I'm a beardless unix greybeard who loves dabbling in new computer languages.

I'm also fascinated in the psychology of belief.

Philosophically a skeptic, but I don't attend their services :-)

emmelaich··on EVs are depreciating faster than gas-powered cars
You are spot on. New car EV prices are dropping and tech is advancing.

EVs inherently depreciate less; they're simpler, few moving parts. The motor is sealed. Batteries are lasting longer than expected.

So 'depreciate' in the title is misleading. It may be technically true in that they lose resale value, but they are definitely not less road-worthy than a similarly aged combustion vehicle.

I would absolutely buy a second hand Tesla, they're great value. Probably other EVs too.

I'd just like to mention Roy Calne, transplant pioneer, humanist, skeptic. Only died last year, at 93.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Calne

> Sir Roy Yorke Calne FRS FRCS (30 December 1930 – 6 January 2024) was a British surgeon and pioneer in organ transplantation. He was part of the team that performed the first liver transplantation operation in Europe in 1968, the world's first liver, heart and lung transplantation in 1987, the first intestinal transplant in the UK in 1992 and the first successful combined stomach, intestine, pancreas, liver and kidney cluster transplantation in 1994.

emmelaich··on Electricity can heal wounds three times as fast (2023)
It's probably the stopping of other treatments that fixed it. I had bad eczema and psoriasis. It stopped (after weeks) after I stopped treating it with random creams and taking cool showers. I later found out that the culprit was lidocaine.

Also copper is biocidal, so maybe there's something there.

I really wonder how much rare earth element deposits are not found for want of looking. Not much reason to source them yourselves if the country (China) uses them for products that you're going to buy.

According to this map, China has vastly more. But is there something special about China/Myanmar geologically? I guess being downstream of the Himalayas is something.

It's a bit pathetic that European countries do not have the tech capacity to compete equally without having to do stuff like this.

(Not saying China is playing fair btw, just saying there's a vast amount of underused intellectual resources in Europe.)

Could have been worse --

Ramazan Çalçoban sent his estranged wife Emine the text message:
    Zaten sen sıkışınca konuyu değiştiriyorsun.
"Anyhow, whenever you can't answer an argument, you change the subject."

Unfortunately, what she thought he wrote was:
    Zaten sen sikişınce konuyu değiştiriyorsun.
"Anyhow, whenever they are fucking you, you change the subject."
This led to a fight in which the woman was stabbed and died and the man committed suicide in prison.

emmelaich··on How hard do you have to hit a chicken to cook it? (2020)
It was an epiphany for me watching a blacksmith at work. After the piece of metal is pulled from the furnace, it can be kept red hot if hit hard and often enough.

If I had bothered to think I would have known this theoretically = being a physics and mecheng guy.
