elfbargpt··on TimeGuessr: Guess what year a photograph was taken
Not much better on desktop haha, still cool though. Basically a combination of

elfbargpt··on Ask HN: ChatGPT’s Impact on Headcount – What’s Your Experience?
I am excited about AI / machine learning, and I do think ChatGPT is a really cool engineering feat, but in it's current state I don't see it displacing too many jobs.

Basically right now it's a fairly accurate assistant that you can communicate with via text only. I just don't know how many jobs can be replaced with that.

elfbargpt··on Successful room temperature ambient-pressure magnetic levitation of LK-99
EDIT: This is probably fake. The account was just created and can't find any info online. Also the pellet returns to its starting position for some reason.

Just saw another unconfirmed replication here: https://twitter.com/instsondaw/status/1687433935012139008?s=...

Found their process really fascinating, apparently they create L-99 powder, sort it by meissner effect, then press the "high meissner effect" powder together

elfbargpt··on Speck of LK-99 floating without contact on magnet
It's definitely sketchy. Rumors are it's coming out of HUST though.

Here's another twitter thread with a little more context: https://twitter.com/altryne/status/1686492563145166848?s=20

Source isn't completely clear but rumors are that it's out of China. Obviously should be taken with a grain of salt, if it's real others should be coming

elfbargpt··on A room-temperature superconductor? New developments
Throughout this whole saga I've had this feeling that at the very least we can rely on China to really pursue this new development to it's logical end. It's kind of sad, but I don't think I can say the same about the US at this moment. You know for a fact China's going to JUMP on this, figure out if it works or not, and iterate.
elfbargpt··on Origin of correlated isolated flat bands in LK99
Does anyone know if there's a way to ensure those "particular Cu substitutions" happen at the correct atomic sites? Or I guess what's the way forward in terms of synthesizing
elfbargpt··on Origin of correlated isolated flat bands in LK99
Can anyone explain what this means in relation to the ability to synthesize it in superconducting form?

Is there a way to force the Cu to the correct site? Or is looking for a new material with similar properties the way forward

elfbargpt··on Larne Craigyhill bonfire: 17000 pallets (2021)
I ended up going to Belfast the weekend of the bonfires without knowing it existed beforehand--was a totally surreal experience. The largest man-made fires I'd ever seen right in the middle of the city streets, armored cars driving around, not many safety protocols. Kids were drinking buckfast and climbing to the top of skinny stacks that had to be over 100 feet tall.

I would definitely recommend checking it out to anyone that can.

Some pictures I just googled: https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo/eleventh-night.html?sortBy...

elfbargpt··on “I'm pretty convinced it's over” (regarding the superconductor)
I've been following this guy on twitter and it seems like he's kind of jumped the gun twice at this point. Was really quick to celebrate the new superconductor, and now he's convinced it's over. I think we just need to wait for replication attempts
elfbargpt··on Superconductor news: What’s claimed, and how strong the evidence seems to be
I really think this could be in-fighting for the third Nobel prize spot (if it turns out to be legitimate). I pointed this out in another comment, but the first two authors are the the LK-99 material namesake and will likely always be the first two authors.

"YW Kwon" published the first paper with himself as the 3rd author, and "HT Kim" published the second paper a few hours later with himself as the 3rd author.

Pretty interesting drama if that's the case. May indicate neither paper was ready, but that they all think the result is legitimate.

elfbargpt··on Superconductor news: What’s claimed, and how strong the evidence seems to be
One interesting thing I saw pointed out on twitter: both of the published papers have "Lee" and "JH Kim" as the first two authors (LK-99 material namesake).

The first paper was published by YW Kwon with himself as the third author. The second paper was published a few hours later by Hyun-Tak Kim with himself as the third author. As others have pointed out there can only be 3 names on the ticket for a nobel prize.

To me this might indicate that they all think the result is potentially nobel-worthy, and also that the papers may not be as complete / rigorous as they should have been due to this drama / race to publish (YW Kwon published without permission to get his name out there, forcing Hyun-Tak to push his out a few hours later)

elfbargpt··on Why Chinese students are taking graduation photos looking ‘more dead than alive’
Good to see Chinese students expressing themselves freely on social media at least--China might not be quite as dystopian as we're often led to believe
