emdowling··on Apple Increases Prices of Macs in U.K. By 20 Percent
Not included is the price for the UAE: AED 11,099.00 = 3022.11 USD.

No tax in UAE and Dubai is such a transit hub that its a pretty good saving if you are going to be passing through soon.

emdowling··on Nintendo Switch – New Video Game System [video]
This is exactly what I'm concerned about. It seems ridiculous. Not sure if it's enough to be a deal breaker, but it seems so backwards especially as they control the whole platform.
emdowling··on Nintendo Switch – New Video Game System [video]
It is so reassuring to see Nintendo create a modern gaming machine that doesn't try to be a living room hub or an iPad competitor. Going entirely by the video alone, every single design decision has been made with a clear focus on gaming. The simple docking action for transitioning it to the TV, the versatility and portability of the controllers, the reasonable size, etc all combine to make this (again, judging entirely from the video) a focused, confident release that finally embraces the changing way people play games.

Besides an original Gameboy (which I loved), I've never owned a Nintendo console. After seeing this trailer, it is an instant buy for me in March.

The only thing I want to know more about is the online store. From what I understand, Nintendo's eStore has a lot of shortcomings in a lot of weird areas. I hope they address those. I have an Xbox One and about 25 games, all of which were purchased digitally. I'm not sure I could go back to physical versions of games.

emdowling··on Radar – A new set of integrated tools to help prevent fraud
Charities are a huge fraud target too. Often, stolen credit cards get run against donation portals for charities like the Red Cross to see if the still work and are valid (as the charges can be quite small).

This costs the charities a lot of money in chargebacks and man power in dealing with it. Stripe's offerings here could prove invaluable in this scenario.

emdowling··on All Tesla Cars Being Produced Now Have Full Self-Driving Hardware
I 100% agree that more dangerous drivers should pay a higher premium, but there needs to be a fair, equal, transparent way to determine what dangerous is. Between law enforcement agencies, speed cameras and red light cameras, we have established well-tested legal frameworks which determine whether a driver is dangerous or not.

We we don't have are any legal or moral frameworks for passive, always-on methods of observation. Until we do, we shouldn't be letting private companies arbitrarily determine whether a driver is dangerous or not.

emdowling··on Measuring how bad Twitter is
This (and the original post[0]) sum up how I feel about Twitter. Every few months (since joining in 2009), I jump on and attempt to curate my feed to only get stuff I care about. I stick around for a few weeks, then get overwhelmed by the deluge. So I constantly curate and trim and it all becomes very tiresome.

I want Twitter to be a feed of news and opinions from organisations and people I care about, but it is far too hard to jump in and see how a conversation started or evolved. It is far too hard to filter out the noise.

Honestly, my RSS feeds give me everything I need and they've been going strong for over 10 years. Sprinkle in a bit of Apple News to fill in the blanks and Twitter quickly finds itself in the "too hard" basket.

The financial state of Twitter highlighted by this article is mind-blowing. How on earth have costs crept up so much with no meaningful improvement in product? As a very astute tech-savvy person, I cannot see anything that Twitter has done in years that have made it better. That stands in stark contrast to Facebook.

I'm sad about this because Twitter has been such an integral part of the modern internet, in democratising information. It's role in the Arab Spring alone was world-changing. It's a pity it hasn't been able to harness this.

emdowling··on Releasing Serverless Framework V.1, and Fundraising
Realm, most recently featured on HN here[0], is a good example of this. Open source, widely adopted base product, with optional consultancy and now a full-featured platform for enterprises that need/want it.

emdowling··on Writing for Half-Life
Games don't have a minimum "bullets per minute" quota they need to fill to be considered a shooter. Sometimes I go on a melee spree in Halo, does that make it "not a shooter"?

SS2 lets you use projectile weapons as your preferred way of disposing of enemies. In my mind, if you choose that path, it could be described as a shooter. That isn't all it is, but it is one word that describes a particular way you can choose to play the game.

Side note: SS2 is probably my favourite game so I certainly don't mean to "degrade" it by implying it is "just" a shooter.

emdowling··on Writing for Half-Life
It is if you want it to be.
emdowling··on Realm Mobile Platform – Realtime Sync Plus Fully Open Source Database
Very legitimate concern. I use the Realm database in production and it has proven to be a very good decision. Huge advantage over Parse is that the database is open source. If something did happen, the open source community would probably be enough to carry it. If not, it is just a local persistence store, so not hugely difficult to swap out for something else.

This new mobile platform is not (as far as I can tell) open source and has completely unknown pricing beyond the free tier. I certainly wouldn't go near it, even though it looks great.

emdowling··on IBM says Swift is ready for the enterprise
This is my point - I use multiple storyboards to break up the app and use storyboard references where appropriate. But loading up individual storyboards, waiting for them to render (which takes far longer now with @IBDesignable), etc is such a drain in productivity.
emdowling··on IBM says Swift is ready for the enterprise
I would agree with this. The biggest issue with Swift right now is Xcode. Multiple times each day, syntax highlighting and code completion will break, even though the code is perfectly valid. The lack of refactor support after three Xcode releases and major versions of Swift is inexcusable.

Using storyboards is super frustrating due to the load times. It seems no one at Apple tests with more than one storyboard in a project.

I love going back to Ruby dev because VS Code is just such a joy to work in compared with Xcode. Xcode really struggles on my top of the line MBP with 16GB RAM.

I still love the language compared to ObjC but the tooling is abysmal. Every year we hold out hope that Xcode will magically get better but its the iTunes of IDEs at this point.

emdowling··on Homebrew 1.0.0
Awesome, thanks for that. Would be good for it to be listed on the article. It only tells you that it no longer requires ownership after you have been asked to give it for the migration.
emdowling··on Homebrew 1.0.0
There has been a lot of talk in HN comments recently about Homebrew installing to `/usr/local`. With macOS Sierra, the user can no longer write to this folder without specifically owning it. Is there a security risk here and if so, whats the best workaround?
emdowling··on Automatic laundry folding
Hold up. A wine fridge is not in the same category as this. A wine fridge is a necessity.
emdowling··on 31 years later, we found the flight recorders
It's truly mind boggling that airlines don't do this. Given the cost of an aircraft and the value it represents, surely the data cost is more than worth it. I hope MH370 has changed the mindset of airlines and aircraft manufacturers.

I know that pilots are against live streaming, always on voice recorders in the cockpit due to privacy concerns but surely there are ways to regulate access to that (eg: it goes to the safety regulator of the airline's country of governance and is held for 48 hours, released only if an accident occurs).

I don't put a server into staging use let alone production use without having comprehensive monitoring in place for CPU, memory, etc. Putting a $200mm+ aircraft in the sky without monitoring every single thing in real time with multiple layers of redundancy seems unbelievably insane.

emdowling··on Apple R&D Reveals a Pivot Is Coming
It does. It has two of them in fact.
emdowling··on Apple’s actual role in podcasting: be careful what you wish for
Every single Apple app has a share icon which also lets you post to Twitter, Facebook, etc. Why is it such a problem for you if Overcast offers this feature? You don't need to use it. Not attacking, just confused about why the presence of the feature is so offensive to you.
emdowling··on Why You Can’t Lose Weight on a Diet
This article and the concept it discusses - that we have a "weight set point" - seems overly simplistic. Maybe I'm missing something, but weight isn't an indicator of obesity (or rather, it is a very poor one). Body fat percentage is a much better suited for this. Is the weight set point theory based on an overall weight or an amount of body fat?

Personally, I've been working out very regularly for some time but the change hasn't been in my weight, just in my body fat. Going purely on weight, "dieting" (eg: eating healthy and eating less) hasn't changed my weight at all. But I am orders of magnitude fitter and stronger than I was before. These articles only serve to highlight how little we know about how our bodies function.

emdowling··on GPUImage 2
I've shipped two apps with GPUImage and have found it to be very fast (when used properly) and incredibly capable. The biggest issue in GPUImage 1 was correctly setting up the filter chain; an incorrectly configured chain seemed to be the primary cause of issues around performance and output (or lack there of).

The new API is way more concise and super clear. Particularly love the use of blocks for configuration groups, as it makes preset behaviour more portable and easily defined (say, for a Instagram-style app).

Great work Brad, this is a much-loved framework and it's great to see the changes in v2.

emdowling··on Freelance Pilots
This would never fly (excuse the pun). For all the practical reasons like currency on so many aircraft and the cost (being checked to line on a A380 takes 2-3 months full time - who pays for that? Simulators ain't cheap!)

Above all else, the human aspect is terrible. I'm flabbergasted the author glosses over this. A Frankfurt - Chicago - Frankfurt trip would see a pilot away for 3-4 days as it is. Factor in not getting a direct flight back and waiting 15 hours for the opportunity to fly a 1 hour flight, it's gonna be closer to 5-6 days. What spouse is going to be happy with that?! Pilots already have enough stress worrying about how to their family while away - adding in a variable time frame would be hell on earth.

emdowling··on Apple March 2016 Keynote – 10am PDT
Not really. The products aren't upgradable or repairable by the end user, but as they demonstrated today, they are upgradeable (to brand new things like solar panels) and repairable by Apple themselves. I for one hate the idea of an end-user upgradeable smart phone. That sounds like a minefield of driver issues and the like that I just don't want. Its why I moved away from Windows in the first place.

I think it makes a great deal of sense to consolidate the upgrades and repairs - they can do it far more efficiently at scale.

emdowling··on Osxc – Simple configuration tool for OS X
we use Ansible across 300 hosts, including some Mac guests. Well-tested playbooks for Mac are hard to find, so this is awesome.
emdowling··on Show HN: Stash, an evernote for command line
Would love something like this for 1Password. Being able to quickly grab credentials from command line would be great when logging in to boxes not set up for key-based login.
emdowling··on Moves joins Facebook
The post talks about data not going anywhere. Will the app itself continue to be updated? I recently stopped wearing a fitbit in favor of just using Moves and couldn't be happier. I hope the app continues to live on.
emdowling··on An experiment in iAd
Actually talking about two very different products here. iAd banner ads, what the OP is talking about, are cheap and accessible.

The large minimum spends still apply to rich media iAds. Despite iAd Producer being readily available, the ads you create in it can only be used as creative for rich media campaigns. That requires a relationship with an iAd account manager and a minimum spend of $100,000 per campaign per region (as of last week).

emdowling··on App.io Ads – Your game becomes the mobile ad, with try-before-install
Might be a miscommunication on our site! We run native iOS apps in the simulator environment - if you have a simulator build of your native app, we can use it as an ad.

Our previous/existing product enables apps to run inside any browser, and we have a lot of people using this platform for QA, customer support, etc.

emdowling··on App.io Ads – Your game becomes the mobile ad, with try-before-install
Thanks so much for your thoughts. Co-founder here.

- We give the user the opportunity to download the app at any time. It isn't in the video, but along the bottom, a download button is available at all times so the user can get to the App Store as quickly as possible. On loading: We actively encourage all apps using the platform to bypass menus and get straight to the content. That converts much better.

- We do a few things to ensure every user has a great experience and apps are not presented in a negative light. As quickly as we can (generally 200ms), we run a speed test to ensure latency and bandwidth are sufficient for a good experience. We also allow advertisers to specify a fallback video or static image, so if we can't deliver a great interactive experience, we are able to offer an ad which is at least as good as the existing types.

I'll also mention that the video on the homepage is actually a live filmed demo of a trial campaign.

emdowling··on US burns through all high-skill visas for 2015 in less than a week
Good to note that this does not include the E3 visa available exclusively to Australians. Australia never uses its full allocation of 10,000 E3's each year and they are incredibly easy to get. the candidate simply needs a Bachelor's degree or higher as well as a job offer. If approved, their spouse is also instantly eligible for a E3 visa entitling them to work too.

Generally, it takes 2-4 weeks to get one from start to finish if you have a good immigration lawyer.

This sort of visa should not be exclusive to Australia. As an Aussie, I get the benefit from it but at the same time, I feel everyone should have access to it. I hope visa reform comes soon!

Anyone struggling to hire, big or small, should market to Australians. Its very cheap to fly out and interview a heap of smart candidates who would love to work for startups in the Bay Area.

emdowling··on Everpix was great. This is how it died
Drew said the same thing at TC Disrupt in SF this year. Reading between the lines: All the acquisitions and ability to pay 300+ staff without needing to touch a massive $250 million pot of money is basically telling the market (eg: Box): "We can play the enterprise game very well and have the revenue to prove it"
