elisharobinson··on Beating the Averages (2001)
what PG said about time to market is most part of the article IMO. what is the time to market, how long does it take to cold start a project from zero to mvp. sadly our ideals as SE might not be able to match that reality always. As much as we like to pretend that we know what is the best stack , at the end of the day it is the market / customer / client who votes with their money bloat , lean , fast , slow , typed , etc none of it matters if nobody buys your solution. in 2013 is when there was a huge shift in enterprise to be more open OSS until then enterprise would only use solutions from the catalog of either oracle or microsoft .
elisharobinson··on Beating the Averages (2001)
i dont think this would apply as much in the modern context of package driven development . Nobody is delivering value as a SE without some package manager today . we are so far beyond the discussion if its a good idea to write your own tools for doing http request . And large scale adoption of the modern open source ecosystem was only possible after 2013 . Also to keep in mind that we are in a post moore's law era where people are relearning how to make things more performant.
elisharobinson··on US moves closer to recalling Tesla’s self-driving software
i cant counter plain crazy . you win i guess . I am not claiming the dude can do no wrong . I am stating the fact that claiming he didn't do any thing new or special is just plain crazy . just try doing any one of the things he has already done .
elisharobinson··on US moves closer to recalling Tesla’s self-driving software
"he lied his way to the top of the world's richest list" ... why do midwits always chose AP thread to gather .... i guess you dont need to start a rocket company an electric car company or try to create a fintech company in 1999 ... why work 100 hr weeks when you can just "lie" .... if biden goes ahead with this he will only shoot the foot of his supporter's like GM ( half of its current value is tied to cruise ) and blow up VC mna pipline for all the lidar based startup's
elisharobinson··on Twitter plans to comply with Musk’s demands for data
i dont think so , why do you need a bot in the first place ... its probably to run a trend of some sort, correlate that with when the users were created should give a good base .. current MAU's stand around 0.46 B users , 50 M tweets on the user base would avg 10 tweets a month that sounds right ... if new account which stays under this limit would result in a False negative
elisharobinson··on The collapse of complex software
it is a knapsack problem for sure , minimize ( tooling cost and complexity ) and maximize ( feature complexity aka "richness" or "usefulness" )
elisharobinson··on Symphonic Metal Bands: Nerdiness vs. Kickassery – A Statistical Analysis
little salty as to the lack of japanese bands on this list ... personally i want to nominate galneryus
elisharobinson··on Microsoft's Use of Pluton Suggests It Sees PC Owners as the Enemy
They are making a case for treating your pc like a embedded device or consumer electronics device. Where changing the OS is considered to be a crime cause you "hacked" the firmware and installed a new one.
elisharobinson··on Microsoft's Use of Pluton Suggests It Sees PC Owners as the Enemy
But today I guess it's best practice to just use cloud SAAS for your enterprise . The pc is basically a thin client and does not store anything. You can't exfiltrate without the company knowing about it . This is more barriers for people to switch to Linux . Till date I don't know how secure boot stopped people from doing anything. What threat vector does tpm address and what is the % of that vector in overall threat landscape.
elisharobinson··on Musk announces funding secured for Twitter buy
once again HN demonstrates how much it does not know anything . he does not need to own 100% , 51% is well and good. musk + jack + ark invest + JPM already have 25% they need to get the other 26% which should be very achievable with tesla stock . All SEC fillings aside this is pretty much a done deal .

elisharobinson··on What is money, anyway?
I share a similar belief . I think we can have physics like discussion for money . where joule ~ money and joule / sec ~ value , i am making a distinction between money and value where money is more discrete(quantized) and value is continuous . The second secret ingredient is compute. OP(like FLOP) ~ money and OPS ~ value . putting it together we get , M = OP * E * K where OP -> total no of operations E -> energy spent K -> some constant . Dimensionally money has same SI unit as Joule , Total operation is a dimensionless variable . V = M / T {having same SI unit as Watt} value is money per unit time and Goverments / services / business should be seen as value generators the same way we describe the power of an engine as horsepower or watts . This model is completely different than market analysis of prices / value . Not to mention that majority of value traded is done outside of open markets .

This model makes the assumption that all players in the value chain (producers and consumers) are agents with repeatable instructions ie put,Get,push, add, mov, etc.

Since there is No SI unit for instructions I propose the Unit for measuring instructions be MOV operator , This is because of my belief taking inspiration from the X86 MOV operator which was proven to be turing complete with the movfuscator(https://github.com/xoreaxeaxeax/movfuscator). What this means IMO all computable operations can be broken down to move operations.

Lastly this system views markets as interaction between agents . And makes the assumption that agents that do not sustainably price their goods / services will fail to operate in the longrun. And views variance / volatility in prices as a outcome of chaotic interaction between agents rather True indicator of value.

elisharobinson··on What is money, anyway?
i see that cash and cash flow as 2 different things , so made the case of cash or $ ~ joule and value or cashflow ~ joule / sec.

elisharobinson··on Berkshire Hathaway 2021 annual report [pdf]
full picture . they own biggest 'infra' position holding on cash to weather the shit storm . will buy back stock if we fall behind index funds to deliver value .
elisharobinson··on Berkshire Hathaway 2021 annual report [pdf]
they have a huge cash position and when where they chose to invest it will create a halo effect causing it to get bigger .... also they can and will do stock buy backs if they cant a better investment.

elisharobinson··on The mother of all crashes is coming and it won’t be fun
crash usually come by way of forced selling. "assets" are no longer dependent on human factors like gdp. cloud and datacenter compute used is a better aggregate indicator then gdp. "assets" are growing exponentially and show no signs of slowing down.
elisharobinson··on Ask HN: Why can't VCs short startups?
you can and this is done by betting on the competition, but since theranos was not a publicy traded company you couldnt short it. All though you could short the VC investing in them or could short Bond if they floated the bonds on the bond market.
elisharobinson··on MIT study finds Tesla drivers become inattentive when Autopilot is activated
the sample size of the study which the paper was originally based on only had 25 teslas (model s and x from 2016-19 era). Before jumping into the analysis or the methods or techniques used to parse the data. I think it is important to acknowledge that the sample size is hilariously small and represents a very small % of teslas current AP harware software stack.
elisharobinson··on MIT study finds Tesla drivers become inattentive when Autopilot is activated
So you have no issue with the sample size being so small and exclusively comming from older models of Tesla's s and X lineup . Making a claim about Tesla as a whole today.
elisharobinson··on MIT study finds Tesla drivers become inattentive when Autopilot is activated
i went through the article .. read the paper it was based on ... saw the data they sited .... saw the conclusion they reached ... was severely worried of the state of academia and what qualifies as "research"

>> the only significant conclusion this paper had was a driver was more than 22% likely to look at the "down and center stack" when on AP

>> the paper was based on data found on this https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/8751968 paper author by none other than my favourite podcaster D Lex Friedman . the study is conducted on 25 cars all either model S/X from 2016-2019 AKA pre fsd hardware and driver monitoring.

>> now tesla has a big screen on the center console and i would find it natural to see the navigation when im not driving. BUT all other aspects of driving were not that far from normal ... turns out people do all sorts of dumb stuff with or without AP

>> this took me less than 15 mins of googling and i was baffled by how something so stupid could go past even the most bare bone peer review . and then i found about "The Advanced Vehicle Technology Consortium (AVT)"https://agelab.mit.edu/avt the sponsor of some of the co-authors . Which curiously has major car companies and suppliers listed as partners except for tesla . i dont have the inside info on how money changes hands in academia ... but the whole thing looks pretty bad

personally i am biased towards Tesla (aka tesla fanboy) . But i feel there is enough wrong here to justify my case that this was a academia sponsored hit piece not to different from climate change deniers or tobacco companies.

elisharobinson··on MIT study finds Tesla drivers become inattentive when Autopilot is activated
the goal is no wheel , just set a destination and put your seatbelt . From that perspective it would make sense to put least amount of effort on driver monitoring.

elisharobinson··on Tesla’s $16k Quote for a $700 Fix Is Why Right to Repair Matters
from Teslas perspective this makes sense. the available options are as follows.

1. invest money in a supply chain to have parts in stock for the battery assembly(take many months).

2. do a repair in Tesla warranty and pick up the Tab again if it breaks or worse the battery is damaged.

3. force a repair on the owner/lessee to pay for a new battery assembly which is less likely to have issues/safer

elisharobinson··on Tesla’s $16k Quote for a $700 Fix Is Why Right to Repair Matters
i understand that things need to cost something . But if you owned a toyota or a ford car and they charged you 700$ for service. Does that sound reasonable.
