emh68··on Be likeable or get fired
People definitely misuse PRs though, and while it's common for engineers to go "well that's their problem, I'M logically correct!", I think that's the wrong approach.

One very common thing that I've seen is opening a PR just to double-check the way the PR looks on github. Ideally they mark these PRs with "WIP" either in the title or as a tag. It's implied that those PRs aren't ready for review.

If you weren't expecting critiques of your code while you were in the middle of developing it (perhaps you have placeholder code all over the place), it could be jarring and distracting.

This goes against the purpose of PRs, but at some point you have to put engineering culture flexibility above strict letter-of-the-law guidelines.

If someone didn't pick up on this phenomenon, I'd gently inform them. There would be no need for getting upset... unless they continued doing it in spite of the commonly agreed-upon behavior of the team.

emh68··on Java is Pass-by-Value
It’s a VM language and therefore “pass by value” and “pass by reference” don’t make sense in this context. But people love to subdivide everything into two groups so have at it, who am I to rain on your party.
emh68··on Be likeable or get fired
‘at which point someone complained I was reviewing his PR before it was ready for review (it had WIP in the title)... but I'd always thought that you just don't make a PR before you want someone to have a look at it!! Why would you do that?!’

Oh boy. Concrete thinking is a serious issue.

emh68··on Weirdstuff Warehouse is closed
I was lucky enough to get to go to weirdstuff a few times over the past year, and it’s sad to see it go. I have witnessed the fall of surplus stores over the last decade or so. It seems like they lost touch with what hobbyists want. You’d see piles of corporate IP phones, which no one would find interesting. Piles of rackmount servers for way too much. Piles of hard drives from 1988 that almost certainly won’t hold data. It was bleak. Meanwhile, hobbyist electronics is thriving. Arduinos are flying off the shelves at Amazon.
emh68··on NixOS 18.03 Released
Some people enjoy that. Just look at Arch Linux.
emh68··on Justice Dept. Revives Push to Mandate a Way to Unlock Phones
Why would the government push an backdoor that would expose their own citizens to more hacking? Almost seems like they’re just trying to look tough on crime but won’t actually do it.
emh68··on Vim Clutch – A hardware pedal for improved text editing (2012)
This is cool and all, but coming from the emacs world, all I want is a keyboard with four meta keys. Ctrl/alt/command/option maybe. All in a row to the left/right of the spacebar. That would be ideal.
emh68··on Vulkan is coming to macOS and iOS, but no thanks to Apple
I did RTFA, but you were saying the OpenGL dream has been dead for a long time, which I took to mean pre-2014 ;)

Uou have convinced me that Metal might not be so bad... at least is all the consoles have custom APIs then it’s not as unusual as I thought.

emh68··on Vulkan is coming to macOS and iOS, but no thanks to Apple
Apple doesn’t count, they just recently moved to Metal from standard OpenGL. Do consoles use something custom? Not OpenGL?
emh68··on Vulkan is coming to macOS and iOS, but no thanks to Apple
It’ll be interesting to see if this helps the lack of games on Mac in the long run.
emh68··on Vulkan is coming to macOS and iOS, but no thanks to Apple
What do you mean by “the OpenGL dream died”? It seems to me that we were slowly moving toward a unified API across all operating systems, then Apple did what they always do and invented their own closed API.
emh68··on Standing desks 'increase pain' and slow down mental ability, study suggests
Dear VP of engineering, as a programmer, I sometimes need to stare off into space to visualize a complex system. <my boss> should have explained this, but didn’t, which I think is a failure to do their job.
emh68··on Tiny quad-core system-on-module for makers and hardware startups
I like how they threw “makers” (or “pro makers”, whatever that means, on the actual page) into the title. Uhhh... Yeah I’m going to spend $50 and then probably at least another $50-$100 for the breakout board, which I’ll need as a (pro|) maker because they use high-density FMC connectors on the actual module itself... At this price point and level of integration difficulty why not just use a (much more standard and better-documented) Pi Compute Module?
emh68··on It’s illegal to have an inaccessible website in Norway
Laws affecting websites, such as accessibility laws and GDPR-like privacy laws need to be made very carefully, and I feel like they haven't been. They cover every website, from the largest Fortune 500 website to the smallest Little Johnny's HTML Homework Assignment page. I worry that future selective enforcement of these laws could stifle smaller websites that someone disagrees with. "That's a nice website you have criticizing <government> or <corporation>, would be a shame if we brought up all the laws you aren't 100% in compliance with..."
emh68··on The Beauty of the COBOL Programming Language
I remember distinctly being a kid, finding a book on programming in a thrift store. It was all in COBOL. Previously I had only seen snippets of C++ and... perl I think. Anyway, I saw the COBOL syntax, all-caps, everything spaced out evenly, and it delighted me immensely. It felt structural, weighty, substantial. I think that if the javascript I write today looked as impressive to outsiders as COBOL looked to me then, I'd be showing off my work to a lot more friends & family.
emh68··on Did Congress Really Expect Us to Whittle Our Own Personal Jailbreaking Tools?
Seems like the system is working as intended. The Copyright Office is powerless or unwilling to stand up to the copyright holders, and as a result they can only give us hollow concessions like "You can jailbreak this, but you can't buy tools from someone else to do so".
emh68··on Visa confirms Coinbase wasn’t at fault for overcharging users
If Visa weren’t at fault they would put out a statement about it and then probably sue. Why are there so many posts asking this same question? Feels concerted
emh68··on Visa confirms Coinbase wasn’t at fault for overcharging users
If you look at what actually happened, it’s pretty obvious that it was Visa... they were trying to retroactively change how they applied cash advance fees for the past month, and something went wrong.
emh68··on Chip Aging Accelerates
I’ve read about tin whiskers extensively, and the consensus seems to be that while conformal coatings will stop tin whiskers from falling accross two leads, they won’t stop a whisker that’s growing from one lead toward another - they will just pierce right through it.
emh68··on Air Force Strike Takes Out SpaceX's Floating GovSat Booster
Elon was probably having a beer with some Air Force brass and they were like “hey you really want to pay for disposal of that thing? Or... I’m sure some of our boys would love to use that for target practice.”
emh68··on Ad campaign runs cryptocurrency miners while unwitting users watch videos
Wow, that's it?

Googling around a bit, it seems that Google's attempt to include everything under the sun into your YouTube Red subscription is to blame...

They could just give you ad-free youtube. But instead, they want YTR to include their YTR-only premium content, and also they want to throw in Google Music... all of that requires decyphering copyright laws and potentially registering as a royalties collector (IANAL). Typical Google behavior, an inflexible all-or-nothing approach.

emh68··on Ad campaign runs cryptocurrency miners while unwitting users watch videos
YouTube Red?
emh68··on Your company can increase voter turnout: make Election Day a company holiday
It’s fine - as long as I can write in “Darth Vader”.
emh68··on Mill CPU is Immune to Spectre, Meltdown [pdf]
Is there an FPGA implementation of a Mill CPU, or even a scaled-down version (32 bits maybe)?
emh68··on Firefox bullshit removal
What I don’t understand is why are there no paid browsers? I’d pay $xx(x?) for a browser where I’m the customer, not the product. Every open-source browser is either awful and outdated, or is beholden to outside interests, or internal monetization strategy.
emh68··on An Experimental Course on Operating Systems
Rust + OS design seems like the sweet spot for teaching future systems programmers. Nice idea!
emh68··on Dropbox Files Confidentially for U.S. IPO
Name too close to dropbox, and Dropbox became a well-known name first.
emh68··on California lawmakers have tried for 50 years to fix the state’s housing crisis
And for the betterment of society, we should take away some of that power. It's clearly being abused.
emh68··on LisaOS to be open-sourced and donated to Computer History Museum
I'm looking forward to the Lisa hardware clones this will spawn...
emh68··on Amazon's Fake Review Problem
Clothing item. I received a really cheap item by the same manufacturer, with a tag jammed into it identifying it as the higher-priced item.
