elliotpage··on Tokyo’s Manuscript Writing Cafe won't let writers leave until they are finished
You see this kind of thing with Manga Authors too, except in those cases the authors editor comes to their residence and stares daggers at them until the manuscript is ready.

That being said the most often place I have seen this is within manga itself, so this maybe the incidence rate is actually low and the authors who draw this into their series are either traumatised or just passing along a story!

elliotpage··on Amazon’s Project Kuiper books 83 rockets to launch internet-beaming satellites
They should rename it to Amazon Project Kessler because thats what they are going to cause.
elliotpage··on What Is Unraid?
I've used UnRAID for just over two years and it works a treat. Well worth the cost of entry.
elliotpage··on Ask HN: Alternatives to 1Password
+1 to Bitwarden, and in particular the Vaultwarden implementation.

I've been self hosting it for a number of years now and have never had to think about it ever again - it works, has clients for all my platforms, never had any issues.

elliotpage··on Newly declassified documents reveal previously secret CIA bulk collection
I like how this is framed as "previously secret" when it has been glaringly obvious for years.
elliotpage··on Kosovo pulls plug on energy-guzzling Bitcoin miners
We are now the alien species in a forgettiable early season episode of Star Trek TNG.
elliotpage··on No sane compiler would optimize atomics (2015)
2105? I love posts from the future
elliotpage··on Proof-of-work should be banned
Good idea. We should also abolish private landlords and immediately provide housing to everyone who is unhoused.
elliotpage··on Please don't upgrade Docker without asking first
An addendum by another developer later on doubly misses the point: https://github.com/docker/roadmap/issues/183#issuecomment-75...
elliotpage··on When Bitcoin miners take over a town (2018)
Well, one of those is more fun to endlessly ramble about on Reddit so of course Bitcoin will get the attention!
elliotpage··on LibreOffice tells businesses: Get off Community version, you are hurting devs
Your employer should be providing the tools for you to do the job, including locally run software.

So yes, they should be providing an office suite whether that be Office365/ Libre Office / etc.

elliotpage··on LibrePhotos: A Self-Hosted Google Photos Alternative
I have just about finished setting this up on my own home lab- the documentation isn't as comprehensive as I would like but it has ingested my 52GB of photos and is serving them up nicely!
elliotpage··on Aurora 7 Prototype – 7 Screen Laptop
I wonder what the thermals are like on it. Also how long you could have it on your lap before you have to tap out.
elliotpage··on What is the benefit of having FIPS hardware-level encryption on a USB stick?
Agreed, my own day job enforces this (much to the chagrin of users who assume they can)
elliotpage··on What is the benefit of having FIPS hardware-level encryption on a USB stick?
There is a great detailed answer on the page but for me it boils down to "so I never have to think about it ever again".

I'm sure veracrypt on the cheap drive works very well, but I dont want to think about usb drives ever again so if I can make the problem go away (and its the customer/company paying for it) i'll buy the product with off the shelf capabilities.

elliotpage··on Sean Connery has died
He was only borrowing my Humvee :<
elliotpage··on Atlassian moving to cloud-only, will stop selling server licenses
I would guess that this move is because because their software runs like a bag of hammers falling down a flight of stairs and the last thing they want to deal with are your support calls about why their products dont work right. Don't get me wrong, they can work smoothly- just it takes an order of magnitude more work than you would expect / they would admit.

To be slightly more charitable, this is a sensible move as at least this way Atlassian can control the end user experience and (perhaps!) have it not be utter trash. Far easier for them to manage this way.

elliotpage··on Bitwarden password manager grants full RCE to Bitwarden developers
This title is really overblown, its someone complaining about the update mechanism, woop de doo.
elliotpage··on Ghost.org deleted my website
I agree with the post author that the tactic of allowing users to exceed plan limits and then upping their bill (yes, even with the 7 day notice email) is shady.

I hate this kind of behaviour from my tools - it feels like I am constantly being watched for when I "slip" and can be charged more without recourse. If you are going to use this behavior, provide a switch to enable hard limits on usage so a user cannot blunder unto having their budget blown by accident.

Edit: Also, why does the CEO have direct access to cancel user accounts and send them direct messages? Surely they have more important things to do?

elliotpage··on GPT-3 writing tool that generates surprisingly compelling characters/plot twists
This strongly falls under the realm of "so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should" for me.

At a time when writing is being undervalued and turned into "content" grist for the mill, the last thing I want to see is writing guided by an "AI" down the same old pathways.

elliotpage··on Moved a server from one building to another with zero downtime
I've been there, solidarity for cheap furniture based maintainence windows.
elliotpage··on We bought Walmart’s $140 laptop so you wouldn’t have to
This is a great site, thank you very much!
elliotpage··on Millions of Americans skipping payments as wave of defaults and evictions looms
That is because the buying process is an artificially inflated burden that reinforces the current system. Removing landlords would also remove the need for them to exist.
elliotpage··on Millions of Americans skipping payments as wave of defaults and evictions looms
Landlords take housing out of supply and extract rents from it. They produce nothing- the house was "provided" already, they just inserted themselves into the process.
elliotpage··on Microsoft Surface Go 2 review
I've been a big fan of my Surface Go since getting it - the graphics are surprisingly robust on such a small tablet!
elliotpage··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
Many people would cite "no macOS" as a positive. However, you are bang on about the worse speakers and microphone.
elliotpage··on Linux 5.6
Thank you for your hard work!
elliotpage··on FreeNAS and TrueNAS Are Unifying
Exactly, the less time you can spend setting up your giant anime nas means you have more time actually watching anime!
elliotpage··on Ask HN: What are some interesting projects to reuse your old devices?
This is a fun idea, and I am a terrible person as all I would think about doing is ways to subvert it and torment the family.
elliotpage··on When good ideas make bad business
It's a shame this project was shuttered as what screenshots are posted look amazing.

Better data aggregation is desperately needed in medicine and sadly I think the creator has walked face first into the horror of cost merely to access clinical trials. Plus, the cost of paying contractors to extract the actually useful information from those trials.

These are key reasons why Open Science and Open Data are so critical, to produce tools like this one. Sadly I don't think there is a "Startup" level of money available for it even so.
