I work on the cinematch team at netflix. The several hundred blended algorithms that was output of the grand prize winning team is very... impractical... for netflix' needs. We cherry picked (and then modified) the best of the bunch.
Also, across the street from the eBay HQ in Campbell there was a restaurant that had failed and Hooters wanted to open a location in it's place. Meg fought Hooters for nearly two years.
Good luck HP, you're going to need it.
the 28-day window was solely a way to lower the cost of buying dvd's. Those savings went into buying more streaming licenses.
And the the grandparent - the dvd company isn't _required_ to work with the content creators, but it would probably be dumb for them not to.
I hold my employer to certain standards and I do not defend anything they do automatically - for instance, I thought the way the plan split/price hike was communicated was just awful. So I'm not trolling.
When I first heard this plan many months ago, my immediate reaction was to look for another job. I have, perhaps obviously, decided to stay. One of the biggest reasons I've decided to stay is that I believe Reed is one of the most honest, hungry, and intelligent CEO's around.
These changes will cause short term pain, but I honestly believe the products will be much better after the split.
No. Not at all.
The plans were split in preparation for the company split. This has been in planning for a long time.
Nearly no one I've interviewed from yahoo has bad-mouthed their former employer, so my negative bias is from working with people that have passed the technical interview and have been hired... the quirks that people pick up after working at yahoo for many years are odd to me (like the strange desire to put squid in front of everything).
After interviewing dozens of folks from yahoo, I've pained the following picture about the engineering there - the vast majority of it is stuck in 1995, some bits of it have evolved isolated from the rest of the tech world - it's steam punk, then there are a few parts that are shiny and new but skin deep. It seems like a sad place.
We've hired lots of folks from yahoo to work on infrastructure and one guy from reddit to be a cloud SRE. but we've yet to hire a security guy from sony.
The netflix prize would not have been won when it was without rbm.
