emblaegh··on Gavin Newsom wants to take smartphones out of schools
So what? Killing a scapegoat does not a problem solve. You shut down facebook and then what happens? Everyone shuts the phone and enjoy the sunset or would they all just move to the next addictive app? Marlboros are not harmful, tobacco is. If we managed to largely curb smoking, it was by restricting access to tobacco.
emblaegh··on Gavin Newsom wants to take smartphones out of schools
What do you suggest they persecute facebook for? Making their app too fun for school?
emblaegh··on I am sick of LeetCode-style interviews
I passed that round and I’m 100% sure the code I wrote was not runnable as it was written.
emblaegh··on If English was written like Chinese (1999)
I was responding to the assertion that writing Chinese using an alphabet would render the text incomprehensible, not arguing that China or Japan should switch over.
emblaegh··on If English was written like Chinese (1999)
I find hard to believe every language in the planet can be successfully expressed using some sort of alphabetic system, except for Japanese/Chinese (and local variants)
emblaegh··on I am sick of LeetCode-style interviews
From my interview at facebook some four years ago, I am inclined to believe they disable intelisense so the candidates do not get tangled up in the minutiae of language syntax, function arguments, etc. and instead focus on the algorithm they are trying to write.
emblaegh··on mRNA Cancer Vaccine Reprograms Immune System to Tackle Glioblastoma in 48 Hours
You seem to imply that the only possible source of slowness if safety, which might not be the case (I've no idea).
emblaegh··on Atomic nucleus excited with laser: A breakthrough after decades
Classical there is used in the sense of “non relativistic”.
emblaegh··on Python Chart Examples
Nope, just plain matplotlib. The code was huge mess written under insane pressure, but I’m sure I kept it somewhere in my backups.
emblaegh··on Python Chart Examples
I’m particularly proud of this[1] figure I made using matplotlib for my PhD thesis. And yes, this is a single mpl figure and those are all individual axes. You do not want to see the source code.

emblaegh··on Physically healthy 28-year-old woman schedules euthanasia due to depression
“Easier and equally dignified” would make my comment clearer.
emblaegh··on Physically healthy 28-year-old woman schedules euthanasia due to depression
I can be really wrong here, but I assumed anything a doctor can do you can do it yourself. Would need to get drugs illegally probably, but would spare the family the media circus, and the (presumed) bureaucracy of getting euthanasia approved. My question was out of genuine curiosity of her motivation of choosing one way over the other.
emblaegh··on Physically healthy 28-year-old woman schedules euthanasia due to depression
Haven't read the article, but does it say why'd she go for euthanasia? I'd imagine there are dignified ways of bringing this matter into one's own hands.

Edit: I think this may have come off as “geez just kill yourself and spare us the drama”, but I’m just genuinely curious why’d she choose one over the other whenever I assume she has the means to pursue both.

emblaegh··on What Is Enlightenment? (1784)
> It's deeper than that: the vast majority of people believe in science in the exact same way as the used to believe in Christianism. Try asking around for bulletproof proofs of the Earth's roundness. Or communicating the idea that time and space aren't really distinct entities.

I'm not so sure. The common person definitely cannot give scientific explanations for most things, but between modern medicine, computers and all else, society is drowning in very hard proof that science is an effective and worthwhile endeavour, in a way that i don't think most religion is. Though admittedly that does not seem to completely stop people form breaking away from science the same way as they break away from religion (see flat earthers).

emblaegh··on On the Double-Slit Experiment and Quantum Interference in the Wolfram Model (2020)
I can imagine you snubbing Hamilton by going all "can the least action principle explain a single phenomenon not already explained by the forces + newton's laws? Thought not. Crank".

I have no idea what worfram's model is about, and I agree that the language he uses to publicise it is kinda twatty. However your insane criterion for what constitutes a theory/formalism worth exploring is clearly guided by your bias against the man.

emblaegh··on Array languages vs. the curse of the spreadsheet
Everything is unreadable before you learn it.
emblaegh··on Returns: Brings functional programming to Python land
My point is that the sample code is pretty readable, it just involves patterns and jargon from other languages that Python users might not be used to.
emblaegh··on Returns: Brings functional programming to Python land
Code readability can’t be judged unless you consider to whom it’s meant to be readable.
emblaegh··on Returns: Brings functional programming to Python land
> I'm not sure what's so "functional" about it though.

This is a library about composing function, can't get more functional than that.

emblaegh··on Returns: Brings functional programming to Python land
What if it is not actually more complicated, but just contains concepts and patterns you haven't learned yet or are not used to? All this library offers is a way of composing functions, the kinda stuff that comes default in many languages.
emblaegh··on Returns: Brings functional programming to Python land
None of these has the functionality that the library offers, i.e. providing an interface to compose functions that consume and produce these types.
emblaegh··on Returns: Brings functional programming to Python land
People in this thread seem to be conflating "it's less readable" with "it's written in a dialect I'm not used to". The samples are perfectly readable to anyone who spent some time with a languages that offers similar functionality, other criticisms notwithstanding.
emblaegh··on Ask HN: Which Python type checker should I use?
Whatever bad experience you get from the (admittedly) immature tooling, pales in comparison to the intense discomfort or working with an untyped Python code base of even moderate size, specially ones written by many different contributors.
emblaegh··on Nobel Prize winner Gregg Semenza tallies tenth retraction (2023)
> Einstein did not discover that the speed of light was fixed. This was a consequence of Maxwell's research on electromagnetism in the late 19th C.

The principle of relativity, which what OP was talking about, cannot be derived from Maxwell's equations alone.

> I mean, it’s ridiculous the number of eggs that they used. I often joke that an Andalusian would not have been able to get through a meal without eggs.

I wonder if this is also the origin of so many egg heavy deserts in Portugal.

emblaegh··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
No offense, but I cannot let a recommendation for this film go unchallenged. This film is just trashy pseudo-scientific new-agey mambo jambo from beginning to end. It essentially started the whole "use your mind to quantum mechanically alter the vibrational frequencies of reality" brand of quackery. It's a film not worth anyone's time.
emblaegh··on The Piccadilly line’s new air conditioned trains
Those are just refurbished current stock I believe, so likely will still have no air con.
emblaegh··on Ask HN: What programming language do we use if IQ of whole humanity reach 160?
Butterflies
emblaegh··on Are we doing this again? Yes, we're doing this again
Even the most milquetoast political opinion attracts an unreasonable amount of hate online. Not everyone can handle this kind of stuff.
emblaegh··on Are we doing this again? Yes, we're doing this again
