Raises $40M, Changes Name To Genius
there is more to life than money. some people value being part of a community, helping others or creating their identity enough to spend lots of time on it.

money is a simplistic proxy for adding value to the world, try understanding value instead of money and you might get richer yourself.

enjalot··on Show HN: Breach – A modular browser built on Chromium and Node.js
A lot of us "young" devs grew up on windows and remember what a hostile place it was to learn. My disdain for Microsoft is anything but lazy, I have worked very hard not to have to develop for Windows. I think if you pull your head out of the sand you'll find many serious projects that don't depend on Microsoft. 99% of Web servers run *nix and any project done for the web doesn't need windows. How many billions of dollars are being made on Android and iOS?

As far as I'm concerned Microsoft has squandered any goodwill they may have been due, if they deserve any credit it is for driving me to open source.

enjalot··on The Developer's Dystopian Future
The honesty is relatable, the fear is real. As someone who is working with/on some of the newfangled technologies it's as if my coworkers are constantly trying to put me out of touch!

I've seen a bunch of new and sweet technologies come out in the last 3 years that I've been doing web development. The thing that comforts me is that what I haven't seen is a diminished number of problems that need solving. In fact it's the opposite, the more things tech enables, the more problems people seem to have!

If you change your mindset from "what technologies do I need to know" to "what are the problems I can solve with technology" everything changes. There are thousands of organizations getting by on excel spreadsheets to model and manage billions of dollars. Do you need to know responsive-Angular-distributed-Go to tailor some software that solves real problems? no. Do you need it to be cool on HN? maybe.

enjalot··on The MtGox 500
I love seeing the mostly red charts, looks like people that mined a lot. check #145 and #180. These people are selling at exponential curves on a log plot... mind blowing.
enjalot··on Hackers? Techies? What To Call San Francisco's Newcomers
"I still use it as an amiable label for the nerdy guy who comes to my office and rolls his eyes when I ask why my computer won't talk to the printer down the hall."

why does this piss me off so much? it was all well and good when we were servin' you, and now we make something of ourselves and you mad?

while I can see that change is happening a little too fast for most people, I do believe it was society that set us up to be nerds at the unpopular table. WELL ITS MY CAFETERIA NOW BITCHES! WHAT?

enjalot··on Data Structure Visualizations
I just wish there was a button in each example that would populate with some demo data. I like to watch something go and then figure out it out by playing with the parameters. From this I don't immediately know what kind of inputs and outputs to use/expect (integers? floats? strings?).

very sweet project tho!

enjalot··on Data Structure Visualizations
An alternative path would be to add it as a plugin to Codemirror and put it up as a javascript tool. That way you share a technique in an environment that is familiar to a lot of people, and is easily shareable.

people are starting to play with interesting techniques for augmenting programming like: http://jsdares.com/ http://tributary.io https://github.com/CrypticSwarm/js-code-walker

enjalot··on How GitHub No Longer Works
Circus? you could barely call it a sideshow. I remember the glory days when we wrote perfect algorithms by hand and mailed them by post to each other. We called it Mathematics.

I've watched beautiful concepts come to life only to choke on the reality of bits.

This isn't a circus, it's a shitshow.

enjalot··on Why You Should Never Use MongoDB
but then you can take it out of mongo into something made for analytics. this is a challenge i'm currently facing, but I feel the flexibility mongo has offered in letting us iterate on our data collection is paying off in the end.
enjalot··on Annual Income and Cost of Living for BART Employees
Here's an interesting essay that expands on this exact point: https://medium.com/armchair-economics/ec6139b54795

it's written by a collaborator of this project and a transportation PhD student at Cal.

enjalot··on Annual Income and Cost of Living for BART Employees
Tech is a booming industry, and there aren't enough people with the skills to do the work that needs to be done so high salaries are common.

It is unclear what the supply and demand curve is for public transit employees, but it will be skewed by labor contracts. The issue is that a lot of people don't make as much as BART employees (or have nearly as good benefits). If their salaries of BART employees are higher than they could be to keep the BART running, and they can upset the lives of hundreds of thousands by striking to get even more it makes people concerned.

enjalot··on Annual Income and Cost of Living for BART Employees
it's actually an efficient way to communicate the nuances going on with the issue. "Reader friendly" would be the quote that the average BART employee makes 80k in pay and benefits. This chart shows you what those figures break down to, emphasizing the base salary while still making you aware of benefits (which are less concrete and uniform in meaning).
enjalot··on Annual Income and Cost of Living for BART Employees
you can see the "Total Cost of Employment" for every employee here: http://enjalot.github.io/bart/#chapter-03 or a aggregated view here: http://enjalot.github.io/bart/#chapter-035

As sxywu mentions, this is relevant to managements perspective not necessarily the employee.

enjalot··on The Beautiful Table - communicating football statistics with D3.js
I agree. This is a good start!

I would love to see the teams closer together to get a quicker sense of comparison. The nice thing about d3 is it makes it fairly easy to add interaction, so giving the user an option to re-layout would be a cool addition.

enjalot··on Interactive visualization of self-immolations in Tibet
nice use of d3!

I also found this blog post hard to read, random missing punctuation and grammar mistakes made it hard to follow. I don't see much new in this one.
enjalot··on Cmdrslog - Chrome Extension to save screenshots on tab refresh
I wanted it because i realized that a project i'm working on has changed a lot over the past several months. would be cool to have a visual history of the evolution. I take manual screenshots but thats too unreliable, and timelapse software is too far on the other end of the spectrum as overkill.

the best kind of data collection is the kind you don't have to think about (and that is only collecting what you want it to...)

enjalot··on Cmdrslog - Chrome Extension to save screenshots on tab refresh
author here, just started this because i was surprised there wasn't something like it out there already. i wanted something more automatic and specific to my projects than timelapse.

i'm currently struggling against the FileSystem API and getting the images out of the browser in a reasonable fashion.

up next i want to work on a simple ui to manage the urls you are tracking, as well as enabling a time delay (one of my projects can take some time to load on refresh).

love any help/feedback!

enjalot··on Notch trying jsFiddle
it's not polling, its reevaluating code when codemirror triggers an event for text changing (which uses the dom underneath).

the problem is from calling setInterval every time the code is evaluated, leading to way too many function calls/second

enjalot··on Notch trying jsFiddle
Here is a version adapted for Tributary: http://tributary.io/inlet/4199801/

Press play in the bottom left to have it go, and scrub numbers/colors to your hearts content!

Part of the reason it slows down in livecoding is because of the way the original code uses setInterval, and every change reevaluates the code which polutes the scope and starts way too many threads going. I've added optional functionality to Tributary which gives you a run loop (using requestAnimationFrame) that doesn't polute anything.

Hope this helps!

enjalot··on American Higher Education: Not what it used to be
If you are a mathematics professor than your education got you a job worthwhile to the community. Many people get degrees which have not prepared them to contribute because they can't find a job that matches their qualifications.

I went to school with plenty of people who were there because thats just what you do. They partied too much and studied too little and now they are overqualified and underemployed. The fact that you can be overqualified to me is the loss of "sturdy common sense", not everyone is as centered as you appear to be and I think you overestimate more than a few people.

enjalot··on Scrub values in JavaScript live
Interesting implementation! I'm using CodeMirror tokens and regexs to make numbers scrubbable and hex colors pickable: http://tributary.io/tributary/2958568/

I've been wanting to explore the route you took more, especially for doing even more code modification. I'd like to let users click on a number and turn it into a variable, or have a special object where members are added to the global table. You can then create controls external to the code with that table and hide the code (good for presenting after you're done coding). Looking forward to checking out your code!

enjalot··on D3, Conceptually - Lesson 1
This is a nice tutorial. I like the order and accessible way it introduces selections and data binding, which are some of the harder things to get into when starting with d3.
