Curious software engineer with an interest in the human body, human rights & privacy in particular. Occasionally more snarky than desired. More questions than answers.

Pardon my typos, touchscreens and sausage fingers are the spawn of the devil.

elric··on Finger: the 1971 social network that never died
A discussion about Finger without a mention of WebFinger[1]? Similar in spirit, but HTTP based.

elric··on Google has acquired the data of failed US airline Spirit
I fully share your concerns. And I don't understand how apparently tons of Teams and email conversations can be archived and sold without any kind of scrutiny. How can such data be sold without the consent of all involved parties? What gives Google the right to use it to train LLMs? Is that just a way of washing away the legal protections?
elric··on Incident with Github.com [resolved]
> We're starting to have the conversation of "do we need to replace GitHub as our CI/CD pipeline?"

Did you have the conversation "do we need to move from $whatever CI/CD to GitHub Actions?" beforehand? What were the arguments in favour?

elric··on Linear algebra done right
Nice seeing you on HN. I thoroughly enjoyed the No Bullshit LA and Maths & Physics books. I wish more books would include concept maps, I find them a very useful tool for understanding how things fit in the broader picture.
elric··on GIMP Development Update
Welcome to 2026 unfounded hot takes.

Or less snarky: what's your gripe with zipped XML? It compresses reasonably well, has a useful structure, and has decades of mature tooling around it.

elric··on Research papers using "kidney disappointment" instead of "kidney failure"
I hope the synopsis is the only thing that got mangled by the thesaurus bot...
elric··on Choral: Choreographic Programming for Java
Thanks for sharing this. I hadn't heard of choreographic programming.

Does it compile straight Java bytecode, or does it generate Java code which is then compiled by javac?

elric··on I made tinnitus my friend, then it disappeared [video]
That's not the same thing as visual snow. Or rather, it doesn't have to be. Lots of people do see phosphenes with their eyes closed, like "prisoner's cinema". Human vision is wild.
elric··on I made tinnitus my friend, then it disappeared [video]
You're right, but not everyone can tell the difference and not everyone can describe their experiences very well. There's also the blue field entoptic phenomenon (white blood cells!), and a bunch of similar things within the eye which can look similar to "floaters".
elric··on I made tinnitus my friend, then it disappeared [video]
PSA that if you have pulsatile tinnitus, where you hear a sort of whooshing sound in time to your heart beat, it might be treatable by surgical intervention (such as stenting). It could even be caused by dangerous issues in the blood vessels around your ear, so it's worth getting that checked out. An MRI Angiogram (MRA/MRV) with gadolinium contrast seems to be the best way of catching those issues. Interventional neurologists are the folks who are best suited to help you.

Just some information I wish I had known at the start of my tinnitus journey.

elric··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Sounds cool. Is this going to be open source, and can we find it somewhere?
elric··on How Golden Is Silence, Actually?
> you shouldn't live in an apartment

I wish I were rich enough to distance myself from the noise of the riffraff. But with some 8 billion humans on the planet, that seems unsustainable.

Building with soundproofing in mind would be a good place to start. Asshole-proofing is trickier. There's nothing unreasonable about expecting people to behave in apartments (or elsewhere). Many (most?) places have laws about noise and nuisance, getting them enforced has not been easy in my experience.

Edit: 8+ billion people, apparently. I'm getting old.

elric··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
It is rude and annoying in general. But even in quiet cars it seems like many people just don't give a fuck and will simply jabber on obnoxiously without any care for anyone else.

Would be nice if people could keep their noise levels down in general.

elric··on Decimen Optical Transfer: fountain-coded QR file transfer
Other cameras could presumably be snooping on the data transfer.
elric··on Decimen Optical Transfer: fountain-coded QR file transfer
Neat, finally an easy way of transferring files between devices that doesn't rely on online services -- no clue why we didn't solve that ages ago.

Adding encryption shouldn't be hard, as long as you can communicate the keys out of band.

Could probably achieve the same result using audio instead of video, but maybe that would be too annoying?

elric··on EU now fears US interference in European elections
From a technical voter fraud perspective, paper ballots remain the answer.

From a propaganda perspective, things are probably more complicated. I imagine some European democracies are more easily influenced than others. And when the EU itself is on an authoritarian bender, it's hard to see how foreign meddling could make things much worse.

More transparency into party funding might be a good place to start. That's something that seems pretty vague at least here in BE. More direct representation would also be pretty sweet, but that might be asking for too much...

elric··on Una GPS smart watch – Repairable, USB-C charging, developer-friendly
My Garmin Epix's Body Battery levels might as well be randomly generated. They don't correlate at all to how I feel. YMMV.
elric··on Stop Killing the Internet: No Digital ID and No Age Verification
This initiative has the ID "ECI(2026)000011". If I understand this correctly, that means there have only been eleven citizen initiatives this year? Is that system working as designed, because that's a shockingly low number.

Edit: the initiatives themselves also have shockingly low numbers of signatures. A few thousand. A million are required for the EC to take notice. This system seems a bit shitty. But maybe I'm misunderstanding it.

elric··on EU Fines Google $1.02B for Favoring Its Own Services
JFC these comments.

It should be clear to everyone that Google is too big and is engaging in anti-competitive behaviour. The EU giving them a token fine every once in a while is just part of the cost of doing business for Google. Google could just choose to not favour their own services and to give users a choice. But they don't. Hence the fine.

elric··on MouthPad: A Tongue-Controlled Touchpad
I remember reading about tongue based sonar for divers, where the output of the sonar would stimulate electrodes on various parts of the tongue to indicate relative direction.
elric··on Thanks HN for 15 years of support and helping me find my life's work
I love the "no backseat driving" rule. That kind of behaviour is what caused me to stop engaging with StackOverflow.
elric··on Goodbye, and Thanks for All the Bikesheds
I don't think he was talking about "the birds and the bees"-talk, but about the "some random men will send you unsollicited dick pics just because you're a girl"-talk.
elric··on Painting the sides of railroad rails white to reduce derailment
I'm surprised that this is as effective as the numbers suggest. I would have thought steel rails would be pretty good at reflecting/radiating heat. TIL.
elric··on Kaiser nurses say AI, surveillance are making their jobs and patient care worse
I've seen the quality of transcriptions, and it's awful. I wouldn't trust it for something as trivial as meeting notes, let alone medical transcripts. Either this doctor is going over the notes later to summarize them for your records anyway (which will cost them just as much time as the old way), or they're relying on the LLM to summarize, which is even more irresponsible.
elric··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
90-95k would be impossibly high in Belgium, which is but a stone's throw away from Germany. If that isn't enough money to save, you're doing something very wrong, or your idea of a cheap city might differ from mine.
elric··on GPT-5.6 Sol Ultra will be in Codex
Everyone is falling over themselves out of FOMO.
elric··on My favorite keyboards
You find it strange that people have preferences? The ultimate ergonomic keyboard is the one that feels good *for you*.

I don't like the Ergodox-style keyboards myself because they're missing a row, and no amount of meta layering is going to convince me otherwise.

elric··on My favorite keyboards
Kinesis Freestyle Gaming for me. The "traditional" Freestye has a wrist pad that's made out of a material so horrible I returned the keyboard immediately. Yuck. This was years ago, maybe newer models are better? But I'm very happy with the Freestyle Gaming in general.
elric··on The US ambassador had Belgian police stop our reporting
From what I remember from an interview with the rabbi in question, the "oral suction" was not involved in this case. But because these procedures are being performed illocitly, it is hard to know what's going on or how sanitary it is.
elric··on The US ambassador had Belgian police stop our reporting
That isn't even the point though. The circumcision itself is perfectly legal in Belgium. The legal issue is with the lack of qualifications of the ones performing them in this case.
