I've been moving around AI and frontier tech for a decade. Starting as PhD Dropout when AI isn't hot, I become a nomad traveling to many different countries to upgrade skills and knowledge. This includes San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Montreal, Paris, Berlin, Lausanne, Singapore, Jakarta, etc. When the pandemic happens, I become a human writer and catch early move of LLMs as a user.

I was an early user of chatGPT and met Sam Altman. Also many more LLMs like Claude, Gemini, etc.

Now, I am working on GenAI safety and security, i.e. Agent, Agentic AI, LLMs, etc. Check out my latest post and more: https://securedgenai.substack.com/p/review-agent-security

Outside work, I recycle garbage and plant trees. I also enjoy traveling and learn from the local every where I visit.

emmap21··on Q1 and Q2, 2024 Update: A Comprehensive Guide for GenAI Safety and Security
Welcome to this curated list of tools, frameworks, and best practices for securing and responsibly using generative AI.
emmap21··on Facebook-owned sites were down
There is a global outage this morning starting from 8:00 AM. This list has Google, Tiktok, Zoom, Slack and of course FB products and services.
emmap21··on Facebook-owned sites were down
Not only facebook, but also Google, Zoom, Telegram, Youtube and many more internet service/ product/ providers from 8:00 AM today. This is more like internet outage.
emmap21··on Fortran Web Framework
I was shocked to see this language popped up as a web framework. Before this, it was something belonged to a computational science lab with a BIG project in 1990s.
emmap21··on Ask HN: The Future of AI Copilots
Better tools do not make people be better. Just have a task done faster. The best hacker/ dev I know can code without an IDE. They only need a plain text editor and can tell how wrong the terminal is without Google.
emmap21··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Thank you for your answer.
emmap21··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Hi Peter, I am thinking of applying EB1A, however still wondering about the competitiveness of this VISA and IEPP, e.g. processing time, fee, acceptance rate, etc. Would you mind providing some of your thought? Thank you.

emmap21··on What is the Fourth Dimension? (1884)
You might want to look at Simplex to describe better and more rigorously. Simplex is the most basic structure to describe a space in n-dimension.

0-simplex: a point.

1-simplex: a segment (points and lines)

2-simplex: a rectangle (points, lines, and surfaces)

3-simplex: a tedrahedron (points, lines, surface and a 3D space that most of human can comprehend visually)

4-simplex: everything above and the whole combination of these element in algebra.

This is how mathematician and physicists solve problems. Time is a separate element in our equations that why we often talk space-time, not just space

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simplex

emmap21··on What is the Fourth Dimension? (1884)
If we assume the world is a cube, I would think of 4D as a several projections of 3D cubes in another 3D cube. For higher dimension, I find myself in algebraic topology. This is really tortuous to think of these concepts.
emmap21··on A Hacker Mindset
PG also has an article about this -- tl;dr. it is about pure creativity, imagination and experiments.
emmap21··on The problem with ‘follow your dream’
What works for me is diversifying experience. Life is a box of chocolate, you will never know what you are gonna get.
emmap21··on Ask HN: Avoid burn out from doing sideproject on weekends
Just do what you love. If it does not make you feel happy, do something else. You are at the exploratory phase - don't commit too early if you are not truly deeply interested in those. It's indeed a key to win a game.
emmap21··on Ask HN: Build a test app for evaluation in Remote Job test is rising SCAM?
You might be too early to those companies. In your case, I would learn about people first before doing anything. During a pandemic, everything just becomes hard for everybody so if you don't really know people (at least in-person contact or a strong ref) - should not invest too much time.
emmap21··on China bans cryptocurrency from banks, payment systems
Heard this news yesterday on social media. I thought this would be a possibility but turns out it has been done. The same time with the blood bath day of Crypto.
emmap21··on Ask HN: Why are you pro/anti Bitcoin?
Crypto in general and Bitcoin specifically are super volatile or other words, unstable. To many people, this means many different things.

For me, I am anti-crypto:

* Seen many bad examples of abuse, e.g. MLMs, scams, laundering, cyber crimes, etc.

* Bad impression with early users. Most are driven by greed with vanity more than productivity or strong values.

* Wasting so much energy for "copy and paste" with no real use case. This hurts environment a lot.

emmap21··on Ask HN: Book recommendations based on a book's citations
You can try Goodreads and follow some authors to learn about their taste.
emmap21··on Is Burnout a Depressive Condition? A Meta-Analytic and Bifactor Analytic Study
Just read this paper via a social share. It is spread like a bushfire between psychologists and psychiatrists.
emmap21··on Introverts can make great leaders (2018)
I agree - at least from my a bag of data points I have. Unfortunately, the common perception is extroverts. This happens when people just read news and consume media without real experience.
emmap21··on The Suez Canal will be widened
Just watch a movie and wonder if Ever Given is big enough to ship Kong to Antarctica.
emmap21··on Ask HN: Where is a nice place to host which is not AWS / GCP types
Yes, there is a lot - A few options are

* Heroku -> Best choice for backend dev;

* Vercel -> Best choice for React/ NextJS dev;

* Digital Ocean -> Best for all small product;

* Netlify -> Best for Jamstack;

* Github -> Best choice for Portfolio of Dev.

Many domain hosting also has a web hosting service. Their offers are lucrative compared to AWS/ GCP/ Azure.

emmap21··on Facebook moderator: ‘Every day was a nightmare’
They does have an army of people to moderate content, however the fact that it is too overwhelming. Honestly, this really hurts mental health in a long term to run this job.
emmap21··on WeWork CEO Says Least Engaged Employees Enjoy Working from Home
Too bias - This statement is over-generalized and exaggerated. You can share observations, but to extract what is underlying - it needs a backup data. During a pandemic, most big tech let their employee work from home.

WFH means that you are able to get tasks done by yourself with lots of autonomy. IMHO

emmap21··on Ask HN: At a startup with high IPO potential but it sucks, should I stay?
It's a common startup problem. I have no doubt. Most of startup suck, honestly. However, there is a few reason why a few thrive. You might want to check:

* Why would you join a startup? Wealth? Opportunity? Or some deep meanings.

* Which stage is it? The earlier it is, the worsen a company is managed. In your case, a late stage company still in a turmoil is a huge question mark.

* For startups, it's always better with showcase than a promise. If I were you, I would take a reference that matched to the first bullet.

emmap21··on Ask HN: Best Sites to Procrastinate
Immersed in the physical world. However, it is not the best option now. You might want to write or play some thing new. Language, Music, Art, Math, etc. This used to work for me though I look very un-fancy on the internet.
emmap21··on Why Am I Still Embarrassed About Things That Happened 10 Years Ago?
This is what I learn from my experience. Think too much in the past -> Depression. Try too much to see in the future -> Anxiety. The best way is staying the present. Here try to practice breathing. It helps a lot.
