emilis_info··on William Gibson says the future is right here, right now
What if it is not the things that are changing so fast, but our ability to reflect and think long-term that has nearly vanished?
emilis_info··on Poll: Do you have Silverlight installed?
A couple of options are missing: "don't know" and "what is Silverlight"?
emilis_info··on Promote JS
I use MDC reference rather often and their loooong response times and occasional "Service Unavailable" messages annoy me very much.

Every time I have to use it I am thinking of making a mirror of it.

emilis_info··on The Hardware Hacker Manifesto
You know, I think this is a wrong way to do this.

If you bought it, you own it. Period. Just do whatever you want.

It doesn't matter what the "commercial dude" wants. He's acting silly. You should laugh to his face. Literally or metaphoricly. In public. If he gets angrier it just shows other people what an asshole he is.

emilis_info··on Rate my startup: Make stupid simple websites for work, play and life.
I am very impressed.

Do you have any plans to make it possible to use an orb for blogging?

One very simple way to turn a wiki into a blog is to add shortcut for "todays page". The shortcut should open page "/blog/yyyy/mm/dd" for editing. It is a killer feature for me in Zim desktop wiki (http://zim-wiki.org/).

You will probably have to add some sort of pages-listing-child-pages, but it shouldn't be very hard. I know, because I have tried it myself for a wiki I have been developing ;-)

emilis_info··on Ask HN: An academic web app idea, anyone interested?
I am develoing an opensource webapp with similar requirements (noticing relevant parliament/government news in Lithuania).

It can index more than RSS feeds (you know, government websites ;-)) and uses Lucene/Solr for searching documents.

Our website: http://kaveikiavaldzia.lt/ Source code: http://github.com/emilis/PolicyFeed

I would gladly answer any questions.

emilis_info··on The bliss of an 18-month, paid, Swedish paternity leave.
That's nothing. I was on 2 year paid paternity leave in Lithuania :-)

First year - 100%, second year - 85%.

Won't do that again :-)

emilis_info··on Unity: a lightweight netbook interface for Ubuntu
Yes, the top of that screenshot looks messy. If they are moving in this direction, they could also get rid of the top panel. Or at least redesign it.

I have been working in a similar desktop on my wide-screen laptop for nearly a year now. I feel much more productive. It took me some time and skills to configure it, but the tools are already available. I use Openbox+Tint2+Conky and some other lightweight utilities. Also Tree Style Tab extension for Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5890 Since they are talking about getting users to the browser faster, they may as well tweak the browser to work better in this environment.

It is more natural when window/tab hierarchy flows from left to right, than from left and then from top.

emilis_info··on Secrets of the hated corporate intranet
Thank you for this link. Brigtened my day. I was an intranet webmaster at a bank for some time...
emilis_info··on The Single Page Interface Manifesto
A case when this will still break bookmarking:

- user with JS enabled opens the website and navigates to some inner page

- user with JS copies the url for the inner page (e.g. http://example.org/#foo/bar)

- user with JS sends this url to a friend

- a friend with JS disabled opens the url and does not get the inner page.

Also -- what if a search engine "bookmarks" the page and a user with JS opens it? Do you:

a) redirect him from example.org/foo/bar to exmple.org/#foo/bar or...

b) do you leave the url untouched and wait until the user bookmarks another page as example.org/foo/bar#foo/baz ?

a) -- you waste processing power on visitors from search engines.

b) -- you waste processing power on the next opening of the bookmark. Also this looks like a bug waiting to happen.

Disclosure: I browse with JS turned off (Firefox NoScript extension) and websites that rely on JavaScript when a static page would do annoy me.

emilis_info··on Merry Christmas everyone
Su šventom Kalėdom!
emilis_info··on Ask HN: What are the best technologies you've worked with this year?
Helma NG (Server-side JavaScript).

Easy to get started, fast, stable, the community is helpful and it is easy to read their source code if you get stuck somewhere.

emilis_info··on CommonJS effort sets JavaScript on path for world domination
The CommonJS module system is really a step forward.

For the last two months I've been developing a webapp on Helma NG and I like it very much. Parts of the framework fit together nicely. The community on IRC is very helpful and provides answers in the rare cases where source code and documentations is not enough.

I also want to praise the project developers for their code quality -- even though I use a version from git I haven't had a single problem with frequent updating and re-building it.

emilis_info··on The Tao of Programming
If it were not for laughter, there would be no Tao. ;-)
emilis_info··on The illusion of gender
Yay! A taboo!
emilis_info··on The illusion of gender
Why change "sex" into "gender" in title?

The original article title and the scientific article title have the word "sex".

Seriously, WTF? I am reminded of "gender mainstreaming" conspiracy theories some of my friends have. Is word "sex" a taboo?

emilis_info··on The Most Important Writing Lesson I Ever Learned
I think, this is really the most important writing lesson:

emilis_info··on [dead]
1. It wasn't the newspaper that reduced(?) Turing to "The Gay Codebraker". It was the petition campaign before it -- the campaign made him special among other gay (and non-gay) people who were discriminated.

2. If you think, that word "gay" is somehow humiliating -- invent a new euphemism instead of it, for political correctness sake!

One thought that got stuck in my mind after reading the article: use Mono and you risk being sued like TomTom was sued for using VFAT.
emilis_info··on Zawodny: Database Abstraction Layers Must Die (at least for PHP)
Based on my experience, I do not agree with the author.

DB Abstraction layer has helped me reuse the same libraries on different DB engines more than once.

I had one occurance when I needed to install my new webapp in a hurry (for demonstration purposes) and couldn't arrange for a database with the server administrator fast. Well... I just changed "mysql" to "sqlite" in my DB config, fixed a few problems with SQL CREATE statements and it worked.

On a side note I also agree with the "PHP is the best templating languge" idea. I just use a template class for it that has a similar API to Smarty.

So yes, I use abstraction layers in both cases. I guess that is more convenient because I do not work on any one web application for too long and I need to carry my libraries and knowledge painlessly from place to place. If I had only one application to build and support at one location... who knows, maybe I would even write php extensions for it in C.

emilis_info··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Are there any plugins for Diakonos?
emilis_info··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
I am developing a web wiki with a WYSIWYG user interface. It has an in-place editor instead of forms and textareas (stole some ideas from Zim desktop wiki).

I am also creating a new programming language for the wiki - a mixture of many ideas from lisp, python and other. The language can be expressed by HTML lists.

Working from home in Vilnius, Lithuania. Currently on child-care vacation paid by the state.

I will opensource my work, but haven't found out yet how to make it support my further development after my vacation ends and I have to return to my bank job.

If you have ideas how to make some money from yet another wiki/cms -- I would be very thankful for them.

emilis_info··on Has North Korea Started the First Cyber War?
I understand that North Korean government has a motive, but do they have enough technological ability to orchestrate such an attack? A country full of starving people and with one website opened a few years ago? I highly doubt it.

On the other hand I doubt any of the other few possible states (China or Russia) would turn to such demonstration of force against US unless they had something to gain from it.

What's left then? Some crazy group like 4chan or some errorists? They would be shouting "we did it" before you even heard the news about the attacks.

Oh well... back to square two.
