emj··on Breaking Down OnlyFans' Economics
> Hesiod was right, his culture no longer exists. ;-)

Hesoid lived when ancient greece got started what followed was 6 centuries of Greek dominance in the mediterranean region. :-)

emj··on Breaking Down OnlyFans' Economics
Maybe a parasocial with the crowd then. Small venues are better for social life but bigger venues create more revenue. So we get less social life.

People build connections whatever they do, we have had phone sex for a long time. Now you need a camera and take some clothes off to do it. It is obvious that the people who manage to earn a lot streaming are mass producing content. There are ones who strive for a social connection and the creators who give that are never going to be big earners. Same as small venues.

emj··on Los Angeles is in a 4-year sprint to deliver a car-free 2028 Olympics
There is a book "La Centrale" by Elisabeth Filhol that describes the nuclear industry in France, it was a horrifying read. It is indeed not a fun industry to work in.

EDIT: seems it is available in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish but can't find it in english. That is kind of sad.

emj··on Interval parsing grammars for file format parsing (2023)
Last time I tried to parse .docx it was full of opaque binary blobs, it might be a zip but parsing the data is like summoning arcane magic. It might have changed in the last decade, but considering the Microsoft has no incitement to make the situation better parsing it is always going to be a "fun" exercise.
emj··on Alexa is in millions of households and Amazon is losing billions
I wanted concrete examples, I see I could have been clearer on that point but I did not intend malice or to brag.

I memorize because of diabetes. You need to know how much sugar you eat so you do volume -> weight * carbs/weight * portion size to calculate how much insulin you are supposed to give for a meal. That is not because of cooking and having tried doing that with voice assistant several times I know it is hard to get correct numbers.

emj··on Alexa is in millions of households and Amazon is losing billions
I do not understand how a voice assistant help with this, it has never worked for me. Seems like pretty hard things to do on the fly with recipes.

Weight to volume conversions are rare here but sure I do those on the fly so I guess it makes sense, do you really do you guys really do it that often? If you do extensive conversions of recipes you will need to get the ratios correct as well it is just not something I see myself doing with a voice assistant.

emj··on Alexa is in millions of households and Amazon is losing billions
That is probably it, never would have occurred to me. When doing international recipes doing a translation/conversion is not always straight forward. I cook a lot and often it becomes a investigation into the ingredients and what to replace rather than a simple conversion of units. Not something Alexa does.
emj··on I mapped almost every USA traffic death in the 21st century
Because of how infrastructure is built you experience bicycles a lot closer and therefore they might feel more dangerous than cars. When you stop to think of it it is not strange, but when it comes to bicycles there is always someone who forget.
emj··on Alexa is in millions of households and Amazon is losing billions
How does one need unit conversion while cooking? Sometimes I need how many grams is 1 dl of flour/oats (60g/35g) but I memorized that the second time, maybe if you are doing larger portions.
emj··on I mapped almost every USA traffic death in the 21st century
Interestingly pedestrians accidents go down when bike paths were installed on streets in NYC. Bike paths are closer and have less protection for pedestrians than car lanes so it is interesting that bicycles make it so much safer to be a pedestrian.
emj··on Radxa X4 low-cost, credit card-sized Intel N100 SBC goes for $60 and up
To be compatible and be able to use all the Pi Hats would be nice but my point is that I am not sure a RP2040 can replace the Pi and be called "compatible". You can do a lot with an MC on the board that is true.
emj··on Radxa X4 low-cost, credit card-sized Intel N100 SBC goes for $60 and up
I am pretty sure RP2040 is not compatible with the Raspberry pi boards, so it will not be enough to replace Raspberry PI.
emj··on Radxa X4 low-cost, credit card-sized Intel N100 SBC goes for $60 and up
In the schematic on Radxas site[1] there is no connection between the RP2040 and the power circuit, I would love to be able to shutdown the Intel chip from the Raspberry Pi microchip. Seems far fetched that it would be hackable if this is not a feature, I'm guessing the power chips are a lot more complicated and undocumented than a RP2040.

emj··on Corcel – Use WordPress backend with Laravel or any PHP application
I am not a PHP developer, and our php code is all third party apps.

Do you have any write ups on PHP tooling? My feeling is that php tooling has a hard time handling stateless images, you often need to install plugins to php applications with a GUI with no good way to do it in a build process. Config of php applications is always an mix of php.ini and database config, often making monitoring a case of writing custom http requests and html parsing. I am not that happy with Java but there are many things it get right especially in tooling.

emj··on Unraveling the physics of knitting
It is physical and satisfying to work with fabric, I have met a lot of nice people while learning hand weaving.

I have not tried stitching but my experience mirrors that of the article, just "the simple things" with twill or satin can be a rabbit hole you need to limit yourself to understand them. There is a lack of easy to access models of how different thread interact with each other, just creating a simple pattern is more of an art form or knowledge which thread works best. If you talk with the people who works with it it becomes apparent why, there is a myriad of edge cases. There are some really cool physical 3D models, at least on in C/Python on github.

It is easy to see why it is expensive to do fully automated, one computer controlled actuator per pixel adds up in complexity and costs if you want to do 3d thread work.

emj··on Windows: A Software Engineering Odyssey
There are now many alternatives, looking at office culture today there is really no need for Windows anymore. Many even do their job a lot better with a tablet and a keyboard. The big problem is IT. Zealots that has to use Microsoft/Linux/MacOS/iOS/Android. I say this with decades of experience, different settings will always mean different choices usually it is not the best solution for the organization that wins.
emj··on How many EV charging stations does the US need to replace gas stations?
That argument can be made everywhere even with perfect public transport. It is usually about choices you have made. Of course in the US it is far too easy to become car dependent. If you wish it, it is most certainly possible but you have probably made some personal choices that makes it harder.

Car dependency is a choice. Even in Europe the norm of cars is strong.

emj··on Urban renewal left the U.S. too scared to build
If you use your railways for passenger trains it is quite common to reroute the railways around towns to get higher speeds. Which has drawbacks and advantages. As a tourist I do not like it.
emj··on Was the Stone Age the Wood Age?
Not all but many of small houses are wood and 50% of the Swedish population lives in these houses[1], some of the bigger houses are wood as well. Construction relies heavily on wood. This was not my experience in many other countries, even when there was wood in the vicinity. I think the readily availability of spruce and pine is one reason. It would be interesting to know statistics from Denmark because in the south of Sweden wood is that used as much.

You can see this in the tradition of constructing fences as well, if there is a lot of wood people use lots of it. In the south near Denmark the tradition is to use as little as possible.

emj··on Angle-grinder: Slice and dice logs on the command line
I've used plenty of java cli tools for batch processes that takes ages to run, having something launch fast or run interactively is a different story. No hate on java the jvm is just not that fast launching.
emj··on Show HN: tu – Convert natural language date/time to UTC
Using a linter is a good idea.

It's not command substitution but the contentes in $variables will be expanded and splitted so you need to quote them or the newlines will get lost.

  $ touch asdd
  $ foo=$(echo -e '\n\nboop\n*dd\n'); echo $foo "$foo"
  boop asdd

  boop
  *dd
Try create files with new lines and globbing in them, and forget to use quotes around filenames. Chaos ensues.
emj··on DNS over Wikipedia
I think it is great that we have yet another encylopedia, but the bar have to be set higher than Wikipedia to be a serious competition.

Bluntly and from experience starting a new encylopedia is hard so lets be honest that is mostly used by the far right which makes it a strange place for other people. My personal feeling is that having more stuff than Wikipedia is almost impossible in a fair way, even the more rigorous Wikidata is an almost impossible project. Discussing this is troublesome because complaining about the contents of an article is not the same as actually taking the time to write the article. Which is why it is also nice to have similarly licensed alternatives

emj··on Friends don't let friends export to CSV
That makes the delimiter "," which is ugly so someone is just going to use , instead and you are back to square one.
emj··on Why is the LinkedIn app almost half a gig?
Management might have been too interested in features to fix deep technical issues.

> I had conversations with that manager where I was told in literally so many words, ‘You’re too idealistic. You don’t care enough about the bottom line. You should change your values.’ And I was like, no, nope, that’s not how this is going to work, man. Uh, outside I did the politic.

emj··on VLC: App Stores Were a Mistake
I think we all understand why Google might have a need to sign the binaries themselves. The point is that if they are creating binaries it should be signed by Google using a key uploaded by me it is just unnecessary.
emj··on Fundamentals of Object Storage in Elixir
It is often used in swedish technical writing to separate and foreign word or an acronym from the plural so "VPS:es" in english is VPS:erna in swedish. I do not know if this is a swedish tradition, it most probably exists in Germany or the US. I've seen this use in Sweden for several decades.
emj··on VLC: App Stores Were a Mistake
> With Play App Signing, Google manages and protects your app's signing key for you and uses it to sign optimized, distribution APKs that are generated from your app bundles

There is no meaning of having a private signing key if is not private. Why does Google need me to upload a private key if they are then free to use it on their own?

emj··on Botanical gardens can cool city air by an average of 5°C
You are mistaking global for local, and 50 years is too late. I am positive I think some of us will survive.
emj··on 46% of Americans didn't read a book in 2023
I have a curated list of books from Gutenberg on my phone and read them when I have 20 min to spare. Works really well. Sure I also spend hours just reading every now and then, sure I do not read many books but a lot more than two per vacation.

I've actively come back to this way of reading books the last 15 years, the key is to make it easy to read books and not having any notifications.
