elliotpage··on Far Cry
Far Cry 2 is in some ways an anti-precursor to many systems that are now standard in games of its type (especially its sequels, which go in a much safer homogeneous direction). In particular, its systems are realistic and exact to a fault in a way that often feels antagonistic to the player. While this is a pain in the butt it also makes the game fascinating to play - you are an interloper in the space it provides and are not welcome.

For example:

* Checkpoints respawn full of enemies and you never manage to fully exert control or supremacy on the world.

* In world map that you have to look at in the game space and time continues while you do so.

* Vehicle physics are punishing and you cannot press a button to "fix" them. If you crash that jeep, it's done.

* Weapons constantly jam and are generally crap to use.

* Thrown weapons have physics - ie: grenades roll down hills (often back towards you)

* Plotline and factions are hazy and undefined. You have a core mission (hunt down an arms trader) but everything around this feels directionless and punishing.

* The game does not do much or any "fudging" of the systems to increase player enjoyment. Often games will silently assist the player to make the game more exciting (your health is not linear and goes further as you approach death, enemy and your own aiming of weapons is improved or reduced to highten tension, combat arenas will be arranged to be more "fair to the player) and Far Cry 2 ignores this.

I would hesitate to call Far Cry 2 a "fun" game but it is certainly a good one, and has spawned a lot of good discussion, like this piece and pretty much the whole of the Idle Thumbs Podcast(now on extended Hiatus, sadly).

elliotpage··on New, slippery toilet coating provides cleaner flushing, saves water
This may be a little broad of a question, but: Why is this being commercialized at all? The linked article makes a lot of noise about benefits for the developing world but making the coating tool dependent on the profit motive will naturally target those with existing money - the developed world. I'm just having a hard time squaring this particular circle.
elliotpage··on Baffled student tells Twitter: 'I'm not a Chinese agent'
Sounds like the exact thing a Chinese agent would say!
elliotpage··on Show HN: Personal Management System
This looks great, and I especially like the upfront and honest "Support" section.

As someone who is trying to move my information under my own control at present (Rather than using and paying for multiple cloud systems) I understand the driving force behind the project and will be giving it a shot!

elliotpage··on Show HN: Personal Management System
This is very much a personal reaction, but it sounds charming as written!
elliotpage··on Google Glass May Have an Afterlife as a Device to Teach Autistic Children
Agreed - while dressed up in technology (that flopped, for good reason) this is simply another way to try and force people into being "normal".

There is no need for this device, or the motive behind it, to exist.

elliotpage··on User Inyerface – A worst-practice UI experiment
I got a good laugh out of this for a few seconds before getting actually frustrated with it. Mostly because my bank does a lot of these terrible things.
elliotpage··on Raspberry Pi 4

elliotpage··on Raspberry Pi 4
Can't wait to buy this, boot it up, play with it for four hours, then stick it in the same desk drawer with the other Pis I have bought over the years.

(The upgrades look great, just my attention span is not so great)

If you need a bespoke dialog box to chastise you for following an expected workflow, then your user experience is lacking.

The Save/Export split still catches me out. I'm not about to burn the barn down, but each time it makes me grunt in frustration.

elliotpage··on What happens if building more housing doesn’t work?
Your options are rather extreme and unsuitable, by your own admission.

The most direct solution is to prohibit landlordism and private renting. This prevents housing from being treated as an investment and keeps it within the housing pool.

elliotpage··on What happens if building more housing doesn’t work?
I appreciate you are trying to provide a helpful suggestion buy this is not a solution. 1) I live in the UK. I'm sure Chicago is lovely though! 2) Housing price rises effect entire areas and transport networks, so anything in reasonable commute range (especially if you rely on public transport) also has prices inflated and driven out of reach.
elliotpage··on What happens if building more housing doesn’t work?
I am with you. Housing must be forcefully de-commodified and it must no longer be considered an investment.

I am currently trying to buy my first house and every single place I look at has "Ideal for a first time buyer or as an investment opportunity" in the description so I am in direct competition with these parasites. Frustrating to say the least.

Good Catte, thank you for the photos
elliotpage··on Show HN: Should you buy a house and rent it out?
Housing should be plentiful enough and of a reasonable cost. Failing that, it should be supplied by the state. This isn't difficult.
elliotpage··on Show HN: Should you buy a house and rent it out?
Many of them are, as they are ignoring local regulations for private hire vehicles.
elliotpage··on Show HN: Should you buy a house and rent it out?
No. Let other people buy it. Buy-to-rent should be a crime.
elliotpage··on How to liberate a Chromebook
To echo some of the other comments - this looks like a useful guide but the attitude is atrocious. You only need to make your anti-google complaint once and then move on.

elliotpage··on Ask HN: What to do after $8M (all cash, post tax) exit?
I would recommend retiring and enjoying your time with your family. The money can come and go, but the time you have is irreplaceable.

Please consider donating and investing it in causes you believe in. There are so many ways this money can have a real positive impact to people and the world. Don't feel you need to throw massive gobs around - talk to the people running these causes and see what would help them out.

elliotpage··on Ask HN: What podcasts do you listen to regularly?
I cycle out shows pretty fast but these are the ones that remain in my playlist:

* Trashfuture: A British politics podcast about the future is trash. Insightful, if a little madcap at times.

* Boonta Vista: Australian politics. The main host has an amazing radio voice.

* Citations Needed: Politics, helps analyse the media and its tropes to give you a better handle on issues and how to engage with them.

* Previously in Europe: European politics, often takes time to highlight issues and countries that do not get much mass media play.

* Revolutions: History podcast - really well constructed nuggets breaking down revolutions throughout history. I personally fled to this after getting exhausted by Hardcore History.

* Shift-F1: A formula 1 podcast. Both hosts are passionate and also have different levels of knowledge about the sport and history which engenders good discussion. The schedule is super disrupted right now due to on one of the hosts having a baby.

* The Irish Passport: Irish politics- more a series of investigative essays than "What is on this week???", very good and earnest topics and coverage.

* The Bugle: Political Satire. What John Oliver did before he got big. Andy Zaltzmann is an amazing satirist, and should be more widely appreciated. Warning: Puns

* Waypoint Radio: Video games from a set of interesting voices. Can be very Marmite due to how blinkered the hosts can be on some topics/ with certain people.

* 99% Invisible: See other comments!

And finally: * Chapo Trap House: Political comedy. You know what this is.

* Reel Politik: Like Chapo, but recorded by angry young Brits. Awful sound quality, sometimes a golden nugget hidden within. Somehow gets some amazing guests. Listening to this gets you targeted by the Daily Mail, probably.

elliotpage··on FrontPage 98: Elegant and Exquisite (1997)
This page is great. It loads instantly, shows you the content up front, has clear navigation, and has clear contrast between elements.

Also, it has frames, which I honestly miss even though I am glad we have moved past them.

Agreed.

The folding of other consortia modelled after DEAL during negotiations has been shameful so I am glad that DEAL are standing firm.
