emptyfile··on Nearly all of the Western USA is in drought and it's not even summer yet
Is this a joke comment? Or is this really what the average American thinks?
emptyfile··on Among Europe’s Ex-Royals
>they went by “Prince”

Just reinforced my opinion that nobility in modern Europe is a bad joke.

If you ever find yourself in company of these self-described nobles, leave.

emptyfile··on Managing mental health while running a startup
>Not necessarily. I started my businesses in a shed in my parent's garden and got in to £20k of credit card debt.

>That's not really privilege, I put everything I (didn't have) on the line!

Incredibly lacking in awareness... btw 20k GPB is more then 24 average salaries in my EU country.

emptyfile··on Ask HN: What’s a good laptop for software development at around $2k?
>I don't think a lot of developers are buying macs due to marketing.

I've never seen a developer with a macbook in my country. The idea sounds absurd.

Unless you need Final Cut or whatever, Apple is considered a status brand in many parts of the world.

emptyfile··on Framework Laptop Mainboard
ha ha... what? how is it even legal for goods without invoice to enter the EU?
emptyfile··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
Just a different kind of strongman political fantasy.
emptyfile··on “Can it run Doom” will never be the same, thanks to new ray-tracing mod
>4. I hate how this looks and wouldn't play it except as a curiosity

What on earth makes you think Doom with raytracing is anything other then a curiosity? It would be shocking if it turned out to be anything else.

Are posters on this site really so dour to not recognize a bit of... hacking?

emptyfile··on Today Google is turning on tracking for many users that previously turned it off
The baloon project was actually one of the cool parts of Google. Notice the past tense.
emptyfile··on I have quit my job
>Lots of people make a living doing what they love/building a better world.

Really? America must be a great place then. Don't know anyone like that where I live. My doctor friends would be closest but they certainly don't have a good quality of life and their lives are quite dystopian.

emptyfile··on Tesla fired an employee after he posted driverless tech reviews on YouTube
Almost as if the mistakes were the important part of self-driving. Crazy huh.
emptyfile··on What the Russian Invasion Has Done to Ukraine
>ukraine can not win this war. no way

I guess the Ukranians disagree!

emptyfile··on What the Russian Invasion Has Done to Ukraine
Well I just don't understand. I mean you're literally undermining your own point.

The west was incredibly patient with Russia when they annexed Crimea and started a civil war in Ukraine(10 000 dead before this invasion), even as they blew up civilian passenger planes and committed terrorist poison attacks on foreign soil, poisoned their own politicians, built up their police state.

Putin explicitly said he was not going to invade Ukraine.

Why on earth would anyone believe a word out of this mouth after this invasion? How is negotiating in good faith with such a regime rational?

Intelligent discussion? That was supposed to come BEFORE the invasion, the only thing that matters now is to kick Russians out of Ukraine.

The genie of war is out of the bottle. The Russian people have blood oh their hands.

emptyfile··on What the Russian Invasion Has Done to Ukraine
>Russia has 4 clear demands. Why not just give it to them?

Well apparently most Ukraninans would rather die then live their lives under Putin's boot or indeed together with Russians who think its OK to invade other countries and murder people who oppose them.

But I believe you when you express puzzlement, this confusion seem to run all the way to the boss.

emptyfile··on Accused of cheating, marathon runner Frank Meza's life fell apart (2019)
He was literally supposed to run with an observer(because he's a cheater and can't be trusted) and he didn't, several times. How is that not cheating?

>In 2015 the L.A. Marathon must have noticed something fishy because officials asked him to run with an observer in the future. But when he returned in 2017, he ran alone, the observer idea apparently forgotten. He also ran solo in 2018 and 2019.

>So Murphy and the LetsRun crew grumbled when the L.A. Marathon announced in early June that it would not disqualify Meza from the 2019 race. >Instead, officials would ask him—again—to run with an observer next time around. “This is the best solution for all,” they told Murphy.

They're literally begging the guy to stop cheating so they don't have to ban him, and the guys does a world record. It's beyond ridiculous.

Instead of admitting it, he kills himself. I'm sorry, the whole story is tragic, but obviously this guy's problems went far beyond evil posters on letsrun, as awful as that site is.

emptyfile··on Accused of cheating, marathon runner Frank Meza's life fell apart (2019)
Well I just don't get your comment. Did you read the article at all?

>I'm pretty sure only online cheating detectives pay much attention to unusually low marathon times

It would be a world record in his age group if the LA marathon was a proper IAAF course. When people started getting suspicious his name and picture came out on the cover of the Los Angeles Times.

>specially if the person doesn't actively seek to promote themself

maybe next time cheat a few minutes slower then the world record! ridiculous!

emptyfile··on Accused of cheating, marathon runner Frank Meza's life fell apart (2019)
He was literally disqualified multiple times from races before that including a lifetime ban from a marathon he cheated at...

then he went to LA marathon where he wasn't banned, but had to run with an observer, and still ran without an observer to set the world record in his age group...

Did posters just stopped reading articles on HN?

emptyfile··on Accused of cheating, marathon runner Frank Meza's life fell apart (2019)
Right. People have had their lives and reputations blown up for all sorts of reasons, meanwhile this guy cheated to run

>the fastest marathon ever recorded for someone in his age group of 70 to 74

A bit ridiculous then to say people were attacking him for no reason, or his daughter not understanding why anyone cared. Dude was literally claiming to be the world marathon champion in his age group while cheating for years.

emptyfile··on Facebook loses users for the first time

In what way? It seems like something between vine an instagram.

emptyfile··on Facebook loses users for the first time
Its a lot worse then Facebook, there isn't even any text.

A hybrid of Vine and Instagram designed to make you stare into your screen with the smallest of interactions.

I really appreciate comments like this, makes me much more aware how stupid HN news posters are, a much needed reminder.

100% agree with you, and I don't want anything resembling confrontation when I'm buying souvenirs on vacation.

Couldn't care less if its rude or polite or whatever.

Go ahead and haggle if its fun for you.

emptyfile··on Agatha Christie could afford a maid and a nanny but not a car
In countries like that I just don't buy anything. Life is too short for haggling.
