employee8000··on Uber said to use “sophisticated” software to defraud drivers, passengers
No this doesn't happen. Some people may think that Uber charges the rider a different rate than the driver receives but it isn't the case.

A driver I had was sure this happened and asked me that on a fairly expensive trip (I think it was around $80).

I told him this didn't happen and I gave him my personal phone number and the amount of fare I was charged. I told him to check his daily numbers and if he didn't see this charge then to call me immediately. He never did.

employee8000··on [dead]
Thank you for this. I would have naively accepted the article. Family members suffer from AD so this is particularly interesting for me. How can they pervert the nature of the findings so drastically?
employee8000··on iTunes built, and then broke, my meticulous music-listening system
iTunes is the single worst piece of software I'm still forced to use. I would pay $100 for a better piece of software but Apple has their walled "garden". And they have billions but can't hire PMs and engineers that can build a better piece of software. So fuck them.

Anyone foolish enough to build a music listening system on top of them unfortunately deserves whatever they get. I don't have much sympathy.

employee8000··on Uber is charging passengers a $10 cancellation fee even when the driver cancels
It's not a scam. Iirc when the driver cancels they have the option of not charging the customer, or charging the customer. It was the driver who decided to charge the customer. But when the driver cancels the ride it affects their metrics so they can't do it all the time. I imagine if they keep charging customers they will get kicked off the platform.
employee8000··on Man jailed indefinitely for refusing to decrypt hard drives loses appeal
After 18 months in jail, can't the accused legitimately say that he forgot his password? I don't know if I would remember a relatively complex password if I were stuck in s jail cell for 18 months with no computer or ability to type it in every few days.
employee8000··on DeepMind in “very early stage” talks with National Grid to reduce UK energy use
They will reduce energy usage by 10% and then raise prices because they aren't making enough money. It's happened in Canada with Ontario hydro, and in California with water.
employee8000··on Ask HN: Anybody who left IT?
Why did you bounce through a series of startups?
employee8000··on Uber is forcing drivers in Seattle to listen to anti-union propaganda
This is bullshit. There is unlimited miles and they can return the car whenever they want. There's nothing predatory about it. I've had Uber drivers who bemoan the fact that they bought their own car instead of getting the lease.
employee8000··on How Uber could end up as Silicon Valley's most spectacular crash
This is a ridiculous statement. Would you prefer I don't announce myself as an Uber employee when talking about Uber?
employee8000··on Uber's 'hustle-oriented' culture becomes a black mark on employees' résumés
Rooting out assholes in interviews is even harder and less reliable than evaluating programmers with whiteboard interviews. The SVP from Google passed an extensive due diligence check, and some of the high performer assholes that got fired hid themselves almost perfectly. Hopefully this environment is over at this point but I'm readying my resume just in case.
employee8000··on Uber's 'hustle-oriented' culture becomes a black mark on employees' résumés
I'm being contacted around 3 times a day for the last couple of weeks from a laundry list of companies so I don't think the article is true. Not all orgs at uber have/had a bad culture and the engineering teams are fantastic. Many people love working at Uber, but clearly something needs to change, and they are, for the better.
employee8000··on How Uber could end up as Silicon Valley's most spectacular crash
As an Uber employee, yes we are going through a rough patch and we are doing a lot of bloodletting right now internally, but as a company I think we will emerge much better and much more impassioned. If you saw the numbers we see, you wouldn't be so quick to predict our death. And no, I'm not going to leak anything, go ask NYT who seems to have their own personal leak, whom I hope gets caught and fired.

In terms of self-driving cars I'm not holding my breath. I think that's a decade away at least, the only reason why Uber cares is because if we don't have a foothold in that race, it's an existential problem for us. But all it will take is one terrible self-driving car tragedy to push back all research by 20 years due. I really hope something like that never happens but with all these players doing self-driving cars who can tell what will happen in the future.

employee8000··on A deep dive into why Wi-Fi kind of sucks
If it's a mess then as a consumer they're doing a great job hiding it from me. I have 20 devices connected to my wifi and everything is running particularly smoothly. I did get frustrated at my 802.11n 4 years ago and dropped $250 for the best ac wifi router on the market and have had no complaints since then. Sure it could be more efficient from a technical standpoint but that's not something I'm interested in and I'm happy at how seamless things are for me right now.
employee8000··on Uber has a law firm investigating me – Susan Fowler
That number was a lie btw.
employee8000··on Uber has a law firm investigating me – Susan Fowler
That's your prerogative. I choose to believe this was a misunderstanding on the part of Susan. Of course, if there is further evidence then I would love to hear it and make a new decision then.
employee8000··on Uber has a law firm investigating me – Susan Fowler
Because she is unfortunately incorrect. Just because I support her doesn't mean I can't be factually objective. It sounds like some sort of miscommunication.

Here is the official statement from Uber:

"The law firm Perkins Coie is looking into the specific allegations raised by Susan. They will report into Eric Holder, who is responsible for the overall investigation into Uber's workplace practices. To be clear: they are investigating Susan's claims, not Susan personally."

In an email from one of our lawyers, she specifically mentions that Uber has been in constant contact with Susan's lawyers so this was a surprise. And that Uber of course doesn't hold Susan to blame for anything.

employee8000··on Uber has a law firm investigating me – Susan Fowler
Uber employee here. I don't believe Uber would be stupid enough to investigate or disparage Susan. She is and should be untouchable. In my opinion Uber should offer her a full apology, their thanks, and "make it right" financially.

I don't think you understand the level of support Susan has at Uber. And the level of anger that her blog post erupted within Uber towards management. She has every employees' support. And thanks to her, massive changes in culture and management are going to happen. She singlehandedly changed Uber more than anyone in management would or could.

So if Uber were investigating Susan, there would be massive revolt against management, guaranteed. It would be immediate.

employee8000··on San Francisco university lays off IT workers, jobs head to India
It's this type of thinking that plays right into the hands of a Trump. His message is "America First" and it obviously resonated with enough people.
employee8000··on Uber Investigating Sexual Harassment Claims by Ex-Employee
Pariah is a perfectly valid and non-offensive word.
employee8000··on Uber C.E.O. To Leave Trump Advisory Council After Criticism

employee8000··on Standing up for what's right
As an Uber employee, I'm morbidly curious as to how HN will spin this into something negative. :)

For the record, I'm super proud of working at Uber because those on the outside never see the things we do for our drivers. This is a big one and I'm really proud. You just don't see this on the news that often because who knows.

I've said this before but the Uber of the last 2 years is not the same Uber from 2013/2014. As a company it has grown up and matured and realizes the responsibilities it has to its drivers, riders and cities.

employee8000··on Carbon monoxide poisoning from 3D laser printer may have killed Berkeley couple
Not the point. OP (it could be a woman) said that it takes weeks to unbind when in fact the half life is 74 mins.
employee8000··on Carbon monoxide poisoning from 3D laser printer may have killed Berkeley couple
No it's within hours. A simple google search will show you that.
employee8000··on Cruise Shows Off Level 4 Skills in SF, Passing Uber and Maybe Waymo
Very cool. But am I mistaken that they didn't attempt to go through a 4-way stop with massive pedestrians, like in PacHeights or Marina? I would be curious to see how they fared with the obnoxious drivers skipping their turn as well as the constant flow of pedestrians.

I'm also curious how it would react to going up Mason and California, where there's a traffic light at the top of a steep hill. Last time I had to physically pull myself up via the steering wheel to see anything, and as a seasoned driver I was a bit worried.

employee8000··on Efforts to Prolong My Husband’s Life Cost Him an Easy Death
Tragic. My friend in Canada says 80% of medical spending is in the last 20% of the lives of Canadians.

I read a similar story a few years ago, probably from HN, about a woman whose husband suffered a severe stroke. While he was in the hospital, the doctors told her he needed a pacemaker. Without thinking she said "of course" but she unknowing extended his life by 10 years because of this error. And he only got worse to the point where she wished he would die, which made her feel even more guilty. A truly horrible situation that no one should be put in, but we are because we have the technology and the misbegotten notion that everyone should live, even st the expense of life.

employee8000··on ISIS Drone Dropping Bomblet on Abrams Tank Is a Sign of What’s to Come
This seems like propaganda but I can't figure out if it's US propaganda or ISIS propaganda.
employee8000··on ISIS Drone Dropping Bomblet on Abrams Tank Is a Sign of What’s to Come
Jam the transmission signals?
employee8000··on Should gifted students go to a separate school?
This is unadulterated bullshit. The idea that we are supposed to teach each other is science fiction that you just made up.

We need smart people in society so that we can advance. They are the leaders that will help move the needle. If we burden our best and brightest young people with "educating" their peers then we as a society lose out. The gifted children should be free to learn at their own pace so that as they get older they have developed expertise that the regular people will never achieve.

This isn't communist Russia. We don't gain anything by throttling the motivation of gifted kids except making the regular kids feel better about themselves.

employee8000··on Oracle laying off hundreds in Santa Clara
I heard the same story directly from a Facebook recruiter as well.
employee8000··on Uber Hires Former Google Search Chief Amit Singhal as SVP of Engineering
Uber employee here, and I can tell you that almost everyone I know loves working here.

I apologize for the behavior of the random douchebag employee you encountered, I would hope most of us wouldn't act like that.
