I'm a beardless unix greybeard who loves dabbling in new computer languages.

I'm also fascinated in the psychology of belief.

Philosophically a skeptic, but I don't attend their services :-)

And yet I'm sure that greed is pretty much a constant. The opportunities to exploit that greed may change.
emmelaich··on Programming Still Sucks
That's disputed. Progress was uneven and lagged a little, but by many standards (height, mortality) quality of life increased for many from the start of the industrial revolution.

The difference is intent. It will deceive people whether or not the author's intent is deception.

Don't know where I read that, but it seems apropos.

emmelaich··on Tar Files Created on macOS Display Errors When Extracting on Linux (2024)
Tar on linux will. e.g. selinux attrs and other xattrs.

Open question, is it worth attempting to main these semantics between mac and linux.

OTOH, If you want the information contained in those files, where else would you save it?
emmelaich··on How fast is a macOS VM, and how small could it be?
Nah, just locally on my macair.

TBF, I only got to the point that using device=mps_device didn't fail. I used Sonoma at the time and the image for the vm was ghcr.io/cirruslabs/macos-sequoia-xcode:16.2-beta-3. Python 3.12, as well, because torch didn't work with later versions.

   import torch
   mps_device = torch.device("mps")
   print('device is', mps_device)
   x = torch.ones(1, device=mps_device)
   print(x)

I got torch to run in a Cirruslabs Tart instance.
emmelaich··on Recovering files from beyond the grave using PhotoRec
Photorec is great and has improved over the years; it did way better in 2010s than it had done in the early 2000s. (I have a dd image of a corrupt disk of baby photos.)

This reminds me to try it again.

emmelaich··on Bugs Rust won't catch
Rather, I think that using a functional safe language tricks people into thinking that the data it deals with is stateless. Whereas many many things change in operating systems all the time.

Until we have a filesystem that can present a snapshot, everything has to checked all the time.

i.e. we need an API which gives input -> good result or failure. Not input -> good result or failure or error.

emmelaich··on Why I Write (1946)
About the "worst" thing I've read about Orwell was that he was a relentless moralist and didn't know how to have fun. Sorta the opposite of P.G.Wodehouse.

Which ... I'm OK with. I've read most of his work too. Of course 1984 and Animal Farm are the best but Road to Wigan Pier and Down and Out in Paris and London are good too.

(I also love Wodehouse)

Not sure that Linus would actually agree with Linus' law. So it's a bad name. Call it the ESR observation or something else.

Separately, I'd add Rust's API design principles, though it's more of a adjunct with things in common. https://gist.github.com/mjball/9cd028ac793ae8b351df1379f1e72...

> "the right of the people peaceably to assemble"

"Peaceably" is important. If you think the pro-Palestinian protests on campus are peaceful, try wearing a yarmulke and walking anywhere near them. Or anywhere on many campuses, on any day, protest on-going or not.
