elromulous··on Omega-3 intake counteracts symptoms of anxiety and depression in mice
As the other comment mentions, mouse studies are hilariously cheap compared to human trials. We're talking many orders of magnitude. A couple grad students can do a mouse study at costs very much approaching zero.
elromulous··on Omega-3 intake counteracts symptoms of anxiety and depression in mice
This is exciting, and should be fairly easy to confirm/deny with a double blind trial in humans. There's no money to be had in it for big pharma, so funding it would have to come from some other means, but it should be possible.
elromulous··on Installing Arch Linux on a Laptop
This was the process I followed:

1. Downloaded EndeavourOS

2. Installed it as easily as Ubuntu

Edit: the arch documentation is second to none

elromulous··on Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin discovered that stars are mostly made of hydrogen
I know this is somewhat tongue in cheek, but I'm going to answer as if it's serious:

Did she randomly decide which ones she would pray for? Perhaps she was more likely to pray when she knew she was less prepared.

elromulous··on Steve Ballmer's incorrect binary search interview question
Given that the number is not being picked randomly, this is more a game theory problem than a software problem.

elromulous··on Molecule restores cognition and memory in Alzheimer's disease mouse study
That's the thing. Many of these work in mice because mice have such a short lifespan. Whereas if they lived much longer, they'd die from the side effects.
elromulous··on Google Pixel 9 Pro
The Zenfone 10 traded height for depth. It was very thick.
elromulous··on The Marshmallow Test does not reliably predict adult functioning
Good points. But you know what's even more heritable than those traits? Wealth.
elromulous··on C Isn't a Programming Language Anymore (2022)
Agreed. Yes and, folks should read more than just the title before taking strong stances on the article.
elromulous··on C Isn't a Programming Language Anymore (2022)
Did you read the article?

You're taking the title too literally. The author is talking about how C is also a protocol, in that it is the defacto definition for ABIs.

Yes, but not as high-stakes as an autopilot in a commercial aircraft!
elromulous··on Open source AI is the path forward
100%. With this licensing model, meta gets to reap the benefits of open source (people contributing, social cachet), without any of the real detriment (exposing secret sauce).

elromulous··on Immunotherapy Is Changing Cancer Treatment Forever
Can someone explain why it's taken so long to go from the success CAR-T had with non solid tumors, to getting an immunotherapy that indeed is effective against solid tumors?
elromulous··on Immunotherapy Is Changing Cancer Treatment Forever
Of course on a completely different level, but I think this will be similar to how e.g. antibiotics or biologics have played out. First generation has awful side effects as researchers focus on getting anything to work at all. Then once a certain baseline of efficacy is reached, they can focus on reducing side effects.
elromulous··on Poor Man's Kinesis Keyboard: The K'nexis Keyboard (2005)
@dang can you add "2005" to the title?

It's cool but very dated.

elromulous··on Hawaii home mistakenly built on Bay Area woman's land to be torn down
The title almost makes it sound like the house was mistakenly built in the bay area instead of Hawaii.
elromulous··on Finnish startup says it can speed up any CPU by 100x
I could not be more skeptical of this. Do folks know more about this claim?
elromulous··on Please don't mention AI again
+1.

What happened to ML? With the relatively recent craze precipitated by chatgpt, the term AI (perhaps in no small part due to "OpenAI") has completely taken over. ML is a more apt description of the current wave.

elromulous··on One in four US households likely exceed new soil lead guidance levels
"...far cheaper strategy: capping current soils with clean soils and/or mulch"

Oh yes, cover the thing up and let someone else deal with it. The same strategy employed for years with lead paint.

We can either spend billions covering it up over and over again, or we can deal with it once and be done.

So many folks here criticizing Google for this move. Can you really blame them? A year or so ago everyone was eulogizing them because of chatgpt. Damned if they do or don't.
