Being fed to pigs is actually one of the better outcome for food waste.
emj··on Why read Dostoevsky? A programmer's perspective
At least in Crime and punishment the names have a meaning. So you can look them up and see if it fits the characters. I just go by how the characters act, until have differentiated themselves enough I do not learn the names, a bit like real life.
emj··on Why read Dostoevsky? A programmer's perspective
I've had the same experience; and I see no one recommendation that will make someone appreciate literature. The argument I heard from a younger AI researcher was that books/stories are just a collection of tropes that get reused over and over. For me it's easier to just recommend Dostojevsky, or perhaps a couple of dystopian classics. Even then not everyone will understand how literature is not just about information which become a story.

For me Crime and Punishment was perhaps a bit painful for me as a teenager I remember entering the same state of mind as the main character Raskolnikov from reading it, but it was also a good capstone to connect the feeling from books by Boje, Strindberg and Chekhov.

emj··on Homemade Heat Pump Manifesto (2009)
It is explained like this in the thread.

> if you have a large compressor, you pay more for it with every revolution the trick is to figure the maximum BTUs or watts you will need, and design a little bit smaller. Plan to use a supplimental energy source to fill in during extreme conditions.

Worth noting the AC_Hacker paid $25 for the AC he used for this.

emj··on OpenStreetMap Shortest Route Finder
That and the height graph makes it really easy to find places in rivers that are going to be a bit rough. It was very easy to use this tool to get a GPX of a river.
emj··on Falsehoods programmers believe about email
That is not true, but what RFC are you refering to? SMTP is well over forty years old there has been lots of them in that time.
emj··on 1960s Bike Buses Used to Transport Cyclists Under the Thames
I interpreted you as saying "nothing can be done to let kids cycle here" that is what I take umbrage to, there are lots of things that can be done on smaller roads to make the more accesible. My point was that where I lived it was not possible to build a cycle track, but there was small things that could be done; in attitudes and infrastructure. I've seen so many impossible things solved.

The easy path is to continue scaring kids away from roads making them a barrier rather than something for transport.

Sorry no change, but on smaller maps it has better speed. So obviously a CPU issue or something.
emj··on 1960s Bike Buses Used to Transport Cyclists Under the Thames
You are free to your opinion but it's not fact.

You say "it's impossible because X", but what is usually the issue is that cars just take over all the space and make public transport, walking and cycling impossible. I could live in the country side without a car thanks to the pandemic, I do understand that most people make choices in their life that make that harder, but those are choices made by people and infrastructure planners. They are not fixed truths.

There is so much to disect here and I do not think we can reach a common conclusion because everything is a special case. For reference I lived 9 km to the primary school, bus and store, 60 km to the nearest hospital and train station, 4 km to the nearest daily bus. I understand that it might feel strange to build bicycle infrastructure in such an environment. Luckily for us it was perfectly possible to live there and have my children ride their bicycles to school, but this was only possible because a lot of people alreadt walked on these roads, and it was quickly known in the community that my children rode there in the mornings, even if they were the only ones doing it.

Yes you need to change the infrastructure even in the country side to enable walking and cyclists, it does NOT have to be 10km of cycle track, but it might have to be that.

emj··on Show HN: Rocket Drone, a lunar lander type game for the web
I ran this full screen and let other people play. Some notes:

It's a really easy game if you have a slow computer, the physics has to be separated from the graphics.

Add a splash screen with the "Rocket drone" name when you die so it's easier to know what's being played.

The instructions for using P and Q was not obvious for three people who tried it. (non native speakers and children). N=5

Fun as a fast game or as a slow game.

emj··on Ask HN: Why did smartphones become a single point of failure?
> only sends codes to the primary mail

One should be able to login with multiple methods. E.g. with 2FA you should always be able to connect two devices, and if you choose to login with a third party like Google/Facebook you should be able to add a password for login as well.

emj··on Electronics are built with death dates. Let’s not keep them a secret
The USB-C connector is a lot easier to break than a normal power connector, it's also pretty fidgety to get right when you fix the connection on the laptop side. The fixability can be done better than normal charging ports, I've done a USB-C daughter board swap in about 2 hours of total time (research, ordering, mounting). The normal way though is doing soldering surface mounted USB-C connectors which is not something I like to do.
emj··on Solar canopies on parking lots
Isn't that the point: if 3% is used for urban development then another 0.5% is going to be very noticeable in cities.
emj··on Solar canopies on parking lots
Looking at Rutger campus, used as an example in the article, https://osm.org/go/ZctEjpw05- up to 50% of the area seems to be for car infrastructure. That's a lot of area.
emj··on Pirate Library Mirror: Preserving 7TB of books (that are not in Libgen)
I've tried to do lossy compression of epubs with some lines of bash scripts; i.e. removing the images and fonts that were not needed. Many epubs could be downsized to a third of their size, but then I found a book that needed the supplied fonts and gave up. When doing lossy compressions can not have those kind of bugs.

What I also found was that many of the images in the epubs were already unuseable and nothing like their counter parts in phsyical books.

emj··on Lidl’s parent company launches cloud unit to offer ‘Made in Germany’ AWS rival
We pay more, what we pay for is making it easily available to a lot more people than before. That is actually cheap for what you get, but if you do not get anything extra besides a text dump it's expensive
emj··on Lidl’s parent company launches cloud unit to offer ‘Made in Germany’ AWS rival
When we are talking about cloud and digital services there is nothing protectionist about it. The amount of powers all countries spy agencies have over cloud platforms is scary.
emj··on Ask HN: Favourite open source game?
XbattleAI did a TCP connection version, I can't remember if it was good enough. See. https://github.com/robertjschulz/xbattleai

The closed source javascript game https://generals.io is a good simplification of XBattle, I've seen one OSS server reimplementation of it.

If you can find the code for Europa I'm interested, I think it was released as OSS but I couldn't find it when looking around.

emj··on Ancient civilisation under eastern Turkey estimated to be 11k-13k years old
I feel a bit hopefull because globally we really did try to get Covid right, most people tried in their own ways. That goes for all parts of the political spectrum. That of course led to conflicts and group think, which is the part that will destroy us. The issue with global warming is not the temprature, it's how we will all be affected and how we act because of that. History says we can not handle external stress, civilizations fall easily. Yes we are global now, that will mean a global civilisation destroying.
emj··on Nature has enormous emotional and cognitive benefits on people
How was that calculated; populations and areas of cities are often calculated in very different ways. You have to show these things on a map and describe why you choose what area and how the population number was calculated. Just "what is a park" differs between cities, even what is a parking space is different. E.g. cars needs a lot of room around them on motorways, that areas is not always counted as "motorway" but can be counted as "green space" in some papers.

I have not seen ANY good examples of comparisions between cities, but I know these problems comes up alot when we discuss cities here on HN.

emj··on HTML event handler attributes: down the rabbit hole
Our site has mainly non tech people on it, a large amount of those have browsers that inject js/css into our HTML, I would say that is something user hostile. When we tested CSP with report-only I had to stop counting at 20 different malwares, the analysis was that even though CSP helps, those malware authors would just find another way. Thousands of our users were affected.

Do you think HTTPS is user hostile as well, not being able to read all the network traffic generated on my machines feels off for me. In the end I guess HTTPS is good for the user and so is CSP.

Looks nice very cool flying over that terrain. I wonder if it would be better with higher resolution I'm guessing if the graphics is better you get the uncanny valley problem.

emj··on Seriously, Stop Using RSA (2019)
Thank you for that self analyzing! I got lost on that part, so will now stop writing ping 127.1 just to save four bytes. I've always felt that people learnt things by seeing that, but now I know I'm too lazy to bother learning myself.
emj··on Show HN: A plain-text file format for todos and check lists
IMHO: Workflow, Text input fields and File formats are like APIs; if there is a way to abuse, hidden or public, then someone will use that in their process (https://xkcd.com/1172/). So adhering to Org mode in your own parser will mean a lot of work anyway. There will always be some subtle point that make your format incompatible with a tool you want to use.
emj··on WFH Policies – Based on anecdotal community feedback
In Stockholm a 70km distance by train is about 1h20m, 8.5 USD for two trips in one day or 100 USD per month. On the old commuter trains that makes about 18 stops.
emj··on Evaluation of science advice during the Covid-19 pandemic in Sweden
I've never met a group of people who did not see themselves as special, this view is common in all countries I've lived in. I wonder if someone has tried to measure it objectively.
emj··on Evaluation of science advice during the Covid-19 pandemic in Sweden
That is a pretty extreme interpretation of the paper. That view is also not helpfull if you want to talk about the regional problems around Sweden, it has been mentioned in other comments here. The paper is just bringing up a discussion we have had since june 2020 in Sweden, I sure do not think we will not stop discussing it.
emj··on Evaluation of science advice during the Covid-19 pandemic in Sweden
The problem was that there were cases were consent was not given and of healthy 70 year olds having to fight for ventilators at least in the beginning. From what I understood a lot changed when people realized what was happening in June 2020, the paper is pretty vague about this it talks mainly about the first half of 2020.
emj··on Evaluation of science advice during the Covid-19 pandemic in Sweden
This is not Sweden. While a lot of it rings true; like the strange mix of fierce indivudalism and collectivism in Sweden, and how we really did mess upp early elder care. I only have anecdata about elder care; my relative just now died in an one such home from brain damage + malnutrition the amount of care, happines and grit that was done to make her eat was heart warming. The same place hade been hit very hard by Covid, which ment they now had extreme proceedures in place that limited our visiting possibilities, that ment they had zero Covid cases during the peaks in 2021.

I think most of the care homes learnt after the first wave, at least I hope that my experience was representive.
