elisharobinson··on Tesla’s $16k Quote for a $700 Fix Is Why Right to Repair Matters
its not like a brake light or a suspension part this was a inlet port for cooling fluid to the battery . If not done correctly it will spring a leak in a onroad driving situation , Tesla probably does have safety systems to stop the car to prevent the battery from overheating and exploding. besides they charged 700$ for 5$ worth of parts and 1~2 hours of labour :) that isnt the best advocacy for RTR IMO.
elisharobinson··on CR Engineers Show a Tesla Will Drive with No One in the Driver's Seat
Are you using logic you know HN doesn't encourage that
elisharobinson··on Consumer Reports tricks Tesla to drive with no one at wheel
Autopilot in aircraft does not land the plane or take off and the pilot is trained to take over if anything goes wrong this maps well with expectations you should have about tesla AP. And IMO a torque sensor is much less intrusive / complex safety check than driver monitoring . And people do fall a sleep on the wheel people drink and drive the fact of the matter is if you're paying the insurance it's on you to keep the car from crashing . FSD will be prod ready only after Tesla has data to release an insurance per car covering the passenger aswell.
elisharobinson··on Tesla owners asking what happens if 'full self driving' isn't real
No im not trolling actually ... its about as feasible as running a taxi service with Ferrari's all while having comparable revenue to a uber driver .. it just wont work , it can not scale capex is to high.
elisharobinson··on Tesla owners asking what happens if 'full self driving' isn't real
I still dont understand how why waymo is still in the FSD discussion. Its a science project on wheels, Which will never make it to market.
elisharobinson··on As Tesla Invests $1.5B in Bitcoin, Former Goldman Exec Ditches Tesla Stock
I dont think tesla stock is fairly valued . the same way i believe it was undervalued from 2016 - 2019 what happened in my understanding was that long shorts were tired of paying interest for a stock which just wont move down bellow a support so they decided to close the positions and as they did it hit the stop loss of other shorts cascading .into a short squeeze ... but now after the s&p 500 you cant short it cause there isnt much float available with every single fund forced to buy it ........ that is the story of the stock , but i do take offence to the word "ponzi scheme" the cars are real , the solar roof is real , the exponential growth is real ... you are free to draw the line where you want but "ponzi scheme" is a very legal thing and you better have proof.
elisharobinson··on Waymo CEO dismisses Tesla self-driving plan: “This is not how it works”
Yes i think i over inflated the number of cars required . https://www.businessofapps.com/data/uber-statistics/#4 going through the data there are about 5 million drivers in Uber in 2019 . i will admit 100B$ in capex is a reasonable assumption But I cant imagine for practical reasons google , apple , Amazon putting a large % of their savings into still unproven tech with regulatory risk. Keep in mind that they would still have to compete with Tesla at somepoint which has a best car platform vs < X car company> in the market. Not to mention they already have close to 1 million cars with all the hardware(their claim, i still feel tesla TPU v2 with TSMC 7nm is a must have) and they are on track to producing 500k cars in US with these capabilities. while no other car company is even trying to integrate < X lidar autonomy startup> in mass production Today . Not to mention that currently the primary hindrance for Tesla is software which can scale much better in comparison to a ground up redesign of a car plant to accommodate lidar based systems .
elisharobinson··on Waymo CEO dismisses Tesla self-driving plan: “This is not how it works”
Really though how realistic is your business model ... if you wanted a autonomous network to replace Uber Currently 30 million cars on road . you would atleast need 10 million cars assuming each car costs 100k ( optimistically with lidar tech factoring in capex for factories and you dont have major product revisions ) thats 1 trillion in capex ... now you if you had the revenue of apple in 2020 ~ 0.25T$ you could expect to be cashflow positive in 7~8 years (assuming exponential ramp up of production and 0 competition) ... all of these thing need to happen for this taxi service X to succeed ,i think to get all these things right is highly unlikely and i feel Elon knows this aswell so he took the path of simpler tech and trying a software service model which is infinitely more scale-able .
elisharobinson··on Waymo CEO dismisses Tesla self-driving plan: “This is not how it works”
WOW 1 paragraph of data > 48 page pdf of "look at me i did this first so i know what im doing" . Honestly this is quite dumb , waymo will NEVER i REPEAT NEVER make it to market let alone with any amount of volume ... And it has nothing to autonomy or tech ... just by virtue of having bulky expensive sensor's (which need to be serviced regularly) and power draw of the compute and tech .... other than having a very niche proof of concept like project loon i think waymo will also fold like all of its fellow google x brother-in.
elisharobinson··on How many GNU/Linux users are needed to change a light bulb?
HN has its issues but its got its moments aswell.
elisharobinson··on Former Tesla engineer sues for defamation
first of there is some dirt here , Tesla dropped the ball on this one. They made it personal and could have handled it more gently. But then again i have a bias towards TESLA and im more inclined to trust press release by lawyers which is legally admissible. There is no doubt she was traumatised by the sudden nature of it all. although i hope after all this PR spotlight she will have her name cleared and one of the many HN comments who are disgusted by the way Tesla handled this will recommend her for employment in their organisation.
elisharobinson··on Time series analysis of mail-in ballots stats reveals widespread fraud
as DJT demonstrated so gracefully with the whole russia there is a gulf of difference between proof and conviction ... Also can we all just level with the fact that both dems and repubs are sore losers .
elisharobinson··on Time series analysis of mail-in ballots stats reveals widespread fraud
this is some anon in 4chan , scraped from a NYT website allegedly . since we have only a single source of truth and nothing to have as a reference why should anon be trusted ..... besides DJT would have this investigated with his DOJ if something is off by this much, this would also mean the FBI / NSA / CIA was sleep at the wheel ... unless you are able to trace all of the ballots this is just pure fiction
elisharobinson··on Consumer Reports: Cadillac's Super Cruise Outperforms Tesla's Autopilot
There exists a total of 0 pilots in the world who believe autopilot system will fly the plane without any need for intervention. If your ingnorance gives meaning to words it does not make them true.
elisharobinson··on Consumer Reports: Cadillac's Super Cruise Outperforms Tesla's Autopilot
There is nothing to pretend . The facts are there for everyone to see , no other system is able to perform lane change and operate outside of the US.
elisharobinson··on Consumer Reports: Cadillac's Super Cruise Outperforms Tesla's Autopilot
IMHO driver monitoring should be separate from any test which is meant to evaluate L2 self driving features. And any trained pilot knows autopilot does not do everything and that you should be prepared to take over if needed , if you perceive autopilot to be "AI-magic" you should not blame others for your own ingnorance.
elisharobinson··on Ask HN: What is a piece of advice that you would give to a new Linux user?
learn about the posix standard , if you understand the past it becomes much more clear why things are the way they are.
elisharobinson··on TikTok’s Chinese owner offers to forego stake to clinch U.S. deal – sources
these dont have any standard precedent for application in terms of tech and tech related fields , where geographic boundaries do not apply. china has had a free ride now i guess it has to pay , also the same could be said about china banning free speech and tech companies from other countries , i guess you will have no problem with that.
elisharobinson··on TikTok – How the White House Helped U.S. Investors to Raid a Chinese Company
why even bother playing the victim card, clearly this is propaganda page. the loss to byte dance is just the tip of the ice berg . US is comming at china for the theft of trillions worth of intellectual property in the form of lost revenue. Also its a quid pro quo alow us social media companies in china and US will allow Chinese social media companies.
elisharobinson··on Google reportedly peeks into Android data to gain edge over third-party apps
why AB test when your competition can do it for you ... SMH come on google
elisharobinson··on German court bans Tesla ad statements related to autonomous driving
Dude you are ignoring a whole host of other factors here . Since you ignored them let me clarify . Waymo does not do freeways . It uses HD maps , bulky lidar systems which have many moving parts , speed limits, etc . Waymo will never be a real thing solely based on the fact of power draw for all those electronics . If that system is mounted on a EV it will drain batteries quickly and add weight if it's added on ICE car it will suck the range, same is true for all other car manufacturers attempting full autonomy. Tesla is the only company who even has a remote possibility of getting the feature on the road if they market that realty , as something of a pre-order kind of thing I'm not sure I have a problem with that. Personally I feel they would have to have a another revision of Thier FSD chip and refresh Thier current ML model to realize it .
elisharobinson··on Ask HN: Sacrifice Seniority for Better Long Term Career Prospects?
visibility * skill * demand = value , if your function as SE is to increase value. There isnt good answer , pick the role which has best as aggregate of all three. if its a leadership role in a small popular company thats worth more than a senior leadership role in an other company , offcourse all of these variables are subjective and to truly know you would have to talk to lot off people.
elisharobinson··on New German law would force ISPs to allow secret service to install trojans
so that roughly translates to the state should have access to my personal property( computer / data ) and should have the right to do so by any means necessary. that sounds much better do remember article 11 and 13 were drafts aswell.

How did ads make it to the front page
elisharobinson··on 'We've bought the wrong satellites': UK tech gamble baffles experts
unless your expectation is that the EU is equally dumb than thats not a valid bargain tactic. they should probably poke the bear with russia and see if US will come to help. In any case UK will have to go to the US hat in hand with free trade agreements and UK thought EU was bad wait till they start playing with the US.
elisharobinson··on Preprints could promote confusion and distortion
i dont think peer review is as valid as people make it out to be. regulation should be introduced to have more rigorous reproduce-ability and government funding for research should have quotas meant specially for reproducing findings independently. peer review alone is no longer a valid method of getting consensus about science. the retractions from new england journal of medicine should give a good indication of how rotten academia has gotten.
elisharobinson··on Andrew Yang's Data Dividend Project is pushing Big Tech to pay users for data
a legislation with a flat tax would not be that bad. i guesstimate that close to 70% maybe more of new ads are done online. and google and facebook are disruptive to old players who pay a lot more in taxes. this tax would definitely affect new players to the digital add buisness , but i dont see anyone even trying.
elisharobinson··on An introduction to RabbitMQ
Your fault is using pika. I thought the same untill I tried some other python libraries . Try Oslo messaging . It's used in openstack (enough said).
elisharobinson··on Elon Musk reopening Tesla factory despite Alameda County order
Get your facts straight it's only 1/3 of ten thousand and they will be separated into 3 shifts . Also they claim to have safe hygiene standards . I don't have any reason to doubt their clAIm . What do you get from going to court . You can't get the billions wasted in time cost And penalty of having artificial limits on you while your competition is allowed to operate and you lose market share.
elisharobinson··on Elon Musk reopening Tesla factory despite Alameda County order
i guess your ignoring the fact that if your county didnt have the authority to impose a speed limit but did so anyway than its not illegal to ignore it.
