emersonrsantos··on The Myth of the ThinkPad
I have a 2020 Lenovo Legion and boy, those things last. I can easily open it to clean it (did it last month), add/remove memory or storage without specialized tools or software. All that I need is built into the bios (like disable battery for service, disable hybrid Intel Graphics/Nvidia to use just the GPU, disable secure boot), and the bios is still getting updates. I understand the price tag, especially for enterprise because every big manufacturer does this.
emersonrsantos··on Is Northern Virginia still the least reliable AWS region?
Glad to use us-west-2 for reasons.
emersonrsantos··on Using FreeBSD to make self-hosting fun again
I have used FreeBSD back in 1999 to provide hosting services for a company that I have worked. Web server, DNS, POP/SMTP, FTP and squid cache proxy .it was used also internally for DHCP and NAT routing (since we had only one public IP). Just configured it like an appliance and never had a problem, even uptime was counted in months (exception was package and kernel upgrades).
emersonrsantos··on Are retrocomputers best left on or off?
So better to turn it on sometimes, without power cycling so much, to keep the electrolyte fluids wet, to extend the equipment life. Let it rot and dry and it will.
emersonrsantos··on Are retrocomputers best left on or off?
That's true, but in many cases, it's not the integrated circuits (ICs) that fail, because they tend to be quite reliable. It's more often the capacitors, resistors, storage devices and power supply components that degrade over time. Capacitors, in particular, can fail due to heat, aging, or voltage surges, which can lead to failure in devices even if the ICs are still in good condition. Power sources can also fail due to wear on these exact components.
emersonrsantos··on Are retrocomputers best left on or off?
Old components are still (and will be) manufactured, since so many old tech depends on it, like refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, microwave ovens, ...
emersonrsantos··on Brainfuck Enterprise Solutions
I miss this from the Internet early times. The Church of the SubGenius, IOCCC, Phrack Magazine, The Tao of Programming, ...
emersonrsantos··on Malaysia started mandating ISPs to redirect DNS queries to local servers

emersonrsantos··on Does Fine-Tuning LLMs on New Knowledge Encourage Hallucinations?
Ice age
emersonrsantos··on Ask HN: Interesting TUIs (text user interfaces), maybe forgotten ones?
IBM ISPF suite is gorgeous.
emersonrsantos··on Stop Doing Cloud
Happy to onboard a startup like this and have them spend thousands of $ on me just on consulting on how to migrate to AWS/GCP/Azure without downtime.
emersonrsantos··on Show HN: 4-bit Brick Game emulator in ASCII graphics
I added Mac OS compatibility: https://github.com/ilyakurdyukov/brickgame-4bit/pull/1
emersonrsantos··on You can't stop the business, or why rewrites fail
We tried that in the company I worked, project was abandoned 1 year later. Improvements and better practices were incorportated into the old codebase which is still scaling today.
emersonrsantos··on Ask HN: Fed up with Evernote; what are your recommendations?
Anything that supports Markdown. I use just a repository hosted on GitHub that has a history and that I can access anywhere.

If you need privacy, just use git-crypt.

emersonrsantos··on Deploying Kubernetes with Ansible
Does the author ever heard about using loops in Ansible? with_dict can save you around 20-30 lines of code.
emersonrsantos··on The organ as a wind instrument
There's a software that I used to emulate a pipe organ (and also harpsichords). I used it for years and it has a library with a lot of historical organs around the world: https://www.hauptwerk.com, as far as I know this is the only commercially supported PC/Mac software dedicated to this.
emersonrsantos··on AWS Nuke – delete all resources associated with AWS account
Namespaces could solve all of that. Why AWS haven't added that yet? I understand that they rarely change the service, but c'mon, we're in 2022.
emersonrsantos··on Anonymous has taken down the FSB website
It's all fun and games until they start to DDoS your API, DNS, network.
emersonrsantos··on My thirty years of dodging repetitive work with automation tools
You must be kidding, for 30k/year I can hire my own human python developer.
emersonrsantos··on Coinbase’s philosophy on account removal and content moderation
They could have a philosophy of serving their customers.

If you are an international customer you have ZERO support despite being able to sign up, make transfers and trading.

I don't recommend Coinbase to anyone outside the US.

emersonrsantos··on Show HN: I made a little digital circuit simulator that operates on PNGs
That's awesome, thanks for sharing! Will play with it in the weekend.
emersonrsantos··on U.S. surgeons transplant pig heart into human patient
I don't get it that dogs/cats/horses/etc are sentient but pigs/cows/chicken and other animals are not.
emersonrsantos··on Make the internet yours again with an instant mesh network
> You can travel the globe, and your IP will follow you: onto a plane, from continent to continent, wherever. Yggdrasil will find you.

Is there a privacy option?

emersonrsantos··on Ask HN: How did you move on from past experiences?
You dissolve the memory of it, also known as forgetting. It's not real, it was a mental form created by your mind. It cease to exist if you stop to feed it.

If you are overwhelmed by your mind, try to use it less and instead use your emotion, use your body (walk, exercise, ...).

emersonrsantos··on An NFT without a blockchain
It hurts a lot when the shit hits the fan and you notice things that were clear all the time and you just didn't notice it before because you didn't want it to be true.
emersonrsantos··on There's been a big rise in monitoring workers at home
Look out for companies using Hubstaff or similar tools.
emersonrsantos··on “Coding is basically just ifs and for loops.”
This is funny, but it's like saying "Math is basically pluses and minuses".

I see coding as playing with hardware without having to use soldering iron.

emersonrsantos··on DESQview/X: Forgotten mid-1990s OS from the future
Could never play with this because it was a paid product and the company didn't have any offers on my country.
emersonrsantos··on Asmrepl: REPL for x86 Assembly Language
It's a modern DOS debug.com
