elpakal··on Apple Intelligence Foundation Language Models [pdf]
> Code data is obtained from license-filtered1 open source repositories on GitHub. The bulk of the code data covers 14 common programming languages, including: Swift, Python, C, Objective-C, C++, JavaScript, Java, and Go.

That's interesting, looking forward to seeing how accurate the output is for Swift.

elpakal··on Show HN: Hooper – AI-driven stats and highlights for basketball play
This is a cool idea, nice work. I spent some time as an assistant college coach in the NCAA and the amount of time spent reviewing film and capturing key plays/schemes etc is huge. I do some computer vision and always wondered if it would ever be accurate enough to skip over dribbling up the courts, time outs etc so scouts could just get to the important parts of the film—it looks like you are on track with what you claim it can do. I might sign up for the beta... good luck!
elpakal··on Ask Siri, Dictation and Privacy
OK. But it's not a "view", it's a fact from the terms. If I can't post the line then it looks like I'm just reposting the terms, but searching through HN history tells me this one bit has not been surfaced before.
elpakal··on Ask Siri, Dictation and Privacy
Same here, iPhone15 though
elpakal··on Alexa is in millions of households and Amazon is losing billions
> Make it a value add in my life and I wouldn't mind paying a subscription fee for it.

I dunno, I feel like the value was priced in the purchase price for me. I would not consider paying both a purchase price and subscription fee for it and probably not a subscription fee at all because all they ever do is go up. What would I do with this dumb robot in my house when I don't agree to pay for their latest fee structure.

elpakal··on NodeSwift: Bridge Node.js and Swift
I get paid to write Swift code at the day job, at night I write a lot of node backend code for a side project. I have to say that it's pretty refreshing to jump in and not have the (increasingly) opinionated Swift compiler barking at me for everything I do. Unfortunately Swift has also made me extremely paranoid in JS, where I find that everything I write is checked for null, but I don't think I'd trade the freedom in nodeJS for Swift's type safety. This is super cool though, well done.
elpakal··on Even Apple cannot explain why we need AI in our lives
Hmm. That would be like asking them to explain why you need fast code—you could easily argue you don't, but it _can_ make your experience a lot better. There's a weird rush to market right now where there are a lot of examples of these LLMs being wrong which do not help, but don't forget, AI has been around for a long time (ever googled something?).
elpakal··on Wells Fargo Fires Over a Dozen for 'Simulation of Keyboard Activity'
I would consider our security tooling draconian yet they haven't said anything about this. And I've been using it for about 2 years
elpakal··on Wells Fargo Fires Over a Dozen for 'Simulation of Keyboard Activity'
`caffeinate -d` keeps my corporate mandated screensaver and forced sleep timeout from happening, which usually suck to recover from.
elpakal··on The Swift compiler is slow due to how types are inferred
I use a swift toolchain with JetBrains' CLion (for CLIs) and it's pretty good and quite refreshing when compared to Xcode.
elpakal··on What UI density means and how to design for it
Definitely understand the tradeoffs here but you could set your default text size in your OS settings to be smaller to get more volume on your screen.
elpakal··on GPT-4o
> explicitly states that much of the effort for this release was focused on things that make it feel magical (response times, multiple domains, etc.), not on moving the needle on quantifiable practical performance.

Hmm, did you mean implicitly? I've yet to see where they say anything to the likes of not "moving the needle on quantifiable practical performance."

elpakal··on GPT-4o
Where does it explicitly say this?
elpakal··on Apple introduces M4 chip

elpakal··on A Lego model of financial capitalism
Are you still on the hook for the debt, though? I though that's what bankruptcy was for
elpakal··on Launch HN: PointOne (YC W24) – Automated time tracking for lawyers
This looks really similar (in concept, your design is way better and you have more features) to something I built with my lawyer/legaltech business partner a few years ago. We even applied to YC and didn’t get in.

I’m curious, though, how accurate is your llm for things like trying to “pull subtle context from an attorney’s browser activity to associate that work with a client”? I suspect this needs to be damn near bullet proof, otherwise attorneys will tear it apart. We stuck purely to file tracking, comparing diffs and syncing activity in real time on a an app with GitHub like heatmap that could also flag suspicious time entries. It worked great but we had a hard time getting adoption because people did not want to force their attorneys to use it. Interesting to see the times change dynamics, good luck!

elpakal··on Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan's online rant spurs threats to supes, police reports
Yea, I'm not saying he didn't incite it. I'm saying the article didn't try very hard to make it clear he didn't write the letters.
elpakal··on Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan's online rant spurs threats to supes, police reports
Came here to voice my frustration about the muddying of the waters and the quality of this article. Took me a few minutes of cynical reading to understand that he did not send the letters, someone else did.
elpakal··on Zuckerberg Spent $187M Buying 1600 Acres of Hawaii and Now Is Building a Bunker
Aren't there requirements for being Hawaiian for buying land on the islands? Or at least, there are weird conditions around owning the property vs the land.
elpakal··on How to do OCR on a Mac using the CLI or just Python
I don't know why but instead of pasting the text it copied to make sure it worked, I made it read it:

shortcuts run ocr-text -i <A PATH TO SOME IMAGE> | say -v Fred

elpakal··on Prompt engineering
just here to add a +1 to this comment. also saying something is "hallucinating" doesn't make it less incorrect.
elpakal··on Ask HN: Is anyone using GitHub Copilot in production?
I added it to JetBrains’ CLion, which I use to write my pure Swift projects.
elpakal··on Don't build AI products the way everyone else is doing it
This drug only killed 20% of patients. We should sell it.
elpakal··on Don't build AI products the way everyone else is doing it
That it will be inaccurate. A lot.
elpakal··on Don't build AI products the way everyone else is doing it
I think we'll find that, when the dust settles, AI's usefulness wasn't as impactful as we thought. AI is only as good as its data and no meaningful dataset is 100% representative and 100% accurate IMHO. Don't get me wrong-- it's neat and all, and it can be somewhat useful in the right context, but the hype is huge. Much bigger than Kubernetes ever saw and probably bigger than blockchain.
elpakal··on Hawaii governor says state is looking to 'acquire land' destroyed in fires
So if my house burned down (it didn't I'm just trying to understand) do I not still own the lot beneath the rubble?
elpakal··on GitHub merge queue is generally available
How impactful is this if we don't require up-to-date on PR branches?
elpakal··on Tuition costs have risen 710% since 1983
+1, and don't forget that they don't force you to pay room & board for your dorm your first two years.

I'm a product of the California Community College system and a lot of my teachers were teaching both in the UC and Cal State systems at the same time. I am happy with the quality of education I received.

elpakal··on macOS command-line tools you might not know about
`xed .` Is probably my most underrated macOS command. It will open Xcode using either your project or workspace file.
