emsign··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
50%? Not 51%? Or 49%?
emsign··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
That's old news. It was known that Palantir was responsible for the murder of the school girls. What's new is that the Pentagon finally admits to it now that it's out of the focus of the news cycle. A very typical strategic disclosure.
emsign··on AI chatbots give wrong answers to financial queries 'most of the time'
Not a surprise, so do financial advisors: garbage in = garbage out.
emsign··on Hitting a NERVE with attacks on AI-powered brain-computer interfaces
This sounds like something from a sci-fi horror movie. "Snorting charged nanoparticles" that can then be manipulated by magnetic fields sounds more like a weapon or life-long disability than anything I'd want to be done to me willingly.
emsign··on Flock worker calls police on reporter filming public camera installation
But you're not working for Flock, are you? We could go on much further until we reach the what Popper called the Tolerance Paradox: "If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them."

The point is that total surveillance is like the destruction of tolerance or in thie case privacy, and it makes watching the watchmen impossible. There's a point of no return and before that one is reached resistance IS allowed or else you lose everything.

emsign··on Flock worker calls police on reporter filming public camera installation
Guy is not just a technician, he's a technician working for Flock installing surveillance tech to monitor the public. Wrong life choices have consequences like being filmed being complicit in establishing a surveillance regime.
emsign··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
Not the current government, it's unwilling to even call this out as what it is: a crime.
emsign··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
OpenAI won't make their illegal activities public by themselves.
emsign··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
Why is nobody in jail for this? Oh, I see, it was an AI agent. So nobody is responsible. What's going on here? Do we see the undermining of the legal system by putting LLMs as intermediaries between us and our bad deeds?
emsign··on The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
I buy CDs, DVDs and BluRays second hand. You can get pretty good deals because there's still people who sell their entire collection because "everything is available through streaming now!". I just hope there will be much more people who sell their old stuff in order to pay for those rising subscriptions prices.
emsign··on The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
As long as these comments come up, people haven't given up against this flood. It's a good sign. Also consider cause and effect. These comments only exist because of AI content.
emsign··on Anthropic Is Building a Predictive Surveillance System to Monitor Activists
> “Samdesk gave us about 60 minutes of advanced notice that the protest organizers had moved the timeline,” Ellison explained. “That extra hour was critical. Without it our executives would have departed their meetings, they would have ran right into the heart of the disruption.”

Shielding the executives from the voices of the people. There's a recurring pattern that people with power physically distance themselves from common people, journalists and victims of their actions. They do not want to get personally confronted, every interaction "with the public" needs to be 100% controlled by them. Critics can ask them anything, sure, but only on their terms. This is how they protect themselves from responsibility.

emsign··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
If it was only the small shops doing it... companies that could easily hire ad designers use AI slop images full of errors.

But they both consume too much water. That's why we need less of both. Much less golf courses though.
emsign··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
The fun of some is the horror of others.
emsign··on Ask HN: Are others seeing Google's reCAPTCHA rejecting Firefox users?
They have nothing to do with Cloudflare. Their challenge page is only made to look like the one from Cloudflare. It's entirely their own page. Only the reCaptcha challenge is not theirs. And the reason why nobody gets redirected is because the have used up their free enterprise quota with reCaptcha, as you can read in the widget itself.
emsign··on Ask HN: Are others seeing Google's reCAPTCHA rejecting Firefox users?
It's not that. Archive.today have simply used up their free quota.
emsign··on LLMs as a Cognitive Virus
A virus that is trained on mostly the wort human output the internet had to offer.
emsign··on Billionaires Are Funding 'Anti AI' Content [video]
Thanks, that's a very eye opening interview!
emsign··on Samsung's Processing-in-Memory (PIM)
It's funny how the article just assumes PIM be for computing weights of a model without even mentioning it in the introduction.
emsign··on Creepy Crawlies
It's because the companies doing this bought the current government.
emsign··on Creepy Crawlies
Makes me wonder how much garbage they actually collect across the web. That can't be good for the quality of the LLM.
emsign··on Creepy Crawlies
What a waste of energy LLM training is. Meanwhile Himalayan mountains are crashing down. I love this world. It's so idiotic.
emsign··on Smaller reactors bring nuclear power closer to fulfilling its promise
The future will be solar. Especially in underdeveloped regions without a centralized power grid, solar makes the most sense. And even in developed countries having solar panels on your roof and a battery in your cellar is the most cost effective way of getting all your electricity needs.
emsign··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
They are buying the user base.
emsign··on Omarchy development practices lead to predictable security issues
Marc Andreessen helped establish the modern web browser, he has always been an Ayn Rand fan for example. But politics wasn't that important back then, I guess? And I just think there simply were not a lot of opportunities to gain some political and financial capital from voicing their fringe believes for people like them back in the day. They were busy building systems and software, now they are busy building or changing political systems.
emsign··on Omarchy development practices lead to predictable security issues
This. The alt right in German speaking countries are calling themselves "Identitäre", which was inspired by French Les Identitaires. For all their criticism of what once was just a niche and fringe academic leftist movement, they are hypocritically are mirroring at least mirroring it if not more so. I believe they have actually helped progressive identity politics become mainstream as a reaction to their attacks on minorities, as a reaction to their hatred the mainstream has signaled their solidarity with minority identities, this is the main reason for Rainbow flags, to show solidarity against hatred.
emsign··on Omarchy development practices lead to predictable security issues
It's always the same give these people enough prestige and power that they feel untouchable and their true nature comes to the surface. No more dogwhistling needed he thinks, I have powerful wealthy backers and their lawyers now.
emsign··on Omarchy development practices lead to predictable security issues
Then why chose a distro that is being maintained by one person. I would NEVER recommend a Windows/Mac and first time Linux user to switch to such a distro. Not just his political views no quite practical implications are key here: what if this guy has a heart-attack? The distro will be abandoned. What if his development PC gets compromised? The distro is fried in both cases. The more developers are on the team holding the credentials and responsibilities the better, the safer a distro is. Omarchy is nothing more than an experimental distro and shouldn't be used productively or as your main OS. Simply because it's run by one guy, one single point of failure.

It's the same reason why you mustn't recommend CachyOS to newcomers either, they're still just two people running the show, although they're aware of the risks that comes with it and trying to expand their core team.

emsign··on Omarchy development practices lead to predictable security issues
Ugh, gosh really? I looked at one of the videos of the... eh excentric developer of the distro where he was presenting 4.0 and I was wondering about that retro neon design of background images he seemed to adore so much. I was wondering why someone would still think this Fashwave design to be cool. It's been what? 10 years when this trope peaked?
