I live in the US now but I come from a third world country (Iran) where such atrocities are commonplace. And let me tell you. What is happening to Assange shows that when it matters, the intelligence community is above the law and not that different from those bizarre authoritarian regimes. It's just that their propaganda machine is just more successful at "spinning the stories" and making people believe Ed Snowden and Julian Assange are anything but heroes.
You are probably more educated on this, but I'm an Iranian and Iran was the only country so far that was banned from SWIFT. And it was a very very big deal. The banks could not deal with anywhere in the world and it become very difficult to send or receive money.
The EU tried to setup an alternative to SWIFT [0] so they could work with Iran but it didn't really work out.

And number of consumers. Want a big economy? You need a big population.
The problem, in my opinion, is how external entities treat science. Some examples:
* Media reporting low grade papers as "Science" which constantly contradict each other. "Scientists found out $something causes cancer", then a year after that "Scientists found out $thatsamething cures cancer
* Pseudo scientific drugs being sold for a health-and-beauty-obsessed general public with little to no effect
* Political think tanks funding flawed research to push their own agenda and heavily echoing those researches in their echelons for political gain
It seems that academia has become a foundation for other entities to cling on for profit, and now the it's the acamedia's reputation that has been shattered.
We wrote a celery-like library for Node[0] and RMQ has been rock solid.
Let's say fishysenders.com tries to fake an email on behalf of johnsmith@company.com (and thus, dmarc alignment fails)
Gmail would say "From: johnsmith@company.com via fishysenders.com"
Big providers like Gmail, Outlook, etc all have a scoring system for sender IP addresses and hostnames. The longer your IP and hostname behaves properly, the more credit it will get.
I imagine starting a new mail server with new ip addresses/hostnames may be more difficult.

So there are these devices on Amazon that move the mouse for you so the inactivity algorithm breaks and you're always online and active!
As a very hard working person I sometimes feel like an idiot.
Last time I met this person was 2 years ago. He was obsessed with Trump. Back then I thought in 10-15 years he is gonna be into many conspiracy theories but this time i met him he sounded completely insane.
And I hate that for this guy everyone is saying its because he is rich. There is plenty of dumb conspiracies that people in the US are believing en masse across all classes and ages. Its sad that we can just sit around and do nothing.
How much is mathematical notation contributing to the idea that "math is hard" and preventing students to think of math as lego bricks in which you can use a set of functions to build newer functions?
I was utterly disappointed. The fan would turn on for no good reason and make noised. My 4th gen never did that. And the performance was not that different from my 4th gen.
So, I returned it after a while. Got myself a Macbook Air M1. The hardware is brilliant. But to my taste, Mac OS is nowhere near close to how comfortable I was with my Linux/KDE setup. So now I'm backing marcan's effort to get Linux running on this device, but that doesn't seen to be close. Thus, I'm thinking of giving the Lenovo T14 Gen2 a try. As of now every moment I use the Air is pain.
They way I see it is that it was a case of something that wasn't working, then replaced with something that was working.
I don't know what your metrics about "good" or "bad" are but eventually they got a solution that covered their use cases and the solution was good enough for stakeholders and that is "good".
If you are trying to hire, expecting every junior dev to know all this stuff means you'll skip a lot of candidates who can contribute a lot to your business.
They shouldn't be trusted with writing things from scratch. But if your codebase is mature enough, getting db connections, making endpoints atomic and stuff like that already should have a convention so your junior engineer wouldn't have to do it on their own.
When Facebook thinks of monetizing Whats App as one of their major/only assets, it needs to find a business plan that'd allow billions of dollars.
They were wrong. They should've gone after TikTok by acquiring it. Just like they did with Instagram.
Maybe within the tech circles and HN crowd. But outside these circles nobody even feels like something is off.
Facebook has _nothing_ for the future.
* Blue app is already on it's death bed.
* Instagram is already seeing a massive decline in quality and engagement as its getting close to the end of its lifecycle.
* They managed to survive Snapchat, but I think that made them think Instagram is too big to fail. Thus, they didn't go after TikTok. It was a mistake.
* What's App is not monetizable.
* Oculus is not becoming the next PS4/Xbox like they hoped.
Facebook is usually being compared to the likes of Apple, Google and Amazon. It's nothing compared to them. It's not even gonna be able to do a Microsoft/IBM pivot as it has no monetizable developer ecosystem.
I personally think they should've acquired TikTok last year when TikTok was looking to be acquired by Microsoft. They probably would've extended their survival for another 10-ish years (lifecycle of a social media)
