enimodas··on The lost joy of music piracy
My spotify homepage has had a "discover weekly" playlist for like 10 years. Found some nice things there, changes every week.
enimodas··on JPEG XL Test Page
Would be nice to also see decompression speed and maybe a photo as a bonus round.
enimodas··on We invited a man into our home at Christmas and he stayed with us for 45 years
Here in Belgium there's a village that's famous for doing this. Currently there's about 100 people there who are living with another family. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gezinsverpleging_(Geel) If you translate you can read about it.
enimodas··on James Harrison, whose blood donations saved >2M babies, has died
Lowers heavy metals or something
enimodas··on In my life, I've witnessed three elite salespeople at work
It's a summary of the title, but not of the article.
enimodas··on Secret 3D scans in the French Supreme Court
Pournelle's iron law of bureaucracy: In any bureaucracy, the people devoted to the benefit of the bureaucracy itself always get in control and those dedicated to the goals that the bureaucracy is supposed to accomplish have less and less influence, and sometimes are eliminated entirely.
enimodas··on The Bastard Operator from Hell (1999)
I expected to experience something similar, but on reading, it's so over the top that my brain has no problem realizing it's a joke. Violent movies on the other hand I can't really enjoy much anymore.

>Are laws written by mediocre people hence full of loopholes?

Guy once told me his job was to write some law in Spain, or for the EU, or somewhere in between. He submits his writings to his bosses, who tell him (paraphrased): "it's too clear, too watertight. Go back and make it more ambiguous." So he did.

enimodas··on The case for JPEG XL
Tangentially, in his linked page "hall of shame" https://jon-cld.s3.amazonaws.com/test/ahall_of_fshame_SSIMUL... , he argues humans prefer row A to row C. Personally in most cases I prefer row C. It may have less color accuracy, but is often a lot sharper, which in my eyes stands out a lot more.
enimodas··on What’s behind chinook and chum salmon declines in Alaska?
You prefer the random quota, divorced from reality overfishing of the soviet union then? https://psmag.com/social-justice/the-senseless-environment-c...
enimodas··on Mindustry – Open-Source Game
Funny, I quit this game after a couple of tries because I found it too hard. So even 6 year olds are better than me.

enimodas··on Listening to songs can cause a physiological response known as “frisson”
I've read those explanations of 'avalanche, thunder, earthquake, stampeding animals' before, but I think those are bunk. Most of those are far too rare to cause evolutionary pressure. Wolves, on the other hand... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrU4OY6W1qE

Used for a nice effect in music too, in Ben Frost's the carpatians https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qheTGTNxRVs

Try listening to that in a dark room!

enimodas··on Top stablecoins shed $7B in May as traders redeem tokens en masse
I'm sorry but you don't know what you're talking about. Look into how Dai works, or check daistats.com
enimodas··on Kraken shuts down global headquarters because ‘San Francisco is not safe’
There was a video going around recently of Kensington Avenue in Philadelphia with a lot of fentanyl zombies.
enimodas··on The Boschian Horror of ‘Elden Ring’
I had the same problem with sekiro, but found a fov fix (for pc) that also included a slowdown option. 95% speed was already enough for me to make it enjoyable, but still a challenge.
enimodas··on Popular Patreon creators are being hit with Vimeo price hikes
5 cents per gb seems pretty expensive. A quick google puts azure at 4cents/gb, as the most expensive of the big ones, and ones i haven't heard from at 1cent/gb.
enimodas··on Android 12 forces you to choose a default browser unless you disable Chrome
Copperhead os? Not cheap.
enimodas··on Estonia, allies to trigger NATO Article 4
Cultural encroachment (think monroe doctrine), nato encroachment (think Cuban missile crisis). Less important but probably considered: geopolitically Russia needs buffer states in the east because there's no natural defenses/borders. It's an easy invasion from that direction.

Good article: https://www.france24.com/en/europe/20220222-moldova-then-geo...

Key quote: “Russia is always anxious about foreign penetration – not only in terms of military involvement and political engagement but also in cultural terms,” Fasola told FRANCE 24. He pointed to the so-called “colour revolutions” that brought pro-Western governments to power in Georgia (2003) and Ukraine (2004) – and which the Kremlin perceived as “instruments of the West to drive those countries away from Russia”.

enimodas··on Ask HN: What do you consider the best (long) reads of the year?
I found some good ones in the pocket best of 2021 https://getpocket.com/collections/pockets-best-of-2021
enimodas··on Worker pay isn’t keeping up with inflation
Pretty sure that's because it's yearly inflation and March 2021 on that graph means inflation between March 2020 and March 2021, and corona "started" then.
enimodas··on Worker pay isn’t keeping up with inflation
Plenty of stories on /r/antiwork make me feel sick too
enimodas··on Plans you're not supposed to talk about
Work well as long as you don't care about externalities such as polution, congestion; poisoning, maiming and killing consumers and employees
enimodas··on Crohn’s Disease: Is the Cold Chain Hypothesis Still Hot?
He's not using a normal sauna, but something with heaters/lamps. I'm not dedicated enough to try it myself: https://www.reddit.com/r/PsoriaticArthritis/comments/es5w6f/...
enimodas··on Crohn’s Disease: Is the Cold Chain Hypothesis Still Hot?
I think railing against diets like you're doing here is harmful. Research is finally going in this direction, and as you can see, there's plenty of annecdata for people where dieting was beneficial, or even let them go into full remission. Sure, there's no diet that works for everybody, and diet doesn't help everybody, but that just means it's more difficult to do studies on, not that it's a wild goose chase.
enimodas··on Crohn’s Disease: Is the Cold Chain Hypothesis Still Hot?
Did you see that guy on, i think on the AS reddit, who did extreme saunaing? You seem to be willing to try things, maybe it's something for you ;)
enimodas··on Hackers are spamming businesses’ receipt printers with ‘antiwork’ manifestos
The point is that mimimum wage hasn't kept up with productivity increases and that all the added profit of the last xx years is going to the top of the company. Example https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/qp769d/think_this...

And that "benefits" shouldn't be something that's held over your head as a reward or as something that can be taken away on the whim of some other people. Healthcare etc should be a right, not a bargaining chip to keep the lower class under their thumb.

enimodas··on Tell HN: Happy Thanksgiving Everyone
Let's try to not go shopping this year so those retail workers can also have a happy thanksgiving.
