emersonrsantos··on Phrack Magazine (1985-2016)
Caution - very addictive, and glorious obsolete tech. Also full of mystery.

First time I've read one was 1995 on some BBS.

emersonrsantos··on Ask HN: YouTube down?
I wonder if there's any link to the Brazilian elections, the candidates are using YouTube heavily and it's prime time there.
emersonrsantos··on Paul Allen has died
Very Sad. Paul Allen, you will be missed.
emersonrsantos··on The Murgia Hack System
It can be an interesting evolution of Unix "everything is a file". This potentially simplifies everything - threading, signals, pipes, asyncronous I/O.

I have the impression that Microsoft tried to do everything is a device in post-NT systems but I can't remember the details.

emersonrsantos··on Brave – A private, secure and fast browser
There’s adaway for Android (needs root) that downloads, merges and replace /etc/hosts with your favorite hosts blacklists, working system wide and not consuming extra battery: https://adaway.org
emersonrsantos··on People Like You More Than You Know
People too busy trying to look perfect, or thinking how to fix their problems, are too busy to think and praise your ego.
emersonrsantos··on Google CA Root Inclusion Request
It's also seamless if you happen to use webmin, the open source "cpanel".
emersonrsantos··on Preventing Muscle Loss as We Age
For me it’s bodyweight fitness (which is olympic gymnastics for newbies), following the recommended routine from the reddit /r/bodyweightfitness community, plus exercise bike every day.

Used to do weight training, the chance of injury becomes higher as you age. Also, as you add muscle mass and more training, you will need much more time to recover. Also always watch for overtraining symptoms.

Our body is the most precious thing we will ever encounter, or possess in life.

emersonrsantos··on Creating a Fibonacci Generator in Assembly
In Forth language would be:

  : fib 2dup + ;
2dup word duplicates n and n-1 elements and put it on the top of the stack.

+ word takes n and n-1 elements from the stack and sum them. The result goes on top of the stack.

Just start with 1 and 1 at the top of stack.

emersonrsantos··on The Mellotron In Action [video]
Some people say Mellotron's 1963 product was a complete rip-off from Harry Chamberlin and his instrument (the Chamberlin) created in 1949. The instruments are identical.

emersonrsantos··on Turing Tumble – Build Marble-Powered Computers
More refined version of the classic Digi-Comp II and actually turing-complete, according to the creators.

With its 2 Hz speed per “instruction” (ramps, gears) it’s not super slow. I would love to see a bigger version and a simulator without board limits.

Edit: no one yet proved that the toy is Turing complete, but the creators believe it is because you can build NAND gates.

emersonrsantos··on A military technique for falling asleep in two minutes
The basis of this technique are progressive muscle relaxation plus visual concentration.

I learned this using techniques you can do to have lucid dreams. When your concentration is not the best one in the day, the result is sleep.

emersonrsantos··on Learning BASIC Like It's 1983
There’s this naive concept that these 8 bit microcomputers programming were based in BASIC. The speed of these Z80 chips was 1-3 MHz.

Almost all games and programs in the 8-bit world were written in Assembly. The BASIC interpreter was just used as the bootloader to load and run these programs, BASIC was in fact the shell interface and the toy language, but the assembly programs essentially sold the computers.

If you wanted to do something in these computers, it would have to involve assembly because of BASIC slowness. And there were newbie books about assembly language, assembly libraries, tons of assembly compilers and debugging utilities available anywhere.

emersonrsantos··on IncludeOS – A minimal, resource efficient unikernel for cloud services
Can I use gdb to debug my applications?
emersonrsantos··on Office Life Is Destroying Your Butt
Well, standing cause varicose veins - because a close relative just needed surgery because of standing too long - and she doesn't have the healthiest relationship with her butt, so what gives? Are standing desks really healthy or not?

emersonrsantos··on 24-core CPU and I can’t type an email
“I work on Chrome, on Windows”

...

  chrome_child.dll (stack base)
  KernelBase.dll!VirtualAlloc
  ntoskrnl.exe!MiCommitVadCfgBits
  ntoskrnl.exe!MiPopulateCfgBitMap
  ntoskrnl.exe!ExAcquirePushLockExclusiveEx
  ntoskrnl.exe!KeWaitForSingleObject (stack leaf)
So don’t use a proprietary kernel that performs poorly?
emersonrsantos··on Cubans cheer as internet goes nationwide for a day
I'm not sure Internet will free the Cuban people, but it's certainly a step in freedom direction.

It is impossible to find a dozen people for whom the word freedom means the same thing, in the same way.

I just hope they achieve freedom in their lives.

emersonrsantos··on Replacing Linux with a Database System
z/TPF [1], is basically a database system OS that runs almost all VISA, AMEX, Citibank (authorizations); Holiday Inn, Amtrak, Mariott, Air Canada, Delta, Japan Airlines, Travelport, Trenitalia (reservations). But it's IBM proprietary and runs only on IBM licensed hardware.

It's always in my programming dreams to be involved in building a database OS with I/O capabilities since I worked with TPF and MUMPS.

emersonrsantos··on You can't tell people anything (2004)
This applies so much for relationships.
emersonrsantos··on Ask HN: ZOS/Cobol Development in Canada?
> Honestly, if you apply for any of those jobs with even a passing familiarity of COBOL you're pretty much guaranteed.

This is interesting. How the companies there react to the fact that one doesn't have an academic degree despite IBM devops knowledge?

emersonrsantos··on Mainframe on the Macbook
> Hopefully the author doesn't go down the rat hole of setting up Hercules with a 1970's era version of MVS operating system, and tries to learn enough JCL to execute the compiler. That's truly a waste of time.

Why? Cobol, JCL, RPG, ..., run on modern IBM MVS (OS/390, z/OS), unmodified. If someone seeks to learn IBM mainframe systems internals and don't have access to modern software, Hercules-390 and MVS 3.8 it's a viable option to get started as an application or systems programmer.

IBM has its own turnkey system called z/PDT so you can run a mainframe on your laptop, something that Hercules-390 can do too.

emersonrsantos··on Don’t buy the MacBook Pros even on sale, in my opinion
MacBook Pro from late 2013 is just as difficult to repair, only cheaper because they don’t have touch bar. I can’t replace the keys at home (expensive parts, so many things can go wrong), so it’s waiting for pickup to go to a company to stay there.

I’ll probably sell it and replace with another Lenovo, which is one of my machines since 2011 and it’s only two philips screws away to receive maintenance and upgrades.

emersonrsantos··on Apple open-sources FoundationDB
Caché is more oriented towards vertical scaling, big monolithic servers, where FoundationDB is more towards horizontal scaling.

Also, the obvious difference is that Caché is closed source and prohibitively expensive.

FiS is only FOSS on selected platforms (Linux x86, OpenVMS Alpha), and proprietary on all other platforms.

emersonrsantos··on I miss Windows Phone
Windows Phone was a beautiful platform for consumers and developers. What Samsung did for Android, Nokia Lumia line undid it for MS. Fautly hardware, devices with one major OS version lifespan, shipped late to the market.

Nokia is the company that got stuck in 2005.

emersonrsantos··on Half of European flights delayed due to system failure
For those curious, Eurocontrol MUAC (Maastricht Upper Area Control Center) migrated to 50 virtual SUSE Linux Enterprise servers running under IBM z/VM hypervisor on a IBM z196 mainframe system in 2013.
emersonrsantos··on Introduction to the Mumps Language (2017) [pdf]
One company have a object-oriented database programmed under Mumps that is so backwards compatible to the point it can interface to RS232 dumb terminals and run utilites and code from the 70's. Used very much by governments and hospitals, it's one of the most insecure platforms I've ever worked.

Bonus - perfectly valid Mumps code
