emrehan··on GPT-5.6
I am looking to rent an apartment in a new residential tower. I have asked Fable and Sol to scrap the listings from various sources, deduplicate them and present them as a web application. Just using the cowork/(ex-)codex application interfaces.

Fable had issues with the sourcing and organizing images, and shoot itself at foot looking for shortcuts as usual. As I was getting it fix these back and forth, I copied my prompt and gave it to Sol.

Sol has surpassed my expectations by far. With a one shot simple prompt on a complex task, it gave me a working web app with everything I want with minor issues to track and fix.

emrehan··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
AI apartheid has begun.
emrehan··on Artificial intelligence is not conscious – Ted Chiang
There is no definition of consciousness and this piece by Ted Chiang does not move the needle forward.

My current conclusion is there is an experience of consciousness in my locality (refraining from using “I” for room for “no-self” worldview). This conscious experience of the reality with other humans and animals sharing biological substrate gives me enough justification to assume there are other consciousness as well, preferring to err on this side not to hurt potential consciousnesses.

If it feels as there are artificial consciousnesses as well, it makes sense to extend the definition to them as well.

This view has liberated me with agency after I went deep on this question and came up empty handed.

emrehan··on Apple rejected my dictation app for using the accessibility API
As someone that have tried a few of these apps, I really like this one. I dictated this one just now with ghost pepper. Thanks Matt and thanks orliesaurus for sharing it here!
emrehan··on ChatGPT Atlas
"Browser memories" claim to be "private", but the learn more link is broken. Shows the care given by OpenAI to privacy.
emrehan··on Long-term exposure to outdoor air pollution linked to increased risk of dementia
It’s not exercise, but NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis).
emrehan··on Tin Can – The landline, reinvented for kids
FCC has rules for calling 911, and many state statutes reinforce or extend FCC rules.

Tin Can is probably not bound by these rules, but it looks like a phone and works like a phone. In an emergency where seconds matter, it better not fail anyone.

Enabling 911 calls for all could not only save lives, but also save the company from lawsuits.

emrehan··on Spending Too Much Money on a Coding Agent
LLMs can read documentations for a language and use it as well as human engineers.

"given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content"

emrehan··on 270GB of source code from The New York Times leaked to 4Chan
I don’t think this could hury NYT in any way except bringing questions on data safety concerns.

They would have better open sourced their code in the first place.

emrehan··on Show HN: HackerNews but for research papers
What iamwil says is “one niche topic”, and why he says it is:

Such social media platforms need a small niche community to get started.

I think such a platform would be most useful for AI papers. If I were in your shoes, I’d pivot to targeting AI papers only and allocate 90% of my time on community building.

emrehan··on Sam and Greg's response to OpenAI Safety researcher claims
Some facts:

* This is a response to Jan’s claims: https://x.com/janleike/status/1791498174659715494

* There’s nothing concrete on AI alignment in the response.

* We don’t know when AI alignment could be developed.

* AI ethics / AI bias are necessary, but different concerns than AI alignment.

* We don’t know when existential-risk posing AI could be developed.

* There’s some risk of human extinction due to development of x-risk posing AI before AI alignment.

* OpenAI is at the frontier of AI development, which risks human extinction, without allocating sufficient resources to AI alignment.

I am uneasy with subscribing to ChatGPT…

emrehan··on Bruno: Fast and Git-friendly open-source API client (Postman alternative)
I created a cli postman test runner 8 years ago due to the pains involved in API testing: https://github.com/hantuzun/jetman

It seems like the API QA developer tooling has still room for disruption.

emrehan··on Voyager 2 is back online after eight months of radio silence
Carl Sagan mentions this possibility in Pale Blue Dot, concluding that such a mission's budget could be better utilized for other projects. For the following reasons:

1) Voyagers have turned off most of their instruments due to their diminishing power sources

2) Voyagers are moving away with speeds that are hard to match by even contemporary launches thanks to their gravitational assist trajectories.
