elidourado··on Leaked Documents Show the U.N.'s Internet Power Grab...
WCITLeaks.org cofounder here. You're right that the language sounds more benign than they way it is described, but remember that this is diplo-speak and it is occurring in a pre-existing context. The Chinese proposal is actually pretty sweeping when properly interpreted, and is cause for some concern.
elidourado··on Leaked Documents Show the U.N.'s Internet Power Grab...
ICANN and DNS will be dealt with at conferences in 2013 and 2014. WCIT is mostly about charging for international Internet traffic termination, making the ITU-T's recommendations( which compete with the IETF's and others') mandatory, and getting the ITU's foot in the Internet-regulation door.

You must be new here.
elidourado··on Ask HN: Did anyone else get a Google Chrome Laptop yet?
I got one. I think that everyone that applied using the prompt on the dev channel build of Chrome got one. Can anyone refute this?

elidourado··on Betterment wants to be your new, higher-yield savings account (TC Disrupt)
No, ING doesn't offer checkable mutual funds, as far as I can tell.
elidourado··on Betterment wants to be your new, higher-yield savings account (TC Disrupt)
The fee is too high, the investment choices too few (I don't want to be exposed to Treasuries right now, thanks), and it's still separate from my checking account. Fix those things and I'm there.

In principle, I am a huge fan of mutual fund banking:

elidourado··on We will be able to live to 1,000
Let's say that life expectancy is now increasing at a rate of 2 years per decade. If you want to live to 1000, you just need to increase that to 10 years per decade. You don't have to go from 78 to 1000 all at once.
elidourado··on [dead]
We could do those things, but we could also just let people in if they want to come to the US to improve their lives.

I totally agree that the guy is insane.

elidourado··on Why Snakebites Are About to Get a Lot More Deadly
If that's really your concern, then why not at least let college graduates opt out? Or people holding PhDs? My suspicion is that many people would oppose this because it disadvantages the uneducated, but of course you can't have it both ways. Either regulation is good for the uneducated or it is not.
elidourado··on Why Snakebites Are About to Get a Lot More Deadly
My view is that people should be allowed to opt out of FDA regulation if they wish to do so. It's my body; I should be allowed to put anything I want into it.

It took 10 years for the first beta blockers to be approved in the US after they were in use in Europe. In that amount of time, thousands of Americans died for lack of the drugs. It's hard to distinguish this from mass murder, or at least mass manslaughter.

elidourado··on New attacks today against Wordpress (lots of sites hacked)
Understood, but I don't think people need infinite customizability. They need roughly Wordpress-level customizability, security, and relatively cheap hosting. Can no one really supply this?
elidourado··on New attacks today against Wordpress (lots of sites hacked)
llimllib, thanks for the reply. I can think of a number of reasons that you might want to have dynamic elements in your theme. I understand the concern over themes running code, but if you want things like breadcrumbs and your CMS doesn't come with them as a native function then you need to be able to run native code. Ideally, the CMS would include a wide and extensible array of native functions that themes could take advantage of, but tumblr certainly isn't that CMS.

Good to know about the pages.

One other issue is file uploads. Say I want to host my CV at domain.com/CV.pdf. I don't think I could do that with Tumblr. Is that too much to ask?

elidourado··on New attacks today against Wordpress (lots of sites hacked)
As I understand it, with Tumblr you can't customize your URL structure, you need to use external commenting systems, and your themes can't run non-js code. Also, many people use Wordpress as a hybrid CMS/blog; the ability to have pages (again with a defined url structure) is important.
elidourado··on New attacks today against Wordpress (lots of sites hacked)
Entrepreneurs take note. This is a problem that is not being solved. There are lots of smallish bloggers out there who want more customization than Blogger/Wordpress.com/Tumblr/Posterous allow, whose best option is Wordpress and shared hosting. This is a sucky best option. Do something about this; make some money solving this problem.
elidourado··on Do Free Services Have an Obligation to Users? Should We Regulate Them?
I'm sorry you feel insulted; that was not my intention. I meant to categorize you according to Postrel's framework. Nevertheless, I think your point is wrong and you should read the book for a clear explanation of exactly why.
elidourado··on Do Free Services Have an Obligation to Users? Should We Regulate Them?
This article reminds me of Virginia Postrel's book The Future and its Enemies. This guy is one of its enemies.

elidourado··on Ask HN: Does an index fund count as diversifying?
Broad index funds are great, but the big problem with them is that all your eggs are still in the "USA basket". Consider adding some foreign or emerging market funds, but also realize that it is impossible to diversify perfectly.

Is corporate campaign spending a big deal? One way to tell is to look at state laws. Some states do not restrict corporate expenditures on political speech, and others do. Can anybody tell the difference? If not, then who cares?
elidourado··on Google Chrome 4 now natively supports Greasemonkey user scripts
I have no problems making it optional, as long as many similar options don't add bloat over time. But to fix your problem you might want to run either the beta channel or dev channel builds.

Dev channel: http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html?extra=devchannel Beta channel: http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html?extra=betachannel

elidourado··on Google Chrome 4 now natively supports Greasemonkey user scripts
That's puzzling. Don't know if it will help, but for reference I'm running the dev channel build on OS X.
elidourado··on Google Chrome 4 now natively supports Greasemonkey user scripts
Works for me. In preferences, manage search engines. All or most of the search engines you've used in the past should be there. Edit the keyword to the keyword of your choice (for Wikipedia I use "wp"). In the omni bar, type "wp", space, query, enter. Alternatively you can use a tab instead of a space and this makes it more obvious that you are searching.
