elijaht··on Being kicked out of the tech industry
This is a disingenuous comment.

Half of the issues pointed out are more than stylistic (activity instead of impact, generic/no prioritization). Even without stylistic issues it's not a compelling resume.

And basic spelling mistakes are more than a stylistic issue, it shows a real carelessness that it's hard to imagine wouldn't be in their work

elijaht··on NASA had to train Apollo 11's astronauts to not use profanity (2019)
> And even car racers avoid swearing in public.

That’s absolutely not true. Watch any F1 race and within the first few minutes you will hear a censored drivers radio. IIRC F1 tried to penalize drivers who swore too much on the radio and faced massive backlash from the drivers

I pay for a ton of sports content across a ton of platforms. I used to pirate a ton of sports across a ton of platforms.

I don’t seem to have nearly the same difficulty as you. I wanted to watch the Olympics so I reactivated my Peacock account, paid for a month, then immediately canceled it. I’ve never had consistent issues finding where I could watch a particular game. It is aggravating that my MLBTV subscription doesn’t work when my team plays on an Apple TV broadcast but that’s 1-2 times a year.

Maybe I was not good at piracy but it took just about the same effort to find the right links, deal with constant buffering, etc. But I find it pretty phenomenal that I can easily watch just about any sporting event now with little difficulty

elijaht··on How to carry more than your own bodyweight (2025)
Agree it’s efficient, don’t agree that an untrained person could unbrace double bodyweight.

I weigh 90kg and can squat ~190kg. Having that much on my back feels HEAVY. I think if you haven’t built up to it before you will not be able to do that

Pilots and surgeons surely have easily accessible bathrooms as a part of their workplace, no? They’re also compensated significantly more and (IMHO) given a lot more dignity

In my city public bathrooms are extremely rare and it’s not trivial to find one. I’m sure taxi drivers are a bit more in tune with where they are out of necessity but even then it’s no guarantee they can find convenient parking/be in the right place/etc.

DC, Chicago both have good coverage (I lived in both without a car, although did need busses at times).

Boston and SF in my limited experience have somewhat usable networks but definitely a step below

elijaht··on Say Goodbye
I was shocked at how much even perfunctory messages from coworkers meant when I got laid off. And the folks that offered tangible help have stayed in my mind since. It was the most challenging time in my life and even a simple message saying they would miss me or something like that helped so much.

Before I got laid off I was always hesitant to reach out to other folks who were laid off, now I try to make a point of it, even if it’s to apologize

elijaht··on U.S. senators introduce new pirate site blocking bill, "Block BEARD"
I watch a decent amount of movies, I can count on one hand the number of times I couldn’t rent it for <$5 on Prime or YouTube. I’ve never been unable to identify where I could find a particular movie to stream, and it’s certainly less effort than going to a physical storefront.

I think there are plenty of problems with the streaming model, but I think it’s borderline bad faith to try and make the claim that piracy is needed because it’s hard to navigate streaming sites. It’s certainly easier than finding obscure movies was pre-streaming

elijaht··on Why drinking coffee in Iran has become so complicated
I have never once gone to a coffee shop where ordering a “medium black drip coffee” has required any follow up or additional choices (beyond occasionally needing to describe the size in ounces), and I go to all variety of coffee shops with my partner
elijaht··on Why drinking coffee in Iran has become so complicated

elijaht··on Why hasn't commercial air travel gotten any faster since the 1960s? (2009)
I’ve had a vastly different experience. Several trips in the last year with 30 minutes+ to drop a bag and a couple closer to an hour. That’s enough to move the needle on when I feel like I can show up to the airport.

Baggage claim is usually pretty quick but even 5-10 minutes sucks after flying.

I’ve also had 2 bags fail to make it with my plane meaning I had to wait 24 hours for a courier to deliver them. It also makes connecting or flight changes much more dicey.

I definitely think I’ve been unlucky recently but the fact that I could be unlucky is why I avoid it as much as possible

elijaht··on Why hasn't commercial air travel gotten any faster since the 1960s? (2009)
I’ve never been asked for ID on a greyhound (~10 trips) or amtrak (~25 trips).

I’m sure they both have policies about it on the books, but I’ve never seen them enforced

elijaht··on A layoff fundamentally changed how I perceive work
I’ve been through several waves of layoffs. Every employee kept on temporarily to transition things over (IMO quite rationally) did the absolute minimum required and I don’t think it was worth the companies money to keep them on. Additionally since their immediate manager was not part of the layoff decision making process, no one cared they were doing nothing.
elijaht··on North Carolina's coastal tourism could decline due to salty tap water
I'm shocked that this would be a big issue (among all of the beach related climate issues). I've been going to NC beaches for ~2 decades and always bought bottled water and thought nothing of it or that it was just the cost of visiting. AFAIK salty tap water has been an issue the entire time I've been traveling there
elijaht··on America Is Suddenly Getting Healthier. No One Knows Why.
Reminds me of this (slightly melodramatic) article: https://www.oldtimestrongman.com/articles/the-iron-by-henry-...

Lifting has definitely played a changing role in my life. As a kid it definitely did instill the idea of working for results. It was extremely rewarding to see that when I worked out consistently and with a plan, I was stronger than my friends who went inconsistently or with poorly planned workouts. As an adult now it's more therapeutic - so much of my day is ambiguous, out of my control, or searching for how to apply my leverage instead of actually just applying my leverage. So it's very nice to have an hour of my day where I decide what I am working towards, and be able to hit clear goals largely by putting in blind effort.

elijaht··on The Surreal Magnificence of Fatherhood

elijaht··on Tokyo is set to introduce a four-day workweek for government employees
Wouldn't 10's be better for a longer commute? Need to do it 4 vs 5 days?
elijaht··on Building LawStar – a year long indie hacking journey
I don't agree with this - law students still skew more frugal than white collar adults. Definitely less frugal than undergrads - folks coming from the workforce generally have some savings, and I do think there were more students coming from an affluent background than in undergrad. But the spending pattern of the average student was still quite frugal - housing was almost always student housing, many students did not use a car, most were taking significant loans etc.

My wife attended a school ranked ~30th in the US, and was in a leadership position at her school's flagship journal, which was in a dingy room with the only amenity being a microwave.

Maybe it looks different at a T14 school, but the vast majority of journal students I know would have balked at a >$10/month subscription like this
