I do believe that the US law is Draconian, but you can't say "oh Swartz! yeah just a guy, let's bully him to oblivion with hundreds of years of jail time and million on fines" while at the same time say "Oh John Deere, that's a corporation, please follow the licensing of the software you use". It doesn't seem right to me.
I work at a non-profit and wouldn't dare to utter these words to any employee. I understand believing what you preach, but actually saying you work on "changing the world" in an internal email seems very problematic? Is it just me?
The US copyright law is draconian, copyright violations are felony violations with 10 years prison and 100k$ fines, the Aaron Swartz taught us that.
If you have any questions about such a thing don't hesitate to reach out.
I'm biased thought because I prefer to communicate projects that have reached some maturity, but I have to admit that not seeking investor funding may allow such a thing.
One may argue that seeking investor funding may play a role to exaggerate your operations, but on the other hand this investors could and should seek better understanding of the technological and operational challeges involved.
